Radio : EXD 1247 - Sunday, April 16, 2023

On this episode of Equalizing-X-Distort – a feature interview with some of the authors of a new book on Anti Racist Action called We Go Where They Go. We speak with Kristin Schwartz and Shannon Clay about ARA’s origin story. We focused on the Toronto chapter and how they took on various racist organization’s in the city which led to stories of shady autocrats and an attempt to turn a Caribbean island into a drug state to finance these racist countries a la Iran-Contra style. We talk about how resourceful ARA became as a grassroots organization. We talked about ARA’s legacy. All this in anticipation for their book launch on Thursday (April 20th). And there are a lot of anti-racist punk anthems mixed in with the interview.

But we are going to start things off with a tribute to Frederick Nathanial Hibbert, better known as Toots Hibbert, singer for Toots and the Maytals. “Toots” passed away last Saturday which is a week ago from air time but only a few days when we started producing this show. And tributes galore have been aired on radio shows for this soulful ball of energy of a singer that started out in the ska era and coined the next incarnation with his song “Do the Reggae”. Why are we eulogizing a reggae artist on a Punk show? Because Toots had an impact on the early punk artists like the Clash. I got to see Toots at the Concert Hall and it was insane as the 60 year old he jumped from start to finish in rude boy style. And he was still performing at the time of his sudden illness. I am going to start out with a song that everyone has been playing. This is Pressure Drop as covered by the Clash on “Black Market Clash”.

Zine - EXD, VOLUME 1, ISSUE 2

This was the second issue and came out in November 2001. This issue featured an interview with Scare Tactic who were a band with a short life span. They totally had an early New York sound and featured Jesse who would go on to be one of Career Suicide's drummers and Jonah who would be Career Suicide's guitarist and Fucked Up's drummer. Scare Tactic was the genesis of it all. Theren was also a feature on the Saucy 70's film fest which was a one of film fest put together by Conflict Archives and was paying homage to some of the B movies of the 70's with a sex theme.

As One "No Less an Authority" CD

As One was a four piece from the west end of downtown Toronto. The band featured Jesse Parker on vocals, his younger brother Robert who played bass, and James Morten who played drums. The band was originally called BSE. BSE were originally a pop punk type of band. Jonah joined after they played a set at their high school which consisted of punk covers. They started listening to bands like Warzone, Strife, and Hatebreed and changed their name to As One.

The band started in late 1998 and the CD came out around then. The CD was titled “No Less an Authority” and the songs on the CD were:

1. Tolerance not indulgence
2. It’s Time
3. Caught in the crosshairs
4. United worldwide (Warzone)

As One were 3/4s straight edge but they didn’t promote that.

As One recorded a second time in the Winter of 1999 which initially was put out as a demo titled “So What if I’m a Fucking demo”. This demo was put out as the Scare Tactic 7” that came out on Solomon Method Records. So the band changed their name once again.
