Radio - Sunday, January 29th, 2017

Mary Tyler Moore passed away this past week. Although she’s not a punk she did represent a modern independent woman in the work world. The show took place in Minneapolis and Husker Du covered the theme song on their “Makes No Sense At All” ep in the mid-80’s. The song was like an unofficial anthem for Minneapolis, which is why it was so appropriate for a band from them to cover the song. With all the tributes to Mary Tyler Moore this week I found myself thinking about this cover.

HUSKER DU - Love is All Around (SST)

This coming Sunday at the Garrison is a benefit for Freddie Pompeii, a guy we are trying to keep alive. Freddie has been diagnosed with cancer and we all know that medical bills are more expensive in the States. So a bunch of his friends who make up the first wave of the Toronto punk scene are getting together to play a show and we are going to start off with a few of them, starting off with Freddie’s first punk band the VILETONES. This is “Danger Boy”.

THE CURSE- Somethin' Ya Can't Tell Your Mother (Other Perople’s Music)

In fundraising tradition we start off by playing name that tune with DJ Brown from the Prophesy as he used to be a ska DJ prior to becoming a junglist. We look for a ska like cover done by a hardcore or punk band. We chose a recent cover of the Slickers done by DOA. Please donate to CIUT at www.ciut.fm. You can download a copy of the show here

DOA – Johnny Too Bad (Sudden Death)

SHEXD is one of the most popular segments on the show, so we start out by paying tribute to the multiple nuggets of programming they are involved in that have spun off into other things on the show and for that we are grateful. The CURSE because Mickey Skin showed up for the first ever SHEXD, STRANGLED because Zoe tipped us off to this new band from Edmonton, and OUTCRY because the singer was involved in the most recent instalment of SHEXD. That is a small list of contributions. Check out the –SHEXD tag for more of Chloe, Zoe, Sarde, and Marji’s contributions because they are many

THE CURSE - Shoeshine Boy (Hi Fi)
STRANGLED - White Noise (Crude City)

We often pull together sets of bands love for radio. Here is a set that expresses pun band’s thought on radio starting off with

THE STOOGES – 1969
THE JOLTS – Radio man
THE UGLY – Hell Time (Other Peoples Music)

Last week we played a new band from Vancouver called VILEINS featuring Shawn Lovblom, who used to sing in the Reprobates. We don’t often get listener feedback so I thought I would share what he wrote. “Thanks for the airtime, I'm loving the soviet theme you've been doing, I've been really getting into a Russian band called Knho, with Victor Tsoi. not exactly hard stuff but I do like it. Anyways, I'm stuck working many hours for a couple more weeks, then I can catch up on all the good programming from you. Thanks for all you do.” That was nice to hear.

Also last week we heard from a Jose who did translation for us with Arrabio and Adictox from Cuba and is also a listener of the show. He wrote to thank us for the feature we did on Colombia. He started messaging with the singer from Secta Suicida who knew the bands and said it was a solid playlist. Then he heard his band being played, which is one of those once in a lifetime moments. We learned of a number of partnerships going on between Montreal and Colombia like Malokio just getting back from touring there and Parasites heading down and doing a slit release with Secta Suicida. These partnerships seem unique to the punk scene. Jose is originally from Mexico and he agreed to put together a show on Mexico, which we have started planning. That will air in the next few months. The research has begun. In the meantime here are a few early punk bands from Mexico

DANGEROUS RHYTHM - The Bar (Orfeon Videovox)

REBEL’D PUNK - Mi Nueva Nación (Discos Cobra)

ARTIFICIAL DISSEMINATION – GMO (CIUT)
KATATONIX – Rip Off (CIUT)

Vince was in on July 10th, 2013 with Make No Gains and more recently with the Katatonix on March 15th, 2016. Vince also talked about what being on CIUT has meant for getting connected with the scene. We played a yet to be aired song b the Katatonix.

Tonight's show featured Colin Brunton and Kire Paputts who are about to theatrically release their new film "The Last Pogo Jumps Again". The new film fills in the back story to the original film, The Last Pogo and tells in a more a comprehensive manner some of the stories stories of the early Toronto punk scene. Treat Me Like Dirt should be required reading before seeing this film, but you will still get a lot out of the film. The film will be screening at Toronto's oldest cinema, the Big Picture (1035 Gerard Street), on Friday November 1st for a week. Colin and Kire re-live the experience of putting the film together and tell us some of the stories behind this labour of love. Upon seeing the film in the theatre my reaction was this is a complete telling of the Toronto punk scene, this is an accurate telling as it captures some of the hard stories to tell and damn is there a lot of great music from this city. You should see it and you can hear the interview above or download an MP3 file here.

Radio - Sunday. January 7th, 2013

This show was inspired by a feature in a weekly entertainment magazine known as Now. This past week they did a feature on the Best 50 albums by Torontonians. They had a punk singles list which made very little sense given the enormity of the period and the nubre of bands that have put out great things so we did our own list based on Generations of punk. Sam Sutherland is a writer for Exclaim Magazine that initially started writing a book on Canadian punk back in 2006 when he was studying journalism at Ryerson University. Since then he has travelled across the country tracing down the participants who were around back in the late 70's to talk to him about this cultural explosion known as punk that took place in every major city across Canada. Sam connects the dots between punk and loads of major cultural developments in this country. The radio interview is too long and cuts off but you can listen to it with all the background music. Or you can listen to parts 1 and parts 2 without the distractions.
