Brutal/Technical DM
- WORMED (ESP) – Krighsu
o There were a lot of Sci Fi themed DM albums this year, but this one takes the cake! Probably the most atmospheric TBDM album of all times! Conveying the atmosphere of a bleak, unfriendly relentless cosmos (I know that the cosmos literally does not have ANY atmosphere, but I think you get what I mean – and if not, go and read some Lovecraft, dammit!). I loved those guys ever since I discovered them in the early 2000´s. The guitar tone, the vox, the overall sound all that makes for such an eery and unsettling Behemoth of an album you absolutely shouldn´t neglect, even if you are not a fan of ´em generally.
- Xenomorphic Contamination (ITA) - Colonized From The Inside
o The next Sci Fi album, albeit their approach is closer to the “traditional” TBDM approach. Very well arranged, played and produced.
- Infecting The Swarm (GER) – Abyss
o One-man Tech. BDM project from Bavaria. Very well crafted and executed. Interesting lyrical themes and a cool artwork. Highly entertaining!
- Internal Suffering (COL) – Cyclonic Void Of Power
o A Band I discovered this year, don´t know much about them, only that this album is really good. Techy, brutal, even somewhat “proggy” at times. Probably my favorite South American DM album of the year!
- Inherit Disease (USA) – Ephemeral
o I know, some of you don´t like this band, especially the vox – but I believe the vocals fit perfect into the overall tone and atmosphere (that might be a big word for a Brutal Tech DM Band, I admit) and therefor I just love them! The songwriting is top-notch, as well.
- Murder Made God (GRE) – Enslaved
o While their last one was not bad, this one is great! Very entertaining. Makes think of Kronos at times ;)
Technical DM
- DECEPTIONIST (ITA) – Initializing Irreversible Process
o What a great album!!! I discovered them when someone in the cbox gave them a lot of props, and since I take your recommendations very seriously. Another great hyper technical, hyper fast Tech DM Band from Lazio and one of the discs I enjoyed most this year!
- Ade (ITA) – Carthago Delenda Est
o Ade, from Rome, Lazio. I liked all their releases but this might be their best. Excellently crafted and played, with just the right amount of samples and original/ancient instruments thrown in.
- Carnophage (TUR) – Monument
o I had the chance to see and meet these guys at the 2016 Berlin Death Feast and it was awesome! Not only did they perform exceptionally, they are really nice guys!!
- In Demise (GER) - …Behold, A Pale Sky
o no comment ;)
- Aborted (BEL) – Retrogore
o Aborted is a Band I sometimes tend to…forget how great they are (I guess that's about what I wanted to say). They are so fucking productive and never fail to deliver. You get what you expect, sometimes even a bit more.
- Omnihility (USA) – Dominion Of Misery
o GEEZ… these guys always have issues with their production (or is it me having issues with their production?)!! Always a bit flat, the guitar not very audible, but anyways, this is a great album. I liked the Origin-like approach of their debut, but I didn't like their 2nd album, with it´s more melodic style, much. On this album they combined both to a great, more original style.
- Imperium (UK) – Titanomachy
o Great Tech DM with mythological themes. Somewhat reminiscent of the Lazio style DM.
Old School/„Traditional“ DM
- GxSxD (JPN) – The Adversary
o The best Polish DM album of this year comes from…Tokyo, Japan! Not kidding, they sound so much like a polish band I wouldn't have considered them coming from anywhere else for a second, if I wouldn't have known better from the start. I think it was Nikki who introduced them in the cbox and TBH my first impression was good but not more. Now I have to say, I´m overwhelmed. This album grew so strong on me, it didn't leave my MP3 player since I first loaded them onto it.
- REVILED (IDN) – Hateful And Bloodshed
o If I had a true ranking this disc would definitely be among the top 3! It´s old school US/NYDM at it´s best. Reminding me of old Deeds Of Flesh and old Suffocation at the same time, I love it!!
- Dehumanized (USA) – Beyond The Mind
o Another slab of old school NYDM, this time by a NY Band. I like this one better than their last album, which sounded like a “poor man´s Suffo” at times, but this one is much stronger and more in the vein of their own style.
- Escarnium (BRA) – Interitus
o It´s a shame that only so few South American Bands really stood out this year, but Escarnium did, for sure! Very good old school DM from really cool people!!
- Brutality (USA) – Sea Of Ignorance
o I rediscovered this album when preparing the list, completely forgot about it. As it turns out, I almost missed a very good comeback of a Band I liked a lot in the 90´s.
- Brutally Deceased (CZE) – Satanic Corpse
o Great raw old school DM, not surprised finding them on Carls list. Great artwork, too!
- Carnal Tomb (GER) – Rotten Remains
o A relatively young Band from Berlin, my hometown. They play highly entertaining, very raw old school DM with occasional Doom influences.
- Grace Disgraced (RUS) – Lasting Afterdeaths
o This album might be considered Prog DM, as well, but they have such a distinct old Chuck Schuldiner Death sound to them (and that´s a good thing in this particular case), I had to put them here.
- God Enslavement (GER) – Consuming The Divine
o A relatively young Band, all members have a very long history in bands I admittedly know none of (but that´s probably my fault), except from Vince Matthews from Criminal Element (and of course early Dying Fetus). Fast well played ferocious DM with one of the best singers IMHO (how the hell did they get him?).
Progressive / „neo-Classical“ DM
- CRATOR (USA) – The Ones Who Create, The Ones Who Destroy
o What a title! And what an album!!! It seems we are in a new age of supergroups and most of them don´t fail to deliver (see Conflux!). This is an album that demands you to take your time, to accept and adapt (that sounds polemic, doesn't it?). The production is quite unconventional for a group of that caliber, and definitely needs some time to get used to, but once you came to that point, it is absolutely not bad, at all. It has a very raw but defined sound. Maybe that could be something for Addict in terms of sound? The songs are not overly complex in structure, but offer alot to discover.
- Dawn Of Dementia (USA) – Immolation Of Avernis
o Another band I hadn't of before. They play a brutal version of Spawn Of Possession style “neo-Classical” DM. Highly recommended!
- First Fragment (CAN) – Dasein
o This is fav in terms of (as I call it) neo-classical DM. It´s the first of 3 Bands in this list featuring Pat Tougas. He is a very talented rather young guitar player and obviously he is very crative. Not only in terms of quantity, but also quality! This album offers a lot of variation without ever being cheesy or kitsch (or “romantic” as might call it). Very well crafted, never tech just for being tech. Everything makes perfect sense on this album, hats off!!!
- Rotting Obscene (USA) – Depths Of Decay
o I have seen this disc on the list of some others here, so I suppose I don´t have to say much about that one.
- Virvum (SUI) – Illuminance
o Great neo-classical shit from Switzerland. It says a lot that in a year in which Obscura and Grossmann released discs, none of them show up on this list, but the lesser known bands like them, First Fragment, Dawn Of Dementia and of course Vale Of Pnath take the cake!
- Vektor (USA) – Terminal Redux
o Somehow this band completely went under my radar ´till last year. Great Technical/Progressive Death/Thrash in the vein of Nocturnus and the likes. Check it out if you haven´t, yet!
- Chthe´ilist (CAN) – Le Dernier Crépuscule
o The 2nd band featuring Pat Tougas and he´s not only guitar player but multi instrumentalist here. Hard to describe this band. Demilich and the likes definitely come to mind. If you´re into more obscure stuff check ´em out!
- Vale Of Pnath (USA) – II
o Another great album of this band. They just get better and better with every recording. I expect a lot of these guys in the future!
- Zealotry (CAN) – The Last Witness
o This is Tougas´ 3rd band on my list. Again very obscure and eery shit. For sure quite similar to Chthe´ilist but I don´t give a shit!
Other Styles
- ANAAL NATHRAKH – The Whole of the Law
o Damn, I love these guys and after a couple of rather underwhelming (by their standards) albums this one´s pure fucking aural hell (again)!!!
- Dormant Ordeal (POL) – We Had It Coming
o Raw and harsh Blackened DM, only with quite a modern production. But for me it works perfectly well. Lots of atmosphere (most of it evil and hateful) on this album. That´s the way I like my Polish DM!
- Necromorph – Under the Flag
o These guys actually are pals of ours and I love their shit. A mix of Crust Grind and DM. Very well done!!
- Serpentine Dominion – Serpentine Dominion
o If you read my initial „rant“ on this album, this might come as a surprise. What can I say, my points of criticism remain the same, only I now weigh them differently. After some more spins the “Metal” in it got me so hard, the cleans didn't strike so hard anymore. Still quite annoying at times, but the the rest absolutely makes up for it!
- Belligerent Intent – The Crucifire
o Raw, relentless, fast as hell Blackened DM from Australia. Not much more to say about that one.
EPs and others
- DEFEATED SANITY (GER) – Disposal of the Dead / Dharmata
o I had my problems placing this one. Is it an album? Well the Band rather labels it “a split with themselves” – what a great idea! The outcome is amazing. The first half is rather “conventional” DS material, while the other is a perfectly executed homage to the early to mid-90´s Morrisound Progressive DM era.
- Involuntary Convulsion (AUS)– Tempus Edax Rerums
o Ultra technical Brutal DM in the vein of Defeated Sanity and Disgorge. Very good Ep, but short. Hope for more of them to come in the future.
- Conflux (CAN) – The Inception
o Awesome Canadian supergroup in the vein of Cryptopsy. 3 songs each with a different singer, letßs see what they´ll bring in the future.
- Desolator (SWE) – Spawn Of Misanthropy
o Straight up, no frills pure DM. Quite polish in their style, at times, but that's completely fine with me!
- Morphongenetic Malformation (RUS) – Dominion Of Primordial Chaos
o Great Slam Death that is NOT boring or stupid!!! Looking forward to hearing more of these guys!
- Krylithsic (GER) – Beast Of The Northern Hemisphere
o This is band of friends from my hometown that has been around for quite some time now, but had some problems with line-up changes and stuff that kept them from getting where they deserve to be. Hope the future will bring more from them!
Honorable Mentions
- Brujeria (MEX) – Pocho Aztlan
o Everybody´s favorite mexican band with zero mexican band members is back, and guess what – they grind!
- Face Of Oblivion (USA) – Cataclysmic Desolation
o Quite a solid album. Not as good as their debut IMO, production is not perfect and I absolutely do´t like the new singer! But nonetheless this is a good album!!
- Gutted (HUN) – Martyr Creation
o This album probably deserves to rank much higher, but it came out so late and I hadn´t had enough time to listen to it oten enough…all lame excuses, this is my fault.
- Cyphonism (GER) – Obsidian Nothingness
o This is very good Tech DM, but has just a bit too much Core or Djent in it for my tastes. But if you get over that, or it doesn´t affect you at all (or even is what you like), this is a good listen.
- Onomasy (ESP) – Ashes And Dust
o The only thing that sepperates this album from similar albums higher on my list is that their songwriting, or arrangement is not (yet) quite as good as of the others, but that´s a very hard judgement; I´ll admit. If there weren´t so much AWESOME releases in the same “genre” I would have ranked them higher.
- Killer Of Gods (IDN) – Mental Retardation Force
o Good slab of Technical DM. Productions is lacking a bit, but that´s ok.
- Pighead (GER) – Until All Flesh Decays
o Another good album from my hometown even has our Drummer in the lineup!
- Neurogenic (INT) – Ouroboric Stagnation
o Brutal Tech DM. Very entertaining, but production is not perfect.
- Grausig (IDN) - Di Belakang Garis Musuh
o Very entertaining slab of Indo brutality! Might very well madsde it to the tops, if I invested more listening time – so, rather my fault!
Fun-fact: “Grausig” is a rather old fashioned/childish German term, roughly translated to “gruesome”.
- Azooma (IRN)– The Act of Eye
o Another band from a rather exotic place: Iran(!). Very interesting Progressive DM from a band that´s been around for 12yrs, now. But they have only released this album and an EP in 14 – hope they´ll bring us more in the future!
- Unmerciful (USA) – Ravenous Impulse
o This is the disc I struggled most with this year. I loved their debut and waited 10 yrs for a new album of them to come, but the album that eventually came was probably my biggest disappointment this year! Don´t get me wrong. This is mainly because of the high expectations I held. This is a good album and it actually grew on me, but I´m still disappointed. The production is not very good, infact the guitars are completely buried in the mix and the drums and vox are way too loud. Now for the vox, their new singer pretty lame and even powerless, IMHO! The new songs are also more complex than before, but to me the straight forward approach of their debut was better.
- Karmacipher (CHN) – Necroracle
o Another disc that probably just came too lat for me to properly consider. Awesome Progressive DM from Hong Kong. Quite some Ulcerate in there.
- WORMED (ESP) – Krighsu
