Tribute to D.B. Hawkes

We haven’t been doing the ska outro so much these days because the shows have been jam packed. But tonight we have the chance to squeeze one in. And it comes on a week when CIUT lost one of our own - D.B. Hawkes. He had two shows on CIUT. His show was so nice they had to play it twice. D.B. did a lot of live sound recordings for the station. He probably has one of the largest collections of live reggae music in the city. I think he also recorded every Afro-fest in the city. Mopa was talking to me about the digital library that the station is trying to develop and he said if D.B.’s collection could become part of that the library would become a substantial archive. I am sorry to have learned about this huge loss to the station and the city of reggae music lovers.

Part two of the Tomorrow is Too Late series is More Stupid Initials, more commonly known as M.S.I. This is a band that was very close to me and by that I mean they were a group of kids that I got to hang out with. They were group of friends in the scene, so they mean a lot to me. But they also played an important part of the Toronto Hardcore scene. They were Toronto's first straight edge band, but they didn't sound like a typical straight edge band. As a result they caught a lot of people off guard. So we try and get at the essence of this band decades later. Tim, Paul, Derek and Glen were in on the interview. John couldn't make it. Zine - Photo Drome #2

 This is a photozine compiled by Rita Laberto. When Photo Drome came out it reminded me of “Welcome to Cruise Country” which was a photo zine that MRR did at the time. The theme of “Cruise Country” was to capture photos of the European bands. There was lots of attention on the North American bands, but MRR wanted to demonstrate the greatness of activity in other countries. Most photozines were limited to their local scene. That was what was easiest for photographers. Shoot pictures of local bands and the bands that came through town. This was the second issue for Photo Drome and I think Rita had made contacts from the first issue with photographers from around the world. Issue 2 got to incorporate photos from some scenes in Europe.  So although there were pictures of bands from Toronto which included D.O.G., M.S.I., BSL, the Nunfuckers, and Missing Link there were photos of bands that had played in Toronto like Life Sentence from Chicago, Hyper as Hell from Ohio, Pillsbury Hardcore from Pomona, SNFU from Edmonton. There were also international bands in this zine. Larm from Holland, Indigesti from Italy, the Skeezicks from Germany, Heresy from England. The list goes on and it is an impressive one. It was impressive to us back then because these were bands we had only read about. Photo Drome  was a window to the international hardcore scene. Photo Drome made us feel like we had something special in our scene. The zine was professionally printed with colour on the cover which was rare back then for underground zines. And Photo Drome was bound so pages didn’t come apart from the staples not holding. It was just an all round awesome hardcore scrapbook. Various Artists "Progress?!" ep

This comp was put together by a group of kids who did a fanzine titled "Still Thinking". The zine was hardcore in focus but also covered issues of a political nature. The group decided to put together a local comp and make it a benefit comp for an organizatin called "Tools for Peace" who worked at bringing in educational aid to Nicaragua, when America waged their secret war against the Sandinistas.



MSI was the first band and they contributed three songs. The first two run into each other. "Choke" was a song that a joke punk band played on an episode of "Quincy" which trashed punks. MSI learned the song and did it as a cover. The song it runs into is an original called "Infection" which is a song about violence. It is a theme as that what "Fighting for Nothing" is about. Death of Gods had a new line up and were recording for a 7" but these songs may have come from their demo. They contributed "Corporate Fuckheads" and "This is God" and their ep had not come out yet. But Scott Williams, their guitar player had just lost his life. He had been killed by a hit and run.

Sons of Ishmael were working on the "Pariah Martyr Demands a Sacrifice" LP. Their page uses some of the artwork that would appear on the cover of that release so this was the next release after "Hayseed Hardcore". It was with a band that was a newer line up than the first ep. The song they do is called "Slow Children Playing" and is a song about the Cold War.

The Nunfuckers were from Kitchener / Waterloo. They had just released the "Dead and on the Floor" ep and "Be Yourself" was on it. It was one of the band's best known songs. They also had a cover of "Purple Haze" played super fast and done long before Snuff did their version.

Guilt Parade had just moved to Toronto from Fredericton. They contributed a cover of Elvis's "Heartbreak Hotel". This was before the LP that was to come out on Fringe.

Death of Gods "A World of One, Divided By All..." ep

Death of Gods (D.O.G.) were a hardcore band from Mississauga. They were inspired by bands from New York City at the time like Agnostic Front, Straight Ahead, Youth of Today, and the like. The band featured terry on vocals, Scott and Tim on guitar, Dave on bass, and Gord on drums. Scott was hit and killed by a car just after this ep was recorded and the band broke up soon after. This record was recorded at Open Sound on May 15 and 16th in 1987. Vladimir who worked on a zine called Still Thinking designed the cover art. The band released this under their own label of Hatebreeder Records. D.O.G. played with bands like MSI, Senile Decay, Negative Gain, Hype and a bunch of others. Songs on here include:

This is one of the first afternoon matinees done as an all ages show at a bar. Straight Ahead were the first of the straight edge revival bands coming out of New york. I am sure they were an influence on Youth of Today, but the mosh beat really comes from Straight Ahead. Sick of it All were also a new band at the time and this might have been prior to their ep on Revelation. Alternative Inuits were from Montreal and were brought in to play the show. And I think Death of Gods were behind putting on this show because they were totally into Straight Ahead and their predecessor NYC Mayhem.

Zine - Still Thinking #2

The second issue of Still Thinking starts out with an interview with Alice from CHUMBAWAMBA (pre-Tub Thumbing days). Alice provides into Chumba`s approach as punks and asks the important question `Where are the women at in the punk scene?"

MALHAVOC are interviewed in their horror metal phase. James talks about influences which includes Flemish painters and industrial music. So this is insight into what the direction they would start going. And at the time they were working on a release with Diabolic force, which never came out. 

DEATH OF GODS were a hardcore band from Mississauga, also known as D.O.G. The band split right when their cassette came out and half the band left to form M.S.I. The group that stayed recruited new members  and would go on to self release an ep. They had a New York hardcore sound at a time when that sound was being carved out by Straight Ahead and Youth of Today. Locals liked them for that. But this interview has them not taking the interview too seriously and you miss the appeal of the band. Nonetheless one of the few interviews they would do before calling it quits. 

There is a scene report from Arizona on the Pheonix scene. The report is written by the drummer of YOUTH UNDER CONTROL. He writes about the bands at the time which included DESECRATION and LAST OPTION. And he writes about some of the zines, but Hippycore, which was the most well known zine to come from Pheonix, was not in that list. Odd because Jack from Desecration was a big part of the zine and Joel would go on to work for Profane Existence. 

ANOTHER DESTRUCTIVE SYSTEM, from L.A., get interviewed. This anarchist band were in the process of releasing a 12" on Mortarhate. They talked about how direct action can work and were advocating for an anti ripoff promotion collective which targeted Goldenvoice. 

DESPERATE MINDS from Kamloops played in Toronto and had just released an ep. Sean, the singer was interviewed and talked about an organizing collective called K.I.D.S. which sounds like it was inspired by B.Y.O. and Positive Force.

There is an interview with an industrial band called VAROSHI FAME. And that was followed by an interview with DARREN COPELAND, a teen from Mississauga who did experimental music. This started reflecting the DIY alternative scenes and the influences of the zine contributors at the time. Even industrial reviews started showing up in the review section. 


One of the only interviews I read with DEAD MILKMEN and one of the funniest. The jokes about the Philly scene are hilarious. DEAD MILKMEN have great insight into politics. This was at the time when they were working on their second album. And they didn't do well on their Canadian punk trivia. 

There is a few fun pieces too like the "Radio Moscow" piece which is a made up story of spins and conspiracies reflecting Cold War mentalities at the time. There is a mock interview with DURAN DURAN which is also pretty funny. 

More humour and more industrial coverage.
