Tonight's show started out with the piecing together of the studio 3 session of Skunx. Skunx are a local oi trio that reminds me a lot of Blitz in terms of guitar sound. The singer sings in English, Portuguese as in the Dose Brutal cover and Spanish in their new song "Delincuente Adolescente", which is great to hear. Below is the how we heard the interview and session mixed together also including a couple of songs on their bandcamp page.

SKUNX - Interview (CIUT)
SKUNX - Riot (Oi! the Nische)

Gio, the singer from Skunx, is a fan of futebol and music from South America. Given that Argentina played in the final, the first two bands are from the country tha is the runner up in the tournament. But this set also has bands from the host country (Brazil) and some bands from other countries in the tournament (Uruguay) and Venezualan.

COMANDO SUICIDA - Y ya o ve (Pure Impact / Crowbar)
ALERTA ROJA - Situacion Limite (Pinhead)
DOSE BRUTAL - Vadia (Radykaos)

LA SEGURIDAD NACIONAL - Oi Tudo (ST2 Music)
OHLO SECO - Nada (ST2 Music)

The last two bands appear come from the audio for a documentary titled "Botinada - The origin of Punk in Brazil. Gio shared a link to an upload of the documentary with some English subtitles.

We had a set for Germany, but we ran out of time but the recent Stage Bottles single represented the international spirit of the tournament. Urban Blight covered Upright Citizens in Studio 3 so here it is again. Beav was just in town this weekend.

STAGE BOTTLES - One World One Crew
URBAN BLIGHT - Bombs of Peace (CIUT)

Tonight's demo feature is a band from France that I read about in the June issue of MRR. In the Skunx interview Gio tolsd a story about the Hired Goons likening the Skunx sound to French oi. We just happened to read about a new french oi band so we thought it dovetailed the show nicely. Here is a review from the June issue of MRR. The demo can be downloaded at http://syndrome81.bandcamp.com/.

Skunx studio 3 session

The last studio 3 session we had a tornado touch down. Today we had two crazy rain storms. Must be something about recording punk bands in our broadcast studio that brings out the worst in the weather.

Skunx were scheduled for the end of July, but Ian and Aldo will be away and the Delinquents want to wait til their recording is ready for release. Bennett informed me that Gio was planning on moving back home and that the Skunx were probably going to disband and that this was going to happen next month so we really wanted to get them into the studio. They agreed to fill in at the last minute.

Israel was the first one at Hart House. He is really into rockabilly and he told me about how he had a rockabilly band that Gio played in. In exchange Gio played bass in Skunx. It's a symbiotic relationship.

The session started late because Bennett had to get everything from the rehearsal space to the station which is the basement of Israel's girlfriend's rockabilly clothing shop. It's a pretty rad shop. We checked it out after the interview. Our time was also eaten up by trying to sift through the equipment thrown into the room after the rush to get the remote broadcast equipment into the equipment studio. Ian was able to find some effects and compressors, which was what Gio was looking for to get an echo effect on his vocals. By the time we had the sound we had to rip through a set which included the following songs:

1. Dose Brutal (which is a cover by a band of the same name)
2. Destiny
3. Law and Order
4. Chaos
5. Public Disgrace
6. No Future
7. Youth
8. Terrorist Attack
9. Delincuente Adolescente
10. Riot

I also got them to do some IDs

1. Riot ID
2. Youth ID
3. No Future ID

We interviewed the band about their releases and shows and the songs recorded tonight.

Aldo of Punks and Rockers filmed the session with a bum leg.

Radio - Sunday, May 18th, 2014

NASH THE SLASH passed away last week. I found out about his passing in an editorial piece on Q. Here and Now also did a look back at Nash following it with the FM hit 'Phasors on Stun'. That was a song I knew very well having heard it many times on FM Radio. It was also a song that took me back to summer camp. A counsellor there had turned me onto FM. I would soon find out about NASH THE SLASH on after school video shows with the video for "Dead Man's Curve" and "Dopes on the Water". I went to the first Police Picnic where NASH THE SLASH unceremoniously had the plug pulled on him. The only Canadian act to get yanked from the stage in some Gong show fashion like he was some kind of a novelty act, which he was sort of. A mummy impersonator in top hat and white tails that played the electric violin and a few other instruments that includes a glockenspiel. But he was more than that. He was a guy who inspired Gary Numan, one of the first to start an independent label known as Cut Throat records and who sued Pepsi and won. I got to meet NASH THE SLASH on the air once. Jonzo from Mods 'n Rockers arranged for him to come in and we did a full on interview. It was an honour to meet this pioneer of the Toronto punk scene. I learned of his soundscaping to silent films like Nosferatu at places like the Roxy Theatre. He was doing a regular Halloween gig at a club on Yonge Street. Someone posted up a flyer for a Valentine's week massacre set of shows at the Edge. He was into gimmicks but there is no denying that he was a groundbreaker when it comes to punk in this city.  So we started off the show with some NASH THE SLASH material mixed together.

So this will bee the second time this summer that a band has made it athough way out from PEI. That seems crazy to me given I have never seen a band from PEI before. Uncle are reportedly a power violence band and they have a bandcamp page at http://uncle902.bandcamp.com/.

IDNS will be playing with their new drummer Daren who also moonlights in Make No Gains.

And Skunx have a demo out called "Public Disgrace".
