Tonight we are celebrating 50 Years of CanCon and it’s influence on punk. On January 18th, 1971, Canadian Content became a part of the Broadcast Act and was implemented through minimum percentages of hourly Canadian airplay. You might have heard us use the term Can Con. It is a short form for Canadian Content. Like other countries in the world Canada became concerned about championing our own culture. In the 60s radio airplay was dominated by British and American acts. So on January 18th, 1971, Canadian Content requirements were added to the Broadcast Act. Radio stations were required to program somewhere between 25% which has now been increased to 40% of programming by Canadian artists. In Scandinavian countries their content requirements are higher to help preserve their culture with good success. And the same is true here. You can download this show here.

Tonight's show features a long form interview with the Reaction. The Reaction were from St. John's, Newfoundland with punk energy and mod sensibility. Technically the second punk band from the rock but a band the first band that took being a punk band seriously touring the island and later the mainland. The story starts with Mike Fisher seeing the Viletones, the Poles and BB Gabor among others when he had moved to Toronto. He went back to St. John's and started the Reaction. The Reaction would record many times initially above a record shop called Echo Music. They were able to release a single while still around called "On the Beach" on their own Neutron Records label. Recently Supreme Echo, released a single called "East End Rockers" which collects songs from each of the band's studio sessions and that's where we start this interview, with an explanation of the single's title.

This interview was conducted in December with Mike Fisher (over the phone), the singer and bassist and Terry Carter, their original drummer. Terry was also a founding member for Da Slyme so we talk about them and we also cover places to play in the early St. John's scene. Terry is a sound engineer here at the station but I only found out that after the interview was over. It is kind of crazy the caliber of people involved in this station. Terry was blowing me away with his musical knowledge in the interview.

This was the last of the re-issue series by Frank Manley. As the other two did, this featured long lost punk singles released in their entirety. The songs found on this collection are:

Da Slyme Double LP

Da Slyme were from St. John’s, Newfoundland and were Newfoundland's first punk rock band. They formed in 1977 and cut this album 3 years later, although some of the recordings were from 1978. Apparently only 10 copies of this album were distributed outside of Newfoundland. It is not known how many were distributed within Newfoundland, but it is likely that less than 200 were made in total. The album was released in 1980 and was comprised of 2 lp’s (first punk 2lp released in Canada); one studio, one live, as well as extensive DIY style liner notes. After cutting the lp’s, Da Slyme ran out of cash so they went down to the local Salvation Army, bought some cheap albums for 25 cents each, spray painted the covers and housed the albums in a brown paper bag cover. Some of the albums that they spray-painted were Mr Dressup, Pink Floyd, Chris DeBurgh, Carlton Showband, Donna Fargo, The Bell Jubilee Sound, and Kris Kristofferson. The music itself is raw punk, ska, reggae, etc. The songs on the album range from topics such as snot, cocks, zits, shit, beer, and fucking to Ron Pumphrey and Pierre Trudeau. Da Slyme have recently re-released the album on CD and it is available on their website. It’s about $600 cheaper than trying to obtain a copy of this obscenely rare and important historical artifact of Canadian Punk rock history. http://abandonstream.net/slyme/
