Hańba! - 1939 (2019) EN

In Poland every fab of good music probably knows what Hańba! is about. So we are in the year 1939 and so the new EP by the Kraków-based yard orchestra is called accordingly. But this time there are some fresh things so the band still go forward.

So firstly, there's the album's theme - the sea. And although the rebellious anthems didn't suddenly change into sea shanties (the closer being Płyną okręty ("The Ships Are Sailing") with the phenomenally (unfortunately) all-time-valid lyrics by the poet Władysław Szlengel), the theme is tangible from time to time. Also in the beautiful cover art. Secondly, the band invite the folk trio Sutari who appear in two songs. It is probably Hańba!'s first collaborative work and it seems that although the projects are 80 years apart, there's a clear connection between them.

On the other hand, everything Hańba! got famous for is still audible. Obviously, adapting poetry into punk songs. Obviously, melody and energy of the angry music that was created before its history . Obviously the anti-war, anti-fascist and anti-establishment themes served often in surprising ways (Łowy ("Hunt")). And for the English-speakers, you can go through the band's Bandcamp page as there are translations of the poems/lyrics. Worth it.

W Polsce już chyba każdy fan dobrej muzyki wie czym jest Hańba i z czym się ją je. A więc mamy rok 1939 i naturalnie tak nazywa się też nowa EP-ka krakowskiej orkiestry podwórkowej. Tym razem jednak mamy kilka zwrotów akcji, a więc zespół ciągle się rozwija.

Po pierwsze mamy nową tematykę - morze. I nawet jeśli zbuntowane hymny nie zmieniły się nagle w szanty (najbliżej temu Płyną okręty z fenomenalnie ponadczasowym (niestety) tekstem Władysława Szlengela) to motyw ten przejawia się raz po raz. Także w świetnym cover arcie Po drugie, muzycy zaprosili do pomocy artystki z folkowego trio Sutari udzielejące się w dwóch kawałkach. To pierwsza chyba kolaboracja zespołu i wygląda na to, że mimo różnicy 80 lat między oboma projektami jest chemia.

Z drugiej strony mamy wszystko to, z czego Hańba zasłynęła. Wiadomo, adaptacja poezji na punkowe songi. Wiadomo, melodyjność i energia wściekłej muzyki, która powstała wcześniej niż historia zakłada. Wiadomo, antywojenna, antyfaszystowska i antyestablishmentowa tematyka podana często z zaskakującą przewrotnością (Łowy). Dla nieanglojęzycznych - warto poklikać sobie bandcampowe konto, na którym kryją się tłumaczenia piosenek (a raczej poezji, na której są one zbudowane), warto.
