Brian passed away on Leap Day. All the eulogizing is making me think he was a great guy when he wasn’t. I strongly recommend the book “On the Take” by Stevie Cameron. The book documents crime corruption and greed in government during the Mulroney Years. He visited York University and the students pelted him with dried pasta chanting “We’re Tired, We’re Boney, We’re eating macaroni”. He sold us out to the Americans and screwed this country over. This week's show was a reaction to the execution of Sammy Yatim on the TTC at the hands of the police. We programmed a two hour show which explores the relationship between punks and cops. Genetic Control were a hardcore band from Montreal around between 1983 and 1985. They were one of Canada's best hardcore bands which is evidenced in how sought after the "First Impressions" single is today. Many tributes have been paid to the band one of which was the bootlegged dedication record to Tim Yohannon which contained the song "Love Rat" by the band. In fact I think one of the reason's why "Primitive Air Raid" is so good is because of their song "Suburban Life" which in my opinion is the best song on the compilation. The band is now scattered across the country, but every few years they get together to play amd for some big name people. They opened for Flag at this year's NXNE and I was able to speak to the two Robs who play guitar and Doug-O on bass (Saturday June 15th). We spoke about their songs, their recordings, the sows they played, the bands they played with, the scene and their beloved practise space known as the Bleury Beach Club or the BBC for short. The interview was long and thanks to Eric Betlam for cleaning up the audio quality and spending a couple of hours with me cutting it down so that we could fit in the openng song "1984" and some brief underlying recordings by the band. This band deserves a re-issue and maybe a collected discography but here is a bit of their story.

This show is a feature on Creative Zero, who were a hardcore band that existed from 1981 - 1984. The band was originally from Peterborough and they moved to Toronto and got involved in our local scene. They did a 15 song recording in 1984 with Brian Taylor at Accusonic that sounds as great as anything on the "T.O. Hardcore" comp. Guitarist, James Zero and drummer Joel Wasson came in and spoke about the band, the time, and the recording. There was lots of perspective on this heyday period of the Toronto hardcore scene.

Zine Archive - Rear Garde #26

Rear Garde was an enterainment newspaper that was published in Montreal and had it's roots on Concordia's radio station CSRG. By issue 26 it was an independent publication and had a lot of great interviews. This issue featured interviews with the Circle Jerks, S.C.U.M., Razorbacks, Ludwig Von 88, Alex Chilton, Cowboy Junkies, Alternative Inuit, Sudden Impact, Vilain Pengouin, Johnny Arse and the Dogs, Adrenalin O.D., 76% Uncertain, and MDC. Sounds like a punk zine. 

Various Artists "Northern Assault" cassette

This is the second issue of this Mississauga zine. This issue starts out with an interview with Steve Goof from BFG. There was an interview with Sons of Ishmael. There is an interview with Don of Reuben Kincade who managed Hype. There is an interview with the singer and drummer from October Crisis. Hype gets interviewed, which makes sense given john was playing guitar in the band at the time. There is an interview with Charlie Brown's Wang who would become Missing Link. One of the few interviews with the amazing Social Suicide from Brantford. There are interviews with Samhain and 7 Seconds when they were through Toronto. There are some explanatory pictures of skateboard tricks and some pictures of Gang Green and SCUM.

This show was put on by a promoter from Montreal who started doing shows in Toronto and Montreal at the same time. SCUM headlined and Neighbourhood Watch from Fredericton also played the show. Social Suicide were from Brantford.

V/A " It Came from the Pit" LP

Psyche Industries followed up the "Primitive Air Raid" comp with a comp that featured bands from across Canada.  Psyche Industry was done by a guy named Randy Boyd who was a guy from Edmonton that re-located to Montreal to start up this label.  This comp was done in the spirit of the "Something to Believe in" comp. Randy approached SNFU about being on the comp when SNFU played a show in Montreal. The Belke Brothers knew Randy Obsure Alternatives, which was a punk record store that Randy had back in Edmonton. When SNFU got back from their tour in the fall of 1985, Chi's roomate David Mockford had just finished a course in sound engineering. His teachers encouraged him to take on this project as a course project which he did. Rather than use material from the next album SNFU decided to cover Warren Zevon's "Poor Pitiful Me". Chris Walter notes that "this was an unusual choice of covers for a punk compilation." SNFU chose the song because they just wanted to have some fun. S.C.U.M. "Born Too Soon" LP

S.C.U.M. stood for Society Controlled Under Murderers. The police in Montreal were known as the C.U.M. (Communaute Urbaine de Montreal) and they had street signs up for them so this was an easy grafitti thing to do was to put S's in front of their acronym. The4 band released "Born Too Soon" on Psyche Industries back in 1985. Sonik's Chicken Shrimp re-released all of SCUM's material on a CD, including the P.E.A.C.E comp song and the 'It came From the Pit" song. The songs on the original album are:
