Radio : EXD 1280 - Sunday December 3, 2023

An unusual start for Equalizing-X-Distort, with two tributes (Shane McGowan - Pogues) and Geordie Walker (Killing Joke) but that leads to an oldies set with some new archival releases to showcase. We also feature a piece on the When words fail music speaks benefit for Ukraine coming up in two weeks time. There is a feature on Pacific Northwest power violence. There is a preview of the Side by Side reunion happening in Brooklyn. And two sets of new releases.

She put me in touch with Krista Pettipas who is organizing the event and I put together this feature to help dig into the significance of it. We’re going to start off with a conversation between Krista and I.

Interview with Sarde about Death and their film screening at Hot Docs.
DEATH - Rock 'n' Roll Victim

Discharge feature
Last week we started off with Discharge. A band from Stoke-on-Trent with a huge impact on the punk scene. And it’s interesting because they wrote lyrics that resembled haikus. Which demonstrates that it is not how much you say, but more how you say it. And they were responsible for an archetypal sound known as D-Beat which would go on to influence sub genres of hardcore like kang in Sweden and Burning Spirits in Japan. I thought we could spend some time appreciating just DISCHARGE.

DISCHARGE - No Future
DISCHARGE - Pause 1979
DISCHARGE - Realities of War
DISCHARGE - Why
DISCHARGE - Hear Nothing See Nothing Say Nothing
DISCHARGE - Warning
