The Death Chamber's Best of 2020

I have been very indifferent about creating a year-end list for 2020 and not because it wasn't another stellar year for death metal, but just because the year was such a dumpster fire otherwise in my opinion. Between the pandemic and the reaction to the pandemic and the reactions to everything else that happened last year, I've just been ready to move on but to keep with tradition, which is important in these days, I will take the time to remind errybody of a few albums that I liked in 2020.

This is not a comprehensive list and I admittedly didn't even come close to listening to every release either thoroughly or otherwise but there were several albums that grabbed my attention for one reason or another and here they are in no particular order.

SourceRa's Best of 2020

Well, finally I made it. I finished my Best-Of-2020-List. And what a year it was, in retrospective. Actually, it shoudn´t be a surprise that year one of the pandemic would turn out to very fruitful for DM, since times of crisis are almost always highly inspiring to artists in general and especially for the ones concentrating on the darker sides of living. Considering the process of creating music (in particular rather complex stuff as DM), I believe the bulk of what came out in 2020 was rather benefiting from the fact, that most people just had more time to finish stuff, that was already “in progress”, meaning I think that the “artistic influence” will show much more in this year – and possibly the ones coming. With that said, let´s start with my little retrospective, shall we?

  • Absvrdist/A Million Dead Birds Laughing  (USA/AUS)– Split

the worst thing about this Split is it´s length! AMDBL deliver their trademark sound, which surely is not for everyone, but I totally dig! Absurdist play some nice Crust-Grind with a certain twist – loads of raw Punk-energy in it.

  • Abysmal Dawn (USA) – Phylogenesis

Another fantastic album, only a bit too clinical in the production.

  • Ahtme (USA) – Mephitic

Not all songs are equally strong IMO, but when it get´s good, shit get´s really good!

Still don´t have no f***in´clue what their name is supposed to mean, though.

  • Akurion (CAN) – Come Forth To Me

From the very first tune you can tell, that these guys are from Canada. Somewhere between Cryptopsy and the almighty Gorguts with Mike DiSalvo on vox.

  • Anaal Nathrakh (UK) – Endarkenment

Not only probably the best f***ing title in all 2020, but I couldn´t come up with a better characterization of our “era” (envy off). Maybe not their strongest album, but still a damn good one. I hear a lot of At The Gates in the more melodic tracks.

  • Apep (GER) – The Invocation Of The Deathless One

Slightly Egyptian-themed OSDM from Zwickau, Saxony. More of an underground aesthetic, especially sound wise than with Maat. Very entertaining. I wonder what´s with my fellow countrymen and ancient Egypt! There´s probably not much for you on this list, Carl, but you should give these guys a go (if you haven´t already, actually didn´t bother checkin´if it even ended up on your list tbh)

  • Arsebreed (NED) Butoh

This is probably my no.1 of 2020!

I usually have the entire year on my player and listen in shuffle. When these songs came up, I was a bit confused, because I didn´t remember them being on the Disavowed album – but they sure as hell sounded just like Disavowed. Then I checked and realized: This is literally a second Disavowed. “ Members from Disavowed, 2 ex-Disavowed + 1 from Bloodcum and their last release is aeons old. Dutch brutality at it´s finest!!!

  • Beneath The Massacre (CAN) – Fearmonger

FUCK! I just realized, this has to be my no.1, or maybe both...anyways. I wasn´t even aware they reunited, so this one came as very welcomed early surprise. Probably their best to date. Awesome title, too – maybe second after Endarkenment.

  • Bowel Stew (ITA) – Putridarium

Highly entertaining BDM with some Goregrind influences, especially in the vox. Their cover of “Slowly We Rot” is hilarious!

  • Contrarian (USA) – Only Time Will Tell

Definitely not an album I can listen to anytime, but when I´m in the mood for some prog, it doesn´t get much better than this. I sense a certain Sadist vibe on that particular album. And the songs are refreshingly short for prog, too.

  • Crawling Chaos (ITA) – XLIX

Metal Archives has them labeled as Death Metal/Grindcore, yet I don´t hear much Grind in here, rather the expected roman mix of brutally and (some)tech – less tech as in HOP or Hid Div, though.

  • Cytotoxin (GER) – Nuklearth

Again, probably their best album, to date, definitely on the vox. Grimmo has completely gotten rid of all the rather annoying high-pitched squealing, just traditional guttural gurgling -  you gotta love it. Only negative (again) is the very clinical production, but it´s not as bad as on other Unique leader productions.

  • Deeds Of Flesh (USA) – Nucleus

Well of course it had to be here. It´s easily the best from their final “trilogy”, but I never really stomached their change in style. Here they are closest to their traditional trademark sound. As mentioned above, I´m not a huge fan of that Unique Leader sound and I don´t care much for the vox. Indeed I would have preferred the various guests to take over the vocal duties completely, or at least mainly. I just don´t like his phrasing and rhythm a lot. Many negatives, yet it´s on this  list – that´s how fucking good it is, anyways!

  • Defeated Sanity (GER) – The Sanguinary Impetus

Finally their back with another full album, which happens to be the perfect blend of their former “Split with themselves”. This is easily their most complex album so far. Josh is a perfect match on the vox (even more so live) and he´s just a hell of cool guy. I was a bit sad when Christian left, but Lille is just as good a guitar player as he is a drummer.

  • Dehuman Reign (GER) – Descending Upon The Oblivious

I suppose there´s not much I have to say about them, here. Just good OSDM.

  • Devangelic (ITA) – Ersetu

Again, this is my favourite album by the band in question. Much darker sounding and the vocals are the best I heard from Paolo, also much better comprehensible than usually.

  • Disavowed (NED) – Revocation Of The Fallen

Generally what I said about Arsebreed applies here, too. Only I like Arsebreed´s album a tad more. Anyhow, I waited 12-13 yrs f or this one and it was fuckin´worth it!

  • Disevared (IDN) – Inherit The Period Of Suffering

The first Indonesian entry on my list. And it´s amazing. A bit of a Brodequin vibe accompanied by some slammy, more modern elements on here.

  • Disembodied (IDN) – Eternal Worshipper

The next Indonesian band. More of an old-school Dying Fetus vibe, here.

  • Expendiency (IDN) – Disobedience

And Indonesia again. Much darker sounding as the others. The drumming is so damn good!

  • Hateful (ITA) – Set Forever On Me

         Excellent old-school tech with a Finnish touch/sound.

  • In Demise (GER) - Conjuring Dystopia (EP)

Well, of course this had to be here. Despite not being fully satisfied with my own delivery (I still feel I could have done much better), the music is so fucking good – and there´s no credit for me to be had for it at all. I sure am very glad to be in this band. And just on a side-note, I think I really nailed some of lyrics, at least.

  • Inception Of Fall (CZE) – Builders Of The World (EP)

Modern Tech Death with some Psycroptic influences, among others. If your not afraid of some slight Core this is freaking good!

  • Inferi (USA) – Of Sunless Realms (EP)

Not for everyday, but on occasion very enjoyable. Boiser on vox is a good addition. Maybe a bit heavy on the Synths at times, but it is more brutal than their older stuff and that´s a good thing.

  • Kaligula (IDN) – Doctrination Of Atismadha

More Indonesian quality DM. A bit of HOP in some moments.

  • Nader Sadek (USA) – The Serapeum (EP)

Probably his strongest one, to date. Surely the most brutal/chaotic one.

  • Ominous Scriptures (BLR) - The Fall of the Celestial Throne

Dark, atmospheric, brutal and fast as fuck!!!

  • Perdition Temple (USA) – Sacraments Of Descension

This is essentially the follow-up band to Angel Corpse and that´s exactly what you can hear here. Satanic, raw, Tampa-style Black/Death at it´s best!

  • Profanity (GER) – Fragments Of Solace

After their 2017 album the most surprising thing here is the quick succession from the last one(considering it took them 17 yrs to rd the latter – at closer examination: 1st 1997, 2nd 2000, 3rd 2017, 4th 2020...I hope there is no pattern ind this!). Well, maybe there´s one or the other little surprise in the guests section.

  • Putrid Pile (USA) – Revel In Lunacy

If you know PP, you know what to expect, Sean doesn't ever disappoint! BDM with some tasty Grindcore thrown in for the good measure.

  • Scarab (EGY) – Martyrs Of the Storm

Another great release from Scarab. Didn´t expect anything else.

  • Schizogen (UKR) – Spawn Of Almighty Essence

         Dark, technical, brootal AF!

  • Scordatura (SCO) – Mass Failure

I remember their last album was on a couple of “End-of-the-year-lists” back in 2016. This one is just as good!

  • Spectrum Of Delusion (NED) – Neoconception

If you are into TDM in slightest, you should check that one out. It´s refreshingly different from much of the other stuff.

  • Sufism (IDN) – Republik Rakyat Jelata

We have to stop the climate crisis right now!!! We can´t have all these great bands vanish into the pacific.

  • Syphilic (USA) – Empty Nest

Fuck me, this is some DARK shit! Especially in the topic (which is very darkly referenced on the cover art) to the dark tone, the dark production to the dark sound BDM...you me. Brian Forgue seems to be a very sick(see, I didn´t write “dark” again) genius.

  • Tribe Of Pazuzu (USA/CAN) – King Of All Demons

         Second EP, where´s that fuckin´full-length?

  • Unmerciful (USA) – Wrath Encompassed

Much better than the last one, but still not close to the brilliant debut. I liked their short, rather simple stuff much more!

As a little extra, here´s my list from 2019 – A time, when Corona was, what outside of Middle/Eastern Europe, might pass as a beer. There were just to many releases, with much to high quality, to just skip it.

  • A Million Dead Birds Laughing (AUS) – To The Ether

Well I think I said a little about their sound above. Maybe the closest thing to compare them with would be Cephalic Carnage, just in terms of weirdness and unexpected shit happening.

  • Ade (ITA) – Rise Of The Empire

The expected Rome-style TDM with some ancient instruments and rhythms to separate them from all the other great bands in that neighbourhood. Excellent album!

  • Apostate (UK) – At The Tomb Of Sanity

Slightly technical OSDM from Preston, Lancashire. Very entertaining, indeed!

  • Bethledeign (USA) – Iconography Of Suffering

These guys are actually around since 2001, according to MA, this is their full-length debut and it´s very good.

  • Bleak Flesh (CHL) - ...And Save Us From Silence

Judging from the artwork and the band name, I expected a rather typical BDM album, but instead this some pretty unique Technical Progressive DM, which happens to be exceptionally well crafted. Don´t care much for the occasional chanting, but it doesn´t annoy me enough to put me off.

  • Bodyfarm (NED) – Dreadlord

I believe to remember this one being liked by the most of you, so I guess there´s not much I have to say. This is the way I like my OSDM.

  • Beheaded (MLT) – Only Death Can Save You

I always  liked Beheaded and this might by their best to date! Great TDM with a lot of variation in it´s songs.

  • Cannabis Corpse (USA) – Nug So Vile

CC, just as the original CC, have never disappointed me. Fantastic old school TDM which does not require intoxication of any kind, but it sure doesn´t hurt the experience.

  • Contrarian (USA) – Their Worm Never Dies

I completely forgot that this album was released so recently. If anything this is even better than their 2020 release.

  • Deivos (POL) – Casus Belli

I just realized, that there was not a single polish band on my 2020 list. This is some high quality polish TDM.

  • Demiurgon (ITA) – The Oblivious Lure

More italian BTDM excellence. Somehow typically italian in sound, yet quite different from Hid Div, HOP and the likes.

  • Devourment (USA) – Obscene Majesty

Fuck I never expected them to be that good, again. This is the sound they helped establishing in the first place. Dirty, raw and totally unrelenting.

  • Disentomb (AUS) – The Decaying Light

This is surely one of the top five of 2019. One of the best TBDM albums in total. Atmospheric, dark and beautifully eerie, yet uncompromisingly brutal when they have to.

  • Equipoise (USA) – Demiurgus

Well, with All-Star bands it´s always tricky. Seldom they live up to, what the individual members promise. This one is different! This is the new gold-standard for Progressive Technical Death Metal (still can´t decide whether to find this” sub-sub-sub-genre” schematic ridiculous or helpful. Well, I guess one doesn´t exclude the other) that never compromises any of it´s brutality or ferocity. Definitely top 3 of the year!

  • Exhumed (USA) – Horror

They´re doing Carcass better than Carcass do, these days! Pure old-school worship.

  • Hideous Divinity (ITA) – Simulacrum

Hid Div manage to still get better and better with every subsequent release. This is especially remarkable considering the very high standard they started with. This is their darkest (speaking of dark have you seen the vid to “The Embalmer”?) and most brutal album, so far.

  • Hour Of Penance (ITA) – Misotheism

Always a close second to the above, when it comes to the big Lazio bands, this is probably their best one, yet. Totally unre-fucking-lenting!

  • Infant Annihilator (UK/USA) – The Battle Of Yaldabaoth

I have a feeling IA have a rather poor reputation among Metalheads, deeming them Deathcore, or sth. But I think this is completely unjustified. MA even states, they only been accepted due to that last album, which is rather silly, but let´s not go into site-politics of MA. I heard their debut in 2012 and even then it was pretty decent Tech Death, to me. Then I admittedly completely forgot about them, as probably the rest of the world did, until saw the excellent vid for “Blasphemian” and was pretty much blown away. Hands down, this is my undisputed no.1 album of 2019. So fucking brootal, virtuoso and well written!

  • Infecting The Swarm (GER) – Ruinous (Demo)

Only 2 songs, but to me ITS is the spearhead of that particular style of Brutal/Tech DM, not only from Germany.

  • Kakothanasy (SUI) – Dystomorph

One could call them “a poor man´s Defeated Sanity”, but that would be unfair. The inspiration is undeniable, yet this is a very entertaining one.

  • Nile (USA) – Vile Nilotic Rites

I was really expecting TDW´s departure to be more impactful, but to my surprise it was not. The guy filling in for him even manages to “emulate” his vocal style quite good, without sounding like a ripoff at all.

  • Nucleus (USA) – Entity

Very good OSDM of the Finnish variety. Very thick and atmospheric sound.

  • Order Ov Riven Cathedrals (ITA) – Thermonuclear Sculptures Blackness

3 albums in 3 years and they are all fantastic! I was rather surprised not to see a new album in 2020, let´s see what 2021 will bring.

  • Orphalis (GER) – The Approaching Darkness

Finally they have a decent production to accommodate their very good TDM.

  • Pathology (USA) – Reborn To Kill

The masters of Slam are back. I just love their grove, also there are some surprisingly melodic parts here and there, that not only manage to be off-putting, but really benefit the rather simple song structures.

  • Relics Of Humanity (BLR) – Obscuration (EP)

More fantastic stuff from these guys. I hope we´ll finally get another album in 2021!

  • Sinners Bleed (GER) – Absolution

I thought SB would have gone the way, most Berlin-based bands went, eventually. The way into insignificance. Then, 2-3 yrs earlier, our guitarist Arne was asked to join them. And here they are, back after 16(!!!) years and scrapping a pretty advanced recording sometimes around 2010 and they deliver, oh boy! Do they deliver!

  • Sleep Terror (USA) – Abreaction

Not much new here. He delivers his trademark blend of high speed instrumental TDM mostly Latino-style guitar interludes, some funk etc. The sheer musicianship and songwriting is jaw-dropping.

  • Tribe Of Pazuzu (USA/CAN) – Heretical Uprising

Nothing to add to what I said in the 2020 section.

  • Vltimas (CAN/POR/USA) – Something Wicked Marches In

Stellar All-Star-Project (pun intended) consisting of Dave Vincent, Flo Mournier and Rune Eriksen. Blackened DM with the one-of-a-kind-voice of D. Vincent. Highly entertaining!

  • Vulgore (JAP) – Crevices Of Obscura

There have been quite some BDM releases from Japan in the last couple of years, yet this one stands out to me most. Not overly technical, very dark and somewhat muddy in sound.

  • Wormed (ESP) – Metaportal (EP)

Another band that never disappoints. Not much changed in their style, so if you liked them before, this will be right up your alley – if you´re not into their style, this EP is not gonna change that.

CarlG's Best of 2020

What a crazy year! BUT, what a great death metal year!

Does it surprise anyone that #1, #2 and #3 are Germany, Netherlands and Sweden!

1) Incremate (Ger) - Mortal Domain, amazing! Another great German death metal band with no EPs, no demos, no splits, and just 3 great full-length albums! Their 2 previous releases made #5 and #8 on my past EOY lists and this one is better! If you like what I like, pure straight-up no-frills death metal be sure and give these guys a chance as they are becoming one of my favorite German bands of late!

2) Burial Remains (Nth) - Spawn Of Chaos, WOW! These Dutch guys put out a very good release last year that made #12 on my list and surprise, outcomes album number two in the wonderful year of 2020! Scarily they changed vocalists, losing Sven from Fleshcrawl who was great but guess what, they have lost nothing and got better! If you like that Swedish chainsaw HM2 give these guys a listen!

3) Monstrous (Swe) - World Under Siege, Rogga does it again, and this time might be his best in my opinion! 10 songs at 30 minutes so a little short but still an exceptional release. This is supposed to be a 2019 and it was out to us on December 29th so I had to call it a 2020! This was easily my #1 for most of the year but once late summer arrived it got some stiff competition.

4) Slaughterday (Ger) - Ancient Death Triumph, late in the year release coming near the end of November and it didn't take me long to love this and for it to climb my list. I've been a big fan of these guys since they popped out of the womb in 2013! All of their stuff has been good but this might be their best, in my opinion.

5) Disrupted (Swe) - Pure Death, damn does this album title explain it in just two words as it is nothing but pure "Swedish" death! I really love their first release and listen to it a lot so when I heard they were bringing this sophomore release out I was very excited for it. No let down with 10 songs at 34:13 and the only thing that could make it better would be 12 songs at 42:00!

6) Sabiendas (Ger) - Repulsive Transgression, been a good fan of these guys with their past stuff but this one is easily their best in my opinion. Other than a 0.44 long intro we have 39:00 of pure death metal and hopefully, these guys hang onto their vocalist as he is very good!

7) Uerberos (Pol) - Stand Over Your Grave, I loved this band's previous release, it has gotten many plays from me but damn, this one is better! After countrymen Eteritus, these guys have become my #2 favorite newer band from Poland and you get 9 songs = 39:06 with no bullshit! What else could you want!?!?

8) Shrapnel Storm (Fin) - Shrapnel Storm, a very underrated Finnish band that has one previous solid slab of death metal! This one is more of the same with 9 songs at 39+ minutes of pure, no-frills DFM! Very happy to have this release sneak to us in such a bad year of this pandemic so hope these guys don't change their style and keep it up! If you liked their first release, this one is better and talk about great death metal vocals, this band does it!

9) Humiliation (Mys) - Parallel Chains Of Command, these guys are a death metal machine and have become one of my favorite bands ever. This release is listed as a 2019 but it wasn't released to us till late May 2020 so here it is! Again, nothing new, nothing different, just pure old school death metal! Very unique also is they have 10 songs and all are named after their 10 previous full-length releases.

10) Deprived Of Salvation (Hun) - Destination Decay, very underrated solid slab of pure death metal from a band with a previous EP but this their first full length. It is always good to have a new band hit us and is it me or do I hear that great Swedish HM2 chainsaw in this band! Please guys, stick together, do not change a thing and give us more!

11) Centinex (Swe) - Death In Pieces, if I remember correctly our buddy TombKeeper talked me into trying these guys back in 2014. Although they had been around a long time (but not as long as me) I never got into them but once they added vocalist Alex Hogbom I loved their two releases with him. Well, they have lost Alex but new vocalist Henrik does a great job and I like it!

12) Benediction (UK) - Scriptures, BIG favorite band of mine going back to the early 90s! They lost great vocalist Dave Hunt but you can't go wrong getting your original guy Dave Ingram back in the saddle! Amazing release with 12 songs = 46:50 of nothing but pure death metal!

13) Necrot (US) - Mortal, these guys made #2 with their premier release on my 2017 list and followed that up with a really solid slab of death metal in 2020. Fortunately for us metalheads, in this mucked up year of Covid the competition was much tougher with so many great death metal releases.

14) Revolting (Swe) - The Shadow At The World's End, after Paganizer and Ribspreader these guys are fastly becoming my 3rd favorite Rogga band. This release has nothing new, not even for Rogga which is probably why I like it so much, pure death metal vocals, great Swedish guitar sound and straight-up 30 minutes of pure DFM!

15) Lik (Swe) - Misanthropic Breed, a band here that I must admit I have ignored over the last 5 years with their 2 previous full-length releases. This one made me go back to them and have to admit they have some really good Swedish death metal. Plus they give us 12 songs at 43 minutes with that great Swedish HM2 which I am really getting into in old age!

16) Dehuman Reign (Ger) - Descending Upon The Oblivious, another in my long list of favorite German bands as their previous was #4 in my 2016 list! Starting in 2013 with an EP and now 2 full-lengths with some pure death metal these guys show some good hope for the future! With 12 songs at 44:14, it doesn't get much better!

17) Unbounded Terror (Esp) - Faith In Chaos, usually we get stuff late, like Monstrous and Humiliation, that were 2019s but not coming until 2020. Well here we have a superb release that is a 2020 but arrived on November 21st 2019! Very good solid, pure death metal from a band that has one previous full length released in 1992 with only a couple other demos and nothing since 1993! I am so glad they reunited and gave us this great death metal release in the awful year of 2020!

18) Skeletal Remains (US) - The Embodiment Of Chaos, another band I have been a good fan of since their beginning! Here we have, in my opinion their best so far, especially by their vocalist and other than a short intro and another instrumental this is nothing but pure death metal. Also a cover song from US band Disincarnate with additional vocals done by Belgium's Carnation vocalist on the bonus edition.

19) Death Courier (Grc) - Necrotic Verses, another quiet, underrated band here! They had a 2013 release that made #13 on my first list here at TDC but after that I haven't given it many listens. This new one has really gotten some attention from me in this boring year of Covid and wow, this band goes back to 1987!

20) Thanatos (Nth) - Violent Death Rituals, just an average fan of these guys in their long run. Remember finding and liking Angelic Encounters on a store shelf back in the early 2000s and listened to their others over the years occasionally. This to me is their best though, as I have listened to this a lot in 2020. Nothing beats old bands that just keep on doing what they do best and not trying to fix what ain't broke.

21) Vader (Pol) - Solitude In Madness, and speaking of bands that won't fix what ain't broke we have just another boring great pure death metal release here! Got to give Peter credit, 30 years with 16 full-length albums and it would be very difficult to pick out the best as he just keeps on doing what Vader does best, creating awesome good death metal! Only negative is the length of just under 30 minutes so be sure and get the bonus 2 cd edition with 4 good live songs.

22) Demonical (Swe) - World Domination, well three of my favorite bands have parted ways with great vocalist Alexander Hogbom in the last couple years, including these guys! Of the three, which you will see more of below, Demonical seems to have filled the roll with the best replacement. Only negative here is there is one strange song, #7 titled Slipping Apart that is slow and has clean vocals, taking me back to my Iron Maiden years. I and many others could do without that on a death metal album.

23) Bear Mace (US) - Charred Field Of Slaughter, damn Rogga has to be playing a trick on us! A Chicago Illinois band here that sounds 100% Rogga to my old ears! Good pure death with some great groove from a US band that has a 2017 album that I wasn't even aware of! If you like Revolting Rogga give this one a shot as you will think you are listening to him!

24) New World Depression (Ger) - Descent, strangely these guys have been around for 15 years with 4 full-lengths and 2 EPs yet I have never heard of or listened to them in the past. They are labeled Death/Death'n'Roll on Metal Archives so that may have turned off lots of us but to me this is pure death metal so give them a shot.

25) Scalpture (Ger) - Eisenzeit, this band had a late 2016 release that over the last few years has become one of my favorite plays, but this one doesn't grab me like that one did. It is still very good and iTunes says I've given it 36 listens but as our buddy SourceRa once said "even your most favorite band can't make a better album every time".

26) Skelethal (Fra) - Unveiling The Threshold, here we go again, another band that has the same old boring sound, nothing progressive, nothing different, just great solid death metal with great vocals and 8 songs at 37:37! Also another very underrated band with a really good 2017 release!

27) Disciples Of Death (US) - Progressive Entrapment, got some really solid pure death metal here. Great riffs, great vocals, 9 songs in the 3:30 to 4:30 range and just as I like it. The only big negative is some really annoying long intros on 3 or 4 of the songs. I don't get it, 1 minute of church choir music in front of a death metal song, WHY?!?!?

28) Spirit Of Rebellion (Can) - Time For Global Refusal, interesting title in this year of pandemic! Along with Dark Century and Mortor these guys are on my list of favorite newer Canadian bands and they are pretty solid with nothing but pure death metal as are their previous releases. Metal Archives lists them as "Death/Black" which I don't get as I hear nothing but pure death metal but as I have said before, I am not good with the genre thing.

29) Carnation (Bel) - Where Death Lies, these guys were a big favorite of mine back in 2015 with an EP and then their fabulous 2018 full length is still one of my favorite listens but damn, this one while not bad just doesn't grab me like their previous stuff. I still enjoy it though and to make it this high in such a great year is quite an accomplishment.

30) Toxaemia (Swe) - Where Paths Divide, these guys are a band that has been around for 25 years yet has no previous full-length releases. I have known them and been a fan since getting into their EPs & Demos 20 years ago. This is a very solid death metal release so give it a chance!

31) Carnal Savagery (Swe) - Grotesque Macabre, what we have here is a clone of Swedish band Desolation, as Mattias and his unique vocals are the frontman for both bands! I got this in early April and for some reason only gave it 3 listens per my iTunes but am doing it a lot here in December. I put it in a playlist with Desolation and cannot tell one from the other which is good for me as I like the same old same old!

32) Graceless (Nth) - Where Vultures Know Your Name, very strange release here, at least to me. I loved their debut release a few years ago and it is still one of the most listened to albums in my collection but this one didn't grab me. It is still good and I listen to it occasionally and wonder, is it me or did they change a little bit? Any fans of these guys that are reading this please give me your opinion!

33) Mnemocide (Che) - Feeding The Vultures, very underrated new band here from the land of the Swiss with only a previous EP out a couple years ago. Nothing special, nothing exceptional, just boring death metal, as I love it! The only negative being 3 songs at about 1 minute each of just noises and spoken words. I don't understand why bands do that.

34) Morta Skuld (US) - Suffer For Nothing, what we have here is the definition of a band that never changes. Crazy how they've been around for 30 years now and it took me until 2016 or 17 to discover them! How I went through all the cd/record stores I have over the years and never found a release from them still amazes me, but I am making up for it now and enjoying these guys very much!

35) Volturyon (Swe) - Xenogenesis, a VERY favorite band of mine over the years and so much so I've communicated with the guys and purchased cds from them. This one is good, so I'm not putting it down but just as Centinex did, losing one of my favorite vocalists, Alex Hogbom takes these guys back a step. As I said, still a good release but damn I miss Alex in these two mentioned bands! (also Demonical)

36) Aposento (Esp) - Conjuring The New Apocalypse, these guys are another pure, boring straight-up death metal band! They have had 2 previous releases that have both made my TDC EOY lists with their 2017 coming in at #4! I don't think they stepped back, just believe the competition has become tougher. One important thing you don't have to worry about with these guys is bullshit as they don't add any, so just music!

37) Puteraeon (Swe) - The Cthulhian Pulse, damn I love this band and their previous stuff! But, in this sick year I can't manage to get this one much higher. It is good stuff, maybe not as good as their previous but still solid loveable death metal and if it had not arrived with so much other good stuff at the time it did it might be higher.

38) Berzerker Legion (Int) - Obliterate The Weak, a pretty solid release from a bunch of guys that have been in just about every band you can name such as Grave, Hypocrisy, Vader, Asphyx, Grand Supreme Blood Court and then Jonny Pettersson, one of Rogga's buddies on vocals. The only negative to me is a bit of melo-ness to them.

39) Deathspawn (Pol) - Reverendus, a surprise release here that came in early December! After hearing it I found out they were reincarnated from a Polish band named Resurrection that had a very good release that came in number 15 on my 2016 list! Upon further investigation there is only one member remaining from Resurrection and that is drummer Krzysztof but this band still puts together some great death metal and with more time might climb higher.

40) Blessed By Perversion (Grc) - Remnants Of Existence, a big favorite band of mine with their great first release from 2016 so I was really excited to hear this was coming. With it not coming until December 25th I have only been able to give it 5 listens per my iTunes. It is good but just not enough time to rate it higher and I do hear some monk chants or symphonics in a song or two.

41) Just Before Dawn (Swe) - An Army At Dawn, I don't know why I haven't been a bigger fan of this band than I am as they fit my style 100 percent. This really is a good solid death metal release with the only negative to me is a different vocalist on every song, which is something this band has done since the beginning!

42) Kurnugia (US) - Forlorn and Forsaken, a pretty good first full-length release from this Cleveland Ohio band! It has 10 songs at 37:18 and other than some backup vocals I don't care for it is a very good release with some great instrumentation. The lead vocalist is very good too!

43) Musical Massacre (Ger) - Inhuman, these guys have been a mild favorite of mine over the years. Nothing special and another band that tries hard to bring the great Bolt Thrower back to life. A negative is it does get a little too melodic for my taste. It is still good for an occasional listen as it has some really good moments!

44) Death Vomit (Idn) - Dominion Over Creation, from the land that loves their slam and extreme brutal death metal these guys are more to the pure death metal side, although a bit brutal at times. Good stuff that should get more listens from me.

45) Wayward Dawn (Dnk) - Haven Of Lies, knowing that this was coming I thought I would like it a lot but it just couldn't handle the above competition. Not bad and a good listen occasionally but a bit too slow at times.

46) Bognor (Grc) - Brain Paralysis, another new band with not even a demo has put out some solid but not spectacular death metal. Anyone into pure, no-frills death metal will enjoy listening to this on occasion. Hopefully these guys will progress and give us more soon!

47) Infiltration (Rus) - Point Blank Termination, damn why can't this be higher! It is really solid, pure death metal, great riffs with only a minor negative of 8 songs at 31 minutes. Otherwise this needs more than the half dozen listens I've managed to give it. Keep it up Russia!

48) Unholy Desecration (US) - Unholy Horde, this one is a bit of a surprise as they are a new band with only a 2018 EP that I have never heard! I really like that they do 10 songs at 52:15 and some really good pure death metal, plus I need some competition for Sentient Horror, Gatecreeper, Necrot, Invasion, Hate Force & Bear Mace as my favorite newer USA bands!

49) Cancerfaust (Pol) - Let The Earth Tremble, some solid death here from the land of the Poles, one of my favorite death metal countries in the past! With my favorites Eteritus, Uerberos, Vishurddha, Slaves Of Evil & now Cancerfaust maybe Poland is making a comeback!

50) One Day In Pain (Swe) - Imperial Fires, what we have here is another good new Swedish band with a first release, and damn does this sound like it could be another Rogga product! Not anything exceptional, just more of the same, good old solid death metal and unlucky as it came out the same day as Incremate and one day before Burial Remains!

51) Purtenance (Fin) - Buried Incarnation, another release by a band I have never been a big fan of but it is definitely my style of death metal. No frills, no symphonics, no dual vocals, 9 songs at 38:45! This came out in June yet I didn't give it any attention until making this list and am enjoying it now.

52) Red Dead (Fra) - Forest Of Chaos, some pretty good pure death here and this band makes me think how great our genre of metal called death is! This could easily have many plays by me if there wasn't such good stuff to hold it back! These guys have a 2017 release that I was not aware of but have found. The vocals on this release are a standout to me so give this one a chance!

53) Monstrous (Swe) - Dawnsleeper, how can a band have two releases in a year, with one being very high and the other so low? Well Monstrous does it as this one just doesn't grab like their first one does. It is good so don't get me wrong but it has a different sound to me.

54) Plague (Grc) - Portraits Of Mind, Greece is having a pretty good year with Sickening Horror, Bognor, Blessed By Perversion & Death Courier so add this to the list! Now come on Greece, give me some new Resurgency and Mass Infection!

55) Deranged (Swe) - Deeds Of Ruthless Violence, this band has been one of my favorite bands over the years as I have all of their cds but for some reason I've lost them. I've given this 10 listens per my iTunes but for some reason not near as great as in the past yet it seems they haven't changed. Is it me, have I changed? I still like this but not jumping up and down to be played like they did in the past. I really blame me, not them, plus all the great competition out there.

56 & 57) Furnace (Swe) - Black Stone Church & Dark Vistas, in the 8 years Thorne has been kind enough to allow us to do these lists I don't remember any band having two releases in one year. Well if you had to guess it wouldn't be hard to say Rogga would be the guy! These are both solid death metal releases, maybe a bit melo or slow at times for my taste but still a good listen as I like them.

58) Reek (Swe) - Death Is Something There Between, some interesting pure Swedish death here and wouldn't you know it, more Rogga as he does guitars in this band. Not as similar sounding as other Rogga bands and labeled as Death'n'Roll but still a decent listen for pure or old school death metalheads!

59) Old Grave (Rus) - From The Graves, with a name and album title like this you would think this was Swedes! What we have is 10 songs = 49:55 and nothing but pure raw sounding death metal! It is a one man band so who knows what the future will bring but pretty good stuff.

60) Darkened (Int) - Kingdom Of Decay, another new band with members from some great bands such as Andrew Whale of Bolt Thrower and Memoriam fame on drums as well as US band Demisery vocalist Gord Olson and Tobias Cristiansson from Grave and Entombed AD on bass. Solid death metal but not a big favorite of mine in 2020.

61) Ghoulhouse (Swe) - Rigor Mortis Intermezzo, more Revolting Rogga here and decent stuff but a very raw edge to it. It seems Rogga has to do something different to every release he has and this one is good but has a unique distorted sound.

62) Surgery (Mex) - Anthems Of Sacrilege, pretty good Mexican stuff here and something I enjoy occasionally but not near as much as the others above. This would be higher if not such a great year for...yep, death metal and this is supposedly a 2019 release but I believe it wasn't out until 2020!

63) Ancient Hymns (Esp) - From Chaos, some pretty good pure death here that I have neglected a bit. After getting this in early June I lost it till November but then gave it a good bit of attention. Unknown to me they have 2017 and 2019 releases I've yet to hear.

64) Untrodden (Swe) - Mortal Departure, late in the year release, not typical sounding Swedish death metal with some mild brutality to it. Per Metal Archives this is a one man project and hopefully potential for more in the future.

65) Dig Me No Grave (Rus) - Under The Pyramids, solid pure death metal from a 10 year old band that has been a mild favorite of mine. After Ammonium, Pannychida, Trigger and Carnage these guys might be high on my list of newer Russian bands! But, they have to fight Infiltration and Old Grave who both beat them with new 2020 releases!

STUFF I LIKE, BUT NOT ENOUGH TIME!

Decimate (US) - Under The Skythe, Pandrador (Pol) - Ov Rituals, Ov Ancestors, Of Destiny, Unborn (Fra) - Ferox, Abrupt Demise (Nth) - The Pleasure To Kill and Grind, No Raza (Col) - Transcending Material Sins, Heretic Warfare (Ger) - Hell On Earth, Dead Carnage (Cze) - From Hell For Hate, Burning Alien (Swe) - Crop Field Death Squad, Bonestorm (Col) - The Emptiness Of Life and Death, Spiteborn (Fin) - Bone Trails, Suffercation (Mys) - Altered The Past Future, Skinning (Prt) - Homicidal Experimentations, Bark (Bel) - Written In Stone, Summoning Death (Mex) - One Step Beyond, Disburied (Col) - Rituals Of Death, Corrosive (Ger) - ED, Mercyless (Fra) - The Mother Of All Plagues, Diabolic (US) - Mausoleum Of The Unholy Ghost, From The Grave (Mex) - Escotomafobia, Gorephilia (Fin) - In The Eye Of Nothing, Gallu Xul (US) - Emissaries Of The Underworld, Unmerciful (US) - Wrath Encompassed, Those Who Bring The Torture (Swe) - Dark Chapters, Disgusting Perversion (Ger) - Eternity Of Death, Megascavenger (Swe) - Songs In The Key Of Madness, Valgrind (Ita) - Condemnation, Lie In Ruins (Fin) - Floating In Timeless Streams, Wombbath (Swe) - Tales Of Madness, Sickening Horror (Grc) - Chaos Revamped, Wombripper (Rus) - Macabre Melodies, Worthless (Fin) - Melancholic Rites, Soulskinner (Grc) - Seven Bowls Of Wrath, Elegis (Pol) - Kultus, Mephistophelian (Svn) - Anotos, Undeath (US) - Lesions Of A Different Kind, Apep (Ger) - The Invocation Of The Deathless One, Cemetery Filth (US) - Dominion, Scarab (Egy) - Martyrs Of The Storm, Ataraxis (Fra) - Black Veil, Avernal (Arg) - Tzompantli, Bloodshot (Ukr) - Stay In The Dark, Cenobite (Rus) - Dark Dimension, Question (Mex) - Reflections Of The Void, Like Rats (US) - Death Monolith, Machinations Of Fate (US) - Machinations Of Fate, Voorhees (Fra) - Chapter Two, Voracious Scourge (US) - In Death, Last Resistance (Ger) - Autopsy Of War, Maniacal Force (US) - Depraved Existence, Beyond Deth (US) - Accept Your Fate

Splits/Eps/Demos

Death Apocalypse (Ger) - Rhapsodies From Hell [ep], easily my favorite EP of the year and no wonder, with 3 members of a great old favorite band of mine Veneral Disease! Hopefully these guys are just warming up and will get us a full length soon.

Coldflesh (Nor) - Phantasmogoric Realms [ep], my second favorite EP from 2020 and some really solid death from the land of Deathfare, Chton, Criterion, Blood Red Throne & the mighty Slogstorm! Let's hope they keep this sound and give us something longer in the near future.

Wilt (Ger) - Wilt/Mortals Path [split], these guys put out a great full length in 2018 that made #20 on my EOY list but should have been higher, as I still enjoy it very much. This follows that one and has 4 very solid songs and hope they have another full length coming soon!

Anarchos (Hol) - Ghospels Of Necromancy [ep], another really good, underrated Dutch Death Metal band and song number 2 has that great Swedish HM2 sound going! They put out a really good full length a few years back that I stumbled on at a cd store and so great to hear another from them but only 2 songs! There are only 2 things shorter than this....and one is my memory!

Just Before Dawn (Swe) - Who Knows What The Dark Brings [ep], despite having 3 solid full lengths in their existence JBD are not in my favorite list of Swedish death bands although I still like them. This is another solid release, again with a different vocalist on all 3 songs but still, each vocalist is good!

In Demise (Ger) - Conjuring Dystopia [ep], damn is this vocalist good! A little too proggy for my taste but a great listen occasionally!

Desolation (Swe) - Where Darkness Dwells [ep], another solid slab of Swedish death metal, nothing special, nothing exciting just 3 songs at 17:45 and a pretty good listen.

Deiquisitor (Dnk) - Religiously Endorsed Masochism [ep], not a big fan but I liked these guys previous stuff a little but this one is really drab sounding. I don't know if it is the production or just a raw sound but I was hoping for more.

Asperatus (Pol) - Sanctified State Of Decay [ep], Eraserhead (Ger) - Hexenhammer [ep], For The Pyres (Swe) - Hymns Of Deception [demo], Abyssus (Grc) - Relics Of The Past [ep], Engulfed (Tur) - Vengeance Of The Fallen [ep], Cemetery Dwell (Arg) - Cold Visions Of Nether [demo], Demonolith (Rus) - My Name Is Destany [ep], Carnal Tomb (Ger) - Descend [ep], Daeth Daemon (Aut) - The Skeleton Spectre [ep], Damned To Downfall (Swe) - Born To Breed [ep], Dethrone (Swe) - State Of Decay [ep], Dripping Horror (Swe) - Waiting For The Drip [demo], Living Gate (Bel) - Deathlust [ep], Tombstoner (US) - Descent To Madness [ep]

Here are bands that I have loved in the past and have been favorites of mine with previous releases but for some reason, I can't get into these new ones. Hopefully I can give them some listens in the future.

Human Carnage (Esp) - Ancient Covenant Of Obscenity, Banisher (Pol) - Degrees Of Isolation, Abysmal Dawn (US) - Phylogenesis, Disavowed (Hol) - Revocation Of The Fallen, Abramelin (Aus) - Never Enough Stuff, Dira Mortis (Pol) - Ancient Breath Of Forgotten Misanthropy, Conquest Icon (Pol) - Empire Of The Worm, Hypnos (Cze) - The Blackcrow, Cytotoxin (Ger) - Nuklearth, Defeated Sanity (Ger) - The Sanguinary Impetus, Deeds Of Flesh (US) - Nucleus, Humanity Delete (Swe) - No One Survives This Game, Fractured Insanity (Bel) - Massive Human Failure, Scordatura (UK) - Mass Failure, Napalm Death (UK) - Throes Of Joy, Incantation (US) - Sect Of Vile Divinities, Eciton (Dnk) - Suspension Of Disbelief, Trauma (Pol) - Ominous Black
