June Games

Oof! June was a BUSY month!!!

Sunday, 2 June 2024

The first Sunday in June Nic and Orion were back for some Warhammer Underworlds! We'd missed a few weeks, so it felt like it had been quite a while!

Nic brought out Cyreni's Razors, Amanda decided to try Khagara's Ravagers, Orion tried out Grinkrak's Looncourt and I played with Zondara's Gravebreakers.

Orion and I were playing with the warband's Rivals Deck, Nick had a Nemesis deck build with Rimewyrm's Bite, and Amanda had a Relic deck I'd made up ages ago and was still in Khagara's deck box.

Despite playing with a Rivals deck and never having played them before, Orion defeated us all, scoring 18 Glory!? Amanda had spent nearly HALF of all her activations trying to kill Pointy Burke... and missed... Every... Single... Time...!?

Friday, 7 June 2024

Despite the CrAzY wind the following Friday, I rode all the way out to the Warhammer Store to play some MORE Warhammer Underworlds. Sean and Nic and Orion were there and I suggested a four-player game. Sean, who'd never played a four-player game, quickly looked up the rules and we discovered WE'VE BEEN PLAYING MULTI-PLAYER GAMES WRONG!? With a four-player game you play only TWO rounds (instead of three)!?

We ignored this and just kept on playing the way we have - a full game of three rounds and four activations per round.

Apparently in a three-player game you play three rounds, but with less activations..?!

I'm guessing these rules are to make the game go quicker...?

Sean played Mollog's Mob with Hungering Parasite. Orion played the Sepulchral Guard with Rime-Locked Rellics. Nic played Cyreni's Razors with Rimewyrm's Bite and I played Grinkrak's Looncourt with just their Rivals deck... I did... poorly.

Sean ended the game with 21 Glory, Nic had 19, Orion has 18 and me... I was trailing waaaaaay behind with 11 Glory... yikes...

Saturday, 8 June 2024

Saturday Finnegan cancelled his D&D game and he and Keiran went out to see a series of short plays - one of which one of the D&D players was in!

So Amanda and I set up a game of Warhammer Underworlds. Because we were both thinking of participating in the event at the end of the month we figured we should pick a warband and get some practice at it... One of the ones I was considering was Zondara's Gravebreakers. It'd fairly consistently scored 12-13 points and either won or was very close in most games I'd played. Amanda wanted to try some new things and settled on Da Kunnin Krew?!

(if you can't read the text on her toque, it says "I will meditate and then I will DESTROY YOU!")

I'm not sure when she snuck in the meditation, but destroy me she did!?

Despite never having even looked at the cards, or even remembering playing against them... (she has played against them, twice, I think...) she managed to get 11 Glory in the end... and I scored six... Just about everything that could go wrong for me did... Every single time I had any sort of plan, it just came apart... Uggghhhh...

So Amanda was thinking Da Kunnin Krew was a contender and would have to play it again...

There is a brief report and a few more pictures, here:

Sunday, Orion and Nic stopped by to try out the Chaos Gargant scenario (with my then newly painted Stand-In Chaos Gargant

It's a completely different

Tuesday, 11 June 2024

Amanda's friend Kin was travelling through on her way from Yellowknife to her summer home in Cape Breton. We played Wingspan. Amanda won

Friday, 14 June 2024

Friday I rode out to the Warhammer Store and played some Warhammer Underworlds with John, the manager.

I loaned him my Zondara's Gravebreakers to try out and I played Skabbik's Plaguepack. When I drew my first hand I realized I was playing with a Nemesis deck I'd quickly put together a few weeks back, but then never used!?

It did pretty okay... Mind you I was playing with a Nemesis deck against someone using a Rivals deck... that they had never even looked at, nevermind PLAYED... so.. not sure if it's actually working out...

Thursday, 20 June 2024

Thursday evening Amanda and I again tried playing in Rivals Format - trying out nore warbands and Rivals decks for upcoming tournament.

I tried the recently painted Thundrik's Profiteers with Rimelocked Relics Rivals deck, Amanda was playing Zondara's Gravebreakers.

Amanda crit-defending FOUR TIMES - once with a DOUBLE CRIT when I rolled a crit and a success!?

She rolled a second double crit on an attack roll... which I defended with a double-crit?! It was nuuuuuuuts....

Despite all that, I won 18-11!?!?

I was thinking Thundrik and Rimelocked Relics might be a contender for the tournament... Amanda and Zondara... not-so-much!

You can read the brief report and see more pictures here:

Warhammer Underworlds - Zondara Versus Thundrik

Sunday, 23 June 2024

Orion and Nic weren't available this week, so Amanda worked all day...

But in the evening we played another quick game to try out options for the Warhammer Underworlds event just ONE WEEK AWAY!!

I brought out Wurmspat again, but tried playing them with Rimewyrm's Bite - which everyone was telling me was a great deck for them to play with! Amanda wanted to try Da Kunnin Krew again.

The final score was only 9-5 and I think both of us were feeling pretty underwhelmed by these warbands...

You can read a bit more about it, and see some pictures of the action, here:

Tuesday, 25 June 2024

Ideally I would have liked to play EVERY day this week... but Monday was Kierans High School Graduation... so...

Tuesday we were back at it, and Amanda was thinking she needed to return to her roots in this game with Morgwaeth's Blade-Coven... but paired with a different Rivals deck! Tuesday she tried out Paths of Prophecy. She was SOMEWHAT familiar with this deck, as we'd built her a Nemesis deck with it... but never used the complete deck in Rivals Format.

I played Skabbik's Plaguepack wth their faction rivals deck...

You can read (and see) about how it all went down here:

Warhammer Underworlds - Morgwaeth's Blade-Coven versus Skabbik's Plague Pack

Wednesday, 26 June 2024

Wednesday Amanda was back with Morgwaeth, but trying out a different Rivals Deck: Rime-Locked Relics. She really struggled with this one... largely because she had not even LOOKED at the cards before trying to PLAY with them... despite doing poorly and being quitre frustrated... she did feel like there was something there and it may be a contender...

I played The Dread Pageant with their faction rivals deck... and probably played my best game EVER with the Dread Pageant!? Probably worked out because Amanda rolled crits for (marginally) less than half of her defence rolls!

You can read all about it here:

Warhammer Underworlds - Morgwaeth's Blade-Coven versus The Dread Pageant

Thursday, 27 June 2024

Thursday Night we got in TWO games!

The first game Amanda played Morgwaeth's Blade-Coven and I played Grinkrak's Looncourt.

In the second game Amanda decided to try out the Storm of Celestus and I played Thundrik's Profiteers!

More about these games here:

Warhammer Underworlds: Two Games on Thursday Night!

Friday, 28 June 2024

If two games on Thursday weren't enough, I played FOUR on Friday!?

First, I rode out to the Warhammer Store for Skirmish Fridays...

Sean was there with Ironsoul's Condemnors. So I tried Skabbik's Plague Pack against them... The game was very close.

Next I dug out the Looncourt to fight the Stormcast. This was less close, but not an overwhelming defeat....

Later When I got home I convinced Amanda to give Ironsoul's Condemnors a try...

First against Skabbik's Plaguepack... which she lost... but not by as much as the last few games!

Then against Thundrik's Profiteers which she soundly defeated!?

I'll probably post a game report of this in the next few days...

Saturday, 29 June 2024

Saturday evening while Finnegan was running his D&D game in the game room, Amada and I tried a few more games of Warhammer Underworlds on the dining room table.

Again she tried Ironsoul's condemnors against Thundrik's Profiteers... and they were just crushed... the Profiteers, that is... like, so badly, I was wondering why I ever even thought it would be funny to show up with them!?

She wanted to try out the Dread Pageant and I decided to try Skabbik's Plaguepack against them. It went very poorly, very fast for the Dread Pageant.

In my first two activations I killed Hadzu and Slakeslash (the warbands big-monster-beat-stick!) and suggested we could just re-set...

Learning from her mistakes... Amanda just CRUSHED the Plaguepack in the next game... Oooof!

I'll probably post a game report of this as well, in the next few days...

Sunday, 30 June 2024

The BIG DAY!!

I ended up taking Skabbik's Plaguepack and Amanda took The Dread Pageant!?

We ended up arriving a bit late, but everyone waited for us!?

When I was last looking at who was saying they would go or were interested - between the local Warhammer Underworlds discord and facebook group, I though we might end up with eight or nine. In the end there were seven, not including John, who opted out of playing and just ran the event (and the store).

With seven, that meant someone got a bye each round.

In the first round I played against Sean and this time he had Hedkrakka's Madmob!?

He just could not keep rolling crits and I could not roll ANY crits and the Plaguepack was throughally defeated 20-4?!

Also in the First Round Nic played against Dray, and Orion played against Jared.

Nic and Dray's game went a little longer than the others so we all watched the end of it.

In Round Two I got the bye... so I hung out for an hour and watched the other games.

Orion was playing Dray and Nic played Jared.

Amanda got to play against Sean.

Originally, I thought we'd planned for a four-round event, but just as pairings were being announced for Round Three, I discovered this was the final round?!

In that final round I played against Orion and her freshly painted Headsman's Curse.

Amanda played against Jared for the Championship... because the Bye at the beginning counted as a "win"...? I guess...?

Jared won that game and with it the event.

I'll will definitely post a game report of this event in the next week....

That's... a LOT of games!!!

That's TWENTY games of Warhammer Underworlds... and ONE game of Wingspan!?

Warhammer Underworlds - Morgwaeth's Blade-Coven versus The Dread Pageant

Wednesday evening, Amanda and I played another game of Warhammer Underworlds - still trying to decide on a warband for the event on Sunday. This time I tried out the Dread Pageant and Amanda played Morgwaeth's Blade-Coven again, but this time with the Rime-Locked Relics Rivals Deck.

This is a super-classic Direchasm/Beastgrave era match-up. I think the first Warhammer Underworlds game I ever played was Dread Pageant versus Morgwaeth's Blade-Coven. As was the first game I played with Amanda!

I figured if I'm building at Hedonites of Slaanesh Vanguard force to play Spearhead games in the soon-to-be-released new edition of Age of Sigmar, I should at least CONSIDER bringing the one Hedonites warband to the event. I love the models of this warband, but I've always struggled with playing them... things just never really worked out... I don't recall winning very many games with them... It got marginally better when I put together a deck (which would now be called a "Relic" deck) and that did okay... but because I was only playing against Amanda at the time, she got bored of playing against them and I kind of stopped playing them...

Amanda was trying out a totally new deck again this evening. She's played AGAINST Rime-locked Relics a number of times - Orion's played with them a lot. I used them with Thundrik's Profiteers, just last Friday! But she pays very little attention to what others are doing and what cards they're playing!

I set up fairly aggressively - I had an objective card called Godseekers - which gave two glory if all surviving fighters were in Enemy Territory... Also I had an objective that required a Friendly Fighter be adjacent to TWO Enemy Fighters and one that required taking an Enemy Fighter on and Objective token out of action... The last one was tough... one one hand I KNEW she would jump Kyrssa and/or Lethyr onto Objectives and 3/4 of my warband could take either out with one successful attack... BUT... my warband only inspires if there are a total of SIX wound counters on fighters... and KILLING them means there are no wound counters on them... so I had to focus on ones that could take more damage (and maybe shoot one of them with Hadzu, who only dealt

In the first round, Kyae shot Glisette dealing one damage.

Vasillac charged Morgwaeth and missed.

Morgwaeth maneuvered around Vasillac and hit. (so that's ME with three Damage tokens!)

Slakeslash charged Morgwaeth and hit, dealing two to her, and one to himself... boom... SIX Damage dealt and my entire warband inspires.

I had a card that healed one of Vasillacs wounds.

Is this two of the same picture...? I guess...

Ah well... So that freed up Glisette to charge Lethyr - who was on an objective token and take her out of action, scoring me a bonus glory for the Objective Card!

Khamyss charged Vasillac and hit, thinking it was going to take him out -as she had forgotten I'd used a card to heal him!

Hadzu moved up and shot at Khamyss and missed.

I scored for everyone being in enemy territory and one for all having move or charge tokens that I'd drawn to replace the surge I'd scored earlier...

Starting off round two, Vasillac stabbed Morgwaeth taking her out of action.

Then Khamyss killed Hadzu... and no one got to inspire because Morgwaeth was gone (She has a special ability to inspire a Friendly Fighter every time an Enemy Fighter is taken out of action). I played deadly embrace which allowed Hadzu to attack back before he died, and he hit and dealt Khamyss one damage...

Slakeslash charged Khamyss... and MISSED!! Whoopsie!

Khamyss hit Slakeslash and knocked it off the objective it was on.

Glissette stabbed and killed Khamyss

Kyrae shot and killed Glissette. (I briefly considered using Shared Pain - which allows a Friendly Fighter that takes damage to transfer the Damage to a Friendly fighter within three hexes and pass all the damage dealt to Slakeslash - who could take it! In the end I didn't as it would have left THREE fighters with only one or two wounds left... It meant I couldn't score an objective I had which required holding two objectives... but it would probably keep Vasillac and Slakeslash alive and the two of them could deal some SERIOUS damage!

Vasillac stabbed and killed Lethyr...

It was quite the SLAUGHTER!!

The Third Round started with only Kyrae left. Amanda went first and shot at Vasillac, hitting and dealing one damage! (he had only one left... but I was still holding onto my shared pain card from ROUND ONE!

Then Slakeslash charged and killed Kyrae...

I had to charge with Slakeslash to keep him within three of Vasillac, in case my first attack missed. If it had been Vasillac that went... and missed... and Kyrae attacked and hit, Slakeslash would not be close enough to use Shared Pain (and pass any damage dealt to Slakeslash - who could take it!)

Also, if Slakeslash missed, and Kyrae just attacked again, Slakeslash would be supporting and also support when Vasillac charged. Amanda probably wouldn't have done that, she'd have charged vasillac, but at least Slakeslash would be close to soak wounds and maybe move in and attack after Vasillac did a charge...? I don't know...

I had given Slakeslash an upgrade that increased its Damage to 3, but Amanda had given Kyrae an upgrade that reduced Damage by one... which meant the blow itself wouldn't take her out... I briefly considered NOT pushing her back into the Lethal Hex and finishing her off... on the chance that I could get Vasillac in next to her and score Excess of Carnality (two or more Friendly Fighters next to the same Enemy Fighter)... but she probably woudn't have stayed there and it could potentially give her a chance to score more things and/or take out Vasillac... so I just finished her off!!

This actually allowed Amanda to score an objective for two points! (a friendly fighter with a rime-locked relic is taken out of action!?)

I cycled through objectives and move Vasillac to score Excess of Paramountcy (for my leader holding an objective in enemy territory) along with Excess of Indolency (No enemy fighters with move or charge tokens!)

In the end I scored THIRTEEN Glory!! Amanda only scored... five...? She was pretty cranky about it... but did admit there were some pretty cool cards in the deck she was playing with and there was "definitely something here" and she'd try it again... and acknowledged that it was probably because she hadn't read the cards before trying to play with them!?

I don't fault her for not being able to do that. I know that **I** have a really hard time reading cards and figuring out what they really mean and how they work together without seeing how it works in the game... I need a LOT of plays with a warband/deck before I can remotely feel competent with them... and that's why we're playing games all week!

Warhammer Underworlds - Morgwaeth's Blade-Coven versus Skabbik's Plague Pack

Tuesday evening  say down for ANOTHER Game of Warhammer Underworlds.

Once again, we trying out options to take to the event on Sunday - less than a week away now! Kind of running out of time....

Amanda brought out an old favourite: Morgwaeth's Blade-Coven and tried pairing them with Paths of Prophecy. Now, she has used a Paths of Prophecy NEMESIS deck, and that worked out pretty good for her. But this was JUST the Paths of Prophecy deck.

I decided to play Skabbik's Plague Pack...  and played pretty aggressively with them - jumping onto objectives where I could and attacking anyone adjacent.

We're both playing warbands that kind of want to hold objectives... but it was WAY MORE important for Amanda with the Paths of Prophecy deck!

I feel like in the first round there was a lot of attacking but not a lot of hitting...?

It was quite the brawl going on... which was fine... it meant I ended the round with a bunch of Befoulers next to Enemy Fighters.... which meant those Enemy Fighters would be staggered to start off the new round!

Also I befouled both my Territory and Enemy Territory and so everyone inspired!

For my final activation in the first round, Skritter charged way across the board and chewed on Kyrssa in my last activation, dealing a damage and pushing her off the objective she was holding... I had a card that allowed me to push a Friendly Fighter, to keep Skritter next to Kyrssa. Skritter alone on the objective would have befouled the territory, but there were also two or more Friendly Fighters in the Territory, so...

At the beginning of the next round. Kyrssa was staggered (because starting a round adjacent to a stinky-stinky befouler) and I started things off with Skritter attacking Kyrssa and taking her out of action!

And then things got nasty and killy...

I kept focused on the Objective Cards and trying to score them, and if there was a chance of standing on an Objective token or taking a swing at the murder-aelves while doing so... I would do that... but mostly just stuck to the cards... and that kind of worked out!

I ended the game with FIFTEEN Glory to Amanda's nine!

I was leaning towards a different warband for the Warhammer Underworlds event on Sunday... but now I have to seriously consider these stinkers... Primarily I want to play something fun and a little silly... and these are super fun and I'm really happy with the paint job on them and the cards are super thematic to the warband - so many bursting sores and rancid vomit and smells... so many smells... I get to make fart jokes all day... AND they can do pretty good in a game!?

Amanda wasn't so sure about using Paths of Prophecy as a deck in a Rivals setting... It's got some good stuff that mixed with a few of the Blade-Coven's cards can make a pretty okay Nemesis deck... buuuuut....

She has a couple more decks to try out with them; Rime-Locked Relics and Rimewyrm's Bite.

Warhammer Underworlds - Da Kunnin Krew versus Zondara's Gravebreakers

 The Lost Post.

Amanda and I played this game a few weeks back on... the 8th of June!? When I first suggested maybe we should get some one-one-one games in with Rivals decks so we at least look like when know what we're doing at the event at the end of the month... and then we didn't play again for almost two weeks! And apparently I forgot to do a quick game report!?

Amanda wanted to try something new so she grabbed Da Kunnin' Krew - which she has played against - at least once or twice - but had no recolection of... never played herself, let along looked at the cards.

Up until this point, I'd been having pretty good luck with Zondara's Gravebreakers. I went into this game genuinely worried that I was just going to DESTROY Amanda and discourage her from attending the event with me...

If you can't read her new hat, it says: "I will meditate and then DESTROY YOU!"

I'm not sure WHEN, exactly, she was able to do any meditation, but it worked out!?

It's been a while since we played, so I don't remember exactly how it all went down.

Up until this point I'd pretty consistently won with Zondara's - except for one (but that game was super close - lost by a point, and would have won, except I'd read an objective card that I EASILY would have been able to score... but because I hadn't read it properly, did the wrong thing...) scoring 12-13 points...

This game just didn't work out... and Amanda just wrecked every chance I had to score Objective cards... without even knowing she was doing it... It just kind of worked out that she happened to do the EXACT things needed to wreck every plan I made...

Took out a zombie that I REALLY NEEDED to get to a particular objective token... Jumped on an objective token I needed to get on to score...

I THINK Zondara and Ferlain made it to the end... or... maybe not, because then I would have had the BOTH STILL ALIVE card I could score...? or I just drew that at the wrong time and... Yeah... I don't know... Things just didn't work out.

I did see how Zondara's can quite easily be countered in this game, though... I like Zondara's Gravebreakers, because they are less dependent on being able to KILL lots of stuff. You can kind of do your own thing, putting zombies on objectives and doing their special grave-break action and scoring points for it... if people try to kick off you Zombies, that's FINE because they can be brought back the very next activation with another gravebreak action - and they come back INSPIRED and tougher! You kind of WANT people to take out your zombies...

The counter, though, is aggresively moving into Zondara's territory and standing on those objectives - denying the Gravebreak action - and hitting zombies standing next to them!

Amanda won 11-6... it wasn't an overwhelming defeat (like when Orion beats me 20-4!?)... and I learned stuff!
