Interview with Brigitta Davidjants (Stephen)
Brigitta is a long time journalist and researcher at the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre. Brigitta's primary focus has been on Estonian pop. Brigitta wrote a book for a Bloomsbury series known as 33-1/3 which are short books about popular music. Brigitta chose to write about J.M.K.E.'s first album Külmale Maale which means “To the Cold Land”. Brigitta explains who J.M.K.E. are and why they are so important. A clue is that they helped kickstart the national awakening movement which lead to a bloodless revolution. Pretty great stuff for a punk band.

Here is a download for the interview with Brigitta

J.M.K.E. - Nad ei mu Nime (Stupido Twins / Georg Scherer Systems)

A transcript of this interview has just been published in an English language Estonian newspaper called Eesti Elu. Thanks to Andres Kasekamp and Vincent Teetsov for making this happen.

Demo Feature
This band is from Montreal and features members of Beton Arme and Puffer. They take their name from “Le Sleen de Paris” a collection of poetry where Spleen translates to “melancholy”. Appropriate as the band takes influences from the 90s mod revival, like Brian Jonestown Massacre, some Krautrock influence and I hear Revolution Summer DC. This is the bands 2nd demo and it is released on Roachleg.

SPLEEN - Insoutenable (Roachleg)

Radio - Sunday, June 28th, 2020

Tonight's show starts out with a Cro Mags cover re-tooled for COVID-19. We want to those who donated to CIUT. At the time of taping that included Justin, Shawna, Jamie, Steve, Mary, Vince, Jamie, Lisa, Dave, JDM, and John. Since then a few more have gone on and let us know and you can too at www.ciut.fm. We are just over 60% of the way there. Tonight’s demo is a new band formed out of isolation in Southern Ontario called “Questionable Gentlemen. A Fascinating project band featuring 14 songs and 7 singers and they are donating money raised from the sales of this recording to the station. Please see the link below. You can download the show here.

2 MINUTE MINOR - Hard Times (Zap)

Up Next is a brand new archival release of the first punk band from Bulgaria called the NEW FLOWERS. This release is called “Cold War Collection” and compiles material recorded by the band between 1979 and 1995. Puke ‘n Vomit is the label that did all the hard work.

НОВИ ЦВЕТЯ (NOVY TSVETYA) - Revolting Grief (Гнусната Печал) (Puke 'n Vomit)
LARRY WILLIS - Police Car (Stiff)
BIZARROS - Nova (Gorilla / Clone)
STINKY TOYS - Plastic Faces (Polydor)
CHILD MOLESTERS - I'm Gonna Punch You (Ace and Duce / Negative Jazz)

The CHILD MOLESTERS best known for the song “Hillside Strangler”, have a collection called “Hound Dog Recordings and we heard a song from that called “I’m Gonna Punk You (in the Face). We started off with NEW FLOWERS from Bulgaria and we heard the song “Revolting grief” Again the first punk band from Bulgaria released on Puke n’ Vomit Records. After that we heard “Police Car” by Larry Willis. This song originally appeared as an ep from 1977 and a live version came out on a Stiff compilation a year later. The BIZARROS were next with a recording from 1976 called “Lady Doubounette”. The BIZARROS were from Akron along with so many other bands and they had a STOOGES and Velvet Underground feel to their sound. We heard a song called “Nova”. That was followed up by the STINKY TOYS from Paris and we heard the song “Plastic Faces”. It was released on a self titled LP in 1977. Up next is a Peel Sessions recording of "Nobody's Hero" by Stiff Little Fingers.

STIFF LITTLE FINGERS - Nobody’s Hero (Strange Fruit)
FLYS - Fun City (EMI)
HOT WATER MUSIC - True Believers (Shouting Street Audio)
MARK SULTAN - Heart Attack (Slovenly)
THE LAISSEZ FAIRES - Lillie May (Rum Bar)

Jose programs punk bands that song on Spanish. Misera Existencia is out of Chile.

MISERA EXISTENCIA is a band from Concepcion Chile. They released this album called "Asquerosa Condicion Humana" last year. This opening track is called "Ambicion". NAMATAY SA INGAY is a band from New York City. They just released a new album called "And Talim Ng Galt". This new release money is being raised for the "Federation of Mutual Aid for the Poor". They were scheduled to play next month.
DEMONIOS CHUEKOS is a band from Mexico City who released this ep on Grabaciones Pinche Engendro. SUPERDEAF are a new band from New York. Javier the bass player just sent me this today he also plays in another band called Necrotic Society who were also scheduled to play next month in Toronto. Lastly, SKUMRISE are a band from Germany. The drummer is a Spanish speaking person and he sang this song called "Hipocrita".

WARWOUND - The Age of the Racist (Sanctus Propaganda)
GREY C.E.L.L. – Wreck (King of the Monsters)
REEK MINDS - End of the Trail (Edger)

That was Reek Minds from Portland was a song called “End of the Trail” off a self titled ep. Reminds me a lot of NO COMMENT. We started out with a band from Russia called TERMINAL ADDICTION and we heard a song called “The Rope” off a cassette that just came out. That’s a scorcher. REGIMEN DE TERROR with the title track off an EP released by La Vida es Un Mus. A more rudimentary DISCHARGE flavour. Brand new. WARWOUND are a reformed band from Birmingham that started out originally in 1982. THe re-boot started back five years ago with Ian Glasper on bass. He has written all these wonderful books on decades of punk in the UK. This is a song called “The Age of the Racist” and is off a new release called “WWWIII”. That was followed up by another new band with deep roots. The band is called Grey C.E.L.L. and they feature members of Citizens Arrest. One of my all time favourite hardcore bands out of NYC. They are now based on Philly and the song we heard was called “Wreck”.

KIRJE KELALTA - Vapaa -Karanteeni (Self-Released)
REGRET - Prepare For A Fall (Urinal Vinyl / Pumpkin / Never Fall into Silence / Svoboda)
MAAFA - Not Your Exotic (Self-Released)

AARMA from Brazil was next with Control Da Massas. They released this album called "Dogmas" earlier this month. I found Cliterarti recently and I just had to play it cuz is sick. This was released on Tankcrimes last year, and is another of the few trans- hardcore punk bands, there should be more like this. The singer Ami Lawless recorded a live studio 3 session with Voetsek in the old CIUT studios on St. George Street. KIRJE KELALTA from Finland were next with "Vapaa Karantenit". This was released earlier this month. Regret from Bristol were next with "Prepare for a fall". And last we heard another band i discovered recently this is actually a solo project by the Afro-Brazilian Bassist, Songwriter and Vocalist, Flora Lucini. A 6- piece electric band with percussion, taking traditional styles of Hardcore-punk and mixing them with Rhythms of the African Diaspora. Flora describes her music as:
"Afro-Progressive Hardcore".

Radio - Sunday, February 24th, 2019

Tonight's show starts off the latest instalment of LatinoAmerica Resiste. Tonight's focus is on Chile. Jose El Podrido has curated a show that looks at various bands from the beginning to today.

You can hear the show on the player above or download the radio show here

VINCHUCAS - Dejen Respirar - Demo Tape (Not On Label) 1983 Santiago

This band changed their name to Los Prisioneros and became one of the most famous Chilean "rock" bands. They also changed their style from a band heavily influenced by the Clash and the 80's new wave and synth pop.

PINOCHET BOYS - Pinochet Boys ( Self Released) 1984
Pinochet Boys are another band that are considered the first punk band in Chile although like the rest of the bands in this first part of the show don't actually sound a lot like punk but more in the new wave / no wave genre, for some reason i feel like Pinochet Boys is better known internationally and more famous for being the "first Chilean punk band" but the information i found is divided since according to all of the bands and their fans all of them were the first ever punk band in Chile, the only certain thing is that all of this younger individuals were playing music that no one else was playing while the dictatorship was still in full effect and that has a lot of value in my opinion.

VANDALIK - Maldito Espejo - The Unlikely History of the Punk Rock Chile. (Not On Label) 1986, Santiago

DADA - Yo Odio A Los Politicos. (Self Released) 1986 Santiago
Dada never recorded an album but a few of their recordings belong to a live session at a show called Melodias Subterraneas on the University of Santiago. They also played the first punk festival in Chile in 1986 organized by Pinochet Boys, bands like Zapatilla Rota, Niños Mutantes, Indice De Desempleo and Corruption Girls also played at the fest. The band was active for only 2 years and ended up due to the tragic death of the singer nick-named "Rock Star" who suffered from epilepsy.

ORGASMO - (a.k.a. CENSURADO) - (a.k.a. THE SLAM) - Hijo De Puta. (Self Released) 1987? Santiago de Chile
They meet in school and started playing in 1983, apparently they became famous and were constantly playing concerts plus tv shows interviews and they recorded one studio album. The name of the band was constantly censored on tv and radio which lead them to sometimes introduce the band with the name (CENSURADO) or sometimes THE SLAM. They reunited for one show on the 90's and recorded it. There is one more compilation album called "Antropologia" featuring all of their known recorded tracks.

FISKALES AD HOK - Estupidos Policias Mata Ratas Demo (Self Released) 1987 Santiago.
Fiskales Ad Hok started playing in 1986 but didn't released any official album until 1993. This song comes from their 1987 demo titled "Mata Ratas". They are also considered one of the first and long standing punk bands in chile since they are still active and playing.

POLITICOS MUERTOS - Burocratas Corruptos - Politicos Muertos (CFA Corporacion Fonografica Autonoma) 1997 Santiago.
This is from"Politicos Muertos" their first and only studio album, and although it was released in 1997, but featured recordings from 1987 through to 1995.

They wrote this song to ivan moreira a 90's senator in chile which among other things became famous for his support to Augusto Pinochet he even did a hunger strike in support of the dictator while he was detained in london. A piece of shit war criminal supporter none the less. Curasbun toured a couple of times in Canada in 2016 and 2017 playing toronto at the hard luck the first time and coalition the second one.
