Tonight on EXD another unearthed demo from around these parts (Barrie) by B.S.L. Recorded in 1988 the second demo never really saw much circulation as the band was breaking up. They would go on to become Phallocracy and more recently the Groogies, but this unreleased demo shows the band’s roots of speed (a la HERESY / LARM / MDC). We will also be featuring some dep cuts from the Britain’s Burning comp. New international releases from Morocco (TAQBIR), Indonesia (ZAGOBART), Singapore (SIAL), and Chile (LUZ DE GAS). Demo Feature
BSL were a band from Barrie back in 1986-1988. The three letter acronym was adaptable and the band had made a few stickers to suggest what the three letters could stand for. Boys from Scuttlebutt Lodge was the one that I have heard repeated back to me fairly often. They recorded a second demo in 1988 that really didn’t get much fan fare but three songs from their first demo made it to a compilation that I put out in 1988 called “Ontario: Yours to Discover”. We’re going to hear the eight song demo tonight.

This demo came out at the beginning of the pandemic and got overlooked as a result of everyone trying to figure out self-isolation. This is the second issue of No Peace Without Freedom and I remember I couldn't believe how thick it was. A whopping 60 pages. The interviews in this second issue include Sons of Ishmael, Desecration, BSL, Nothing in Particular, Straw Dogs. Guilt Parade, Maggot Sandwich, Mad Parade, World Full of Hope zine, Doggy Style, Life Sentence, Dead Milkmen, Flecks of Drool, PCI, Black Donnellys, Government Issue, Half Off, Crib Death, and Another Destructive System. There was articles on the Better Youth Organization, the No More Censorship Defense Fund, and Speciesism. plus loads of local record and zine reviews.

Zine - Photo Drome #2

 This is a photozine compiled by Rita Laberto. When Photo Drome came out it reminded me of “Welcome to Cruise Country” which was a photo zine that MRR did at the time. The theme of “Cruise Country” was to capture photos of the European bands. There was lots of attention on the North American bands, but MRR wanted to demonstrate the greatness of activity in other countries. Most photozines were limited to their local scene. That was what was easiest for photographers. Shoot pictures of local bands and the bands that came through town. This was the second issue for Photo Drome and I think Rita had made contacts from the first issue with photographers from around the world. Issue 2 got to incorporate photos from some scenes in Europe.  So although there were pictures of bands from Toronto which included D.O.G., M.S.I., BSL, the Nunfuckers, and Missing Link there were photos of bands that had played in Toronto like Life Sentence from Chicago, Hyper as Hell from Ohio, Pillsbury Hardcore from Pomona, SNFU from Edmonton. There were also international bands in this zine. Larm from Holland, Indigesti from Italy, the Skeezicks from Germany, Heresy from England. The list goes on and it is an impressive one. It was impressive to us back then because these were bands we had only read about. Photo Drome  was a window to the international hardcore scene. Photo Drome made us feel like we had something special in our scene. The zine was professionally printed with colour on the cover which was rare back then for underground zines. And Photo Drome was bound so pages didn’t come apart from the staples not holding. It was just an all round awesome hardcore scrapbook. Pillsbury Hardcore were from Pomona, California and featured Bob Durkee of Fartblossom Records. The others guys in the band would become Pissed Happy Children, who would come to develop the power violence sound.

Zine - Breach of Discipline #1

This is their first issue and it is impressive in that there are a lot of local bands. The interviews are brief, but they get down to the basics which were often missed in a lot of interviews. The cover says it all.
