Radio - Sunday October 14th, 2012

Tonight's show started out with a Top 10 for underground releases for the month of September. A set of creepy garage like material followed with the Cramps making an appearance. An old school hardcore set followed with new songs by bands like DOA with Jello Biafra on vocals, singing about the occupy movement. That was followed by some first wave punk bands like Tyranna and Crash Kills Five. A straight edge set followed that with some Canadian east coast bands making it into the set like Envision and Risky Business. That was followed by a set of olod school inspired hardcore bands like Tzn-Xenna from Poland. And we finished up with a demo feature by a band called Koszmar who are from Vancouver but sing in Polish. They will be in Montreal in two weeks time so this is like an audio sneak preview. Their demo is on bandcamp.

Double Negative “Outstanding Achievements in the Fields of Excellence” ep

This is another outstanding barrage of noise and complicated parts driven hardcore. I hate to continue to say it but they totally remind me of “Eye for An Eye” era C.O.C. There hardcore is very impact driven and complicated with it’s twists and turns, but not so complicated that you can’t enjoy it. Not like DILLENGER ESACPE PLAN. More like early C.O.C. And Kevin still sounds like an early Blaine Cook more like when he was in the FARTZ. All the right things about hardcore before it was ruined by crossover. And if three great ragers wasn’t enough the punch out spray paint stencil that the cover becomes is ingenious. In an interview I did with them Scott talked about wanting to make a logo that could be spray painted easily on walls kind of like the FUCKED UP logo. Well this packaging is an attempt to make that easier. This issue came out in September 2008 and featured Urinary Tract Infection. I also got to speak to Cleave Anderson about his punk past with the Battered Wives and Tyranna and present with the Screwed. The Corporation talked to us about their blend of Op Ivy meets Dead Kennedys approach to ska-core. And an old Bob Burns and the Breakups interview gets published. Double Negative are from Raleigh, North Carolina and played at the "Hidden World" fest in Toronto. We were able to get them to record a session at CIUT where they talked to us about the amazing house show scene in Raleigh. I soon clued in that the infamous cartoonist Brian Walsby played drums and that each of these musicians had a deep past in the punk scene in Raleigh. MRR Scene Report - Toronto, June 1986

Steve Beaumont does his first Toronto scene report for MRR. Steve wrote about a couple of shows at the Starwood. Some local bands that get mentioned include Social Suicide, Hype, Problem Children. Steve also refers to some touring bands like Death Sentence and S.C.U.M. Steve also mentions the releases of the first Sudden Impact LP, the Living Proof LP, the Problem Children LP, the Sons of Ishmael ep, and the Negative Gain LP.
