Tonight's show was in honour of the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women. To commemorate this day we pulled together a show of women in punk bands and we noticed that there were some strong feminist ideas by punk bands, there was some bands with women in the band, and there were some all women band. This program has two features. The first is the story behind 40th Anniversary of the Clash playing Toronto (The Rex Theatre on February 20th, 1978). The anniversary is being marked by a photo exhibit on Friday (February 1st) at the Pape Library. The exhibit is curated by the White Brothers (Nick and Simon) and will run on the 2nd floor of the Library for the month of February. 

The second part of the show was a tribute to all the people who passed away in 2018. We didn't get to everybody but we did get to way more than we had on the show this past year.

Nick has just put out a new book about his time in London with the Rent Boys Inc. and the Dave Howard Singers titled "What You Don't Want is What You Don't Get". I have been digging the diary like book that includes multiple sources of letters to home and reviews to help tell the story. The B-GIRLs are a super important part of Toronto’s punk history. They were the first all girl band from Toronto, they remained independent keeping their own values with some rules that countered the sexist practices within the music scene at the time, and they wrote some of the best hits that came out of this scene. They were one of the first bands to leave Toronto and make it in New York. They toured with the CLASH. They got released on a label outside of Toronto (Bomp). At the end of 2017, the B-GIRLS released their old material on an LP called “Bad Not Evil” and they played a show in Toronto. We got to speak with Lucasta Ross and Cynthia Ross (not related although that is debatable) when the B-Girls played last year. This is part 1 of the interview we did back in December. There is a great interview in the March 2018 issue of MRR about ISS, who are from North Carolina. Daniel from Sorry State is releasing an ep by them and took the time to get into their heads about their cut and paste approach of making music with a sampler. Using hip hop approaches to song making the band has applied this to punk and as a result you get song titles that sound like in-jokes. It’s a new application of song writing methodology and a cassette has been released called “Endless Pussyfooting” so we featured this on tonight’s show. Mary Tyler Moore passed away this past week. Although she’s not a punk she did represent a modern independent woman in the work world. The show took place in Minneapolis and Husker Du covered the theme song on their “Makes No Sense At All” ep in the mid-80’s. The song was like an unofficial anthem for Minneapolis, which is why it was so appropriate for a band from them to cover the song. With all the tributes to Mary Tyler Moore this week I found myself thinking about this cover.

This coming Sunday at the Garrison is a benefit for Freddie Pompeii, a guy we are trying to keep alive. Freddie has been diagnosed with cancer and we all know that medical bills are more expensive in the States. Tonight's show featured Colin Brunton and Kire Paputts who are about to theatrically release their new film "The Last Pogo Jumps Again". The new film fills in the back story to the original film, The Last Pogo and tells in a more a comprehensive manner some of the stories stories of the early Toronto punk scene. Treat Me Like Dirt should be required reading before seeing this film, but you will still get a lot out of the film. The film will be screening at Toronto's oldest cinema, the Big Picture (1035 Gerard Street), on Friday November 1st for a week. Colin and Kire re-live the experience of putting the film together and tell us some of the stories behind this labour of love. Upon seeing the film in the theatre my reaction was this is a complete telling of the Toronto punk scene, this is an accurate telling as it captures some of the hard stories to tell and damn is there a lot of great music from this city. The demo feature is a new band from Montreal featuring members of TRUNCHEONS and INEPSY. The vocals have that Lemmy feel to them but the guitar work reminds me of the ringing guitar work found in INFA RIOT and UNRULED. The Groggies, from Barrie / Orillia, recorded a session this past Tuesday which had a song called "Pull the Trigger" foretelling the incident that happened in New Town, Connecticut. Don't read more into the song other then punk bands seem to know more about the crummier side of life.

Demo Feature
The Kidz were a punk band around between 1979 ad 1980 in the Campbelford / Peterborough area. They would play a few shows in the area mostly at a place called the Playpen. Sabastion Bach from Skid Row was from Peterborough and would go to shows there. The Kidz could probably be considered the first punk band from the area writing originals. This is a basement recording re-created last year by Joel Wasson and the guitar player re-creating it. So although this doesn't represent an original recording it gives us an idea of the punk material from the time. This is the band that would develop into Creative Zero.
