Radio : EXD 1363 - Sunday November 23, 2025

Download the show here

This is episode 1363 of EXD and was put together by Andre Zadorozny, Bee Traverse, Christian Overall, Rob Ferraz, and Stephen Perry. As always N.O.T.A.F.L.O.F. (No One Turned Away for Lack of Funds) and there is a never a cover to hear this show, but we are passing the hat and asking you to support CIUT so we can continue to do what we do. What does the money go for? Last campaign’s money went to fix the transmitter. We had many issues over the year and now the transmitter is fixed and the broadcast can be heard without issue. The next capital projects are to:
  • Upgrade a 16 Year old broadcast board, and
  • build a digital library so that we don't rely on streaming platforms
On this edition of EXD, it's our Fundraising show. We have
  • lots of testimonials (Mike from Longshot, Chico from Gag Order, Joel from Absolut, Chris from Zero Bars / Rate of Decay, Jason from Supreme Echo)

On tonight’s show we have a lot of diverse programs and lots of new material. It was quite the week in terms of current events, but I don’t have much to tie into that this week so you get a week off from our commentary. What you will get is a set inspired by Chris on an interesting panel that he has been sitting on called “What Are you Listening to?”. Andre has a set of bands inspired by shows as of recent. I have a mix of interesting covers of bands like the Epileptics, new stuff by Schwach, a soon to be released song by the Vapids, and new archival releases by the Slinkees. Tonight’s demo feature is the new release by OLD which is a band that Brian Taylor from Youth Youth Youth has put together. Radio - Sunday, June 21st, 2020

For the past few fundraising shows we have stuck with the fun promise of programming an all covers show. Tonight is no exception. Go to www.ciut.fm to support campus/community radio. Download the show here.

M.O.T.O. - Dance Dance Dance Dance Dance to the Radio (Criminal I.Q.Little Teddy)

Love Your Radio is our campaign theme which is why I chose the opening song. Since the pandemic I have relied on this medium. John Peel is probably the best known punk DJ and his favourite song was the Undertones "Teenage Kicks". Here is a version by 63 Monroe.

63 MONROE - Teenage Kicks (Nardem)
DR. KNOW - The Unknown (Death / Restless)
DOA - Takin' Care of Business (Sudden Death)

That was DOA covering BTO’s “Takin’ Care of Business”. Great video for that song. And before that we heard DR. KNOW covering DOA’s “The Unknown”. They did a great version of DOA. And at the top we started out with 63 MONROE out of London, Ontario covering the UNDERTONES “Teenage Kicks”.

Since the pandemic has had us socially isolating, the programmers here had to quickly learn how to produce our shows in our basement studios. Almost every programmer has continued to produce a unique show. We haven’t missed one week. And we’ve been getting you involved in the programming. The last two weeks have been all about the cops in relation to the George Floyd murder with listeners programming some sections of the show. We’ve also played the latest installment of Notes from behind the Iron Curtain with a focus on Estonia. And we’ve done a few top ten shows. You can donate on-line at www.ciut.fm to support shows like this.

You’re tuned in to Equalizing Distort. It’s our bi-annual fundraising show and first ever quarantine episode. We’re all coming to you from various locations around the city via our computers.

There are many reasons that you should support our show and CIUT. As a listener-funded operation, we get the chance to offer you material that you’re not going to hear in too many other places. Everyone who contributes to the show has been into punk and hardcore for years so that adds up to a lot of knowledge. It’s been awhile since we’ve been able to record any bands but we have been doing interviews related to the TOHC book Tomorrow is Too Late. In the last few months we interviewed Direct Action, the people behind the 80s zine Still Thinking and Microedge.

The pandemic has hit the station hard as it has many of you. Please remember that any donation will help. We do this out of our love for the music and the stories behind it. The best way to donate is at ciut.fm because of the quarantine.

Here’s some music starting with the Forgotten Rebels’ cover of a song that seems to always be relevant. Now more than ever.

FORGOTTEN REBELS - Eve of Destruction (Star)
THE DEVIL DOGS - Stay With Me (Crypt)
THE JOLT - Route 66 (Polydor / Captain Mod)

That set started with Eve of Destruction as done by the Forgotten Rebels in 1981. DOA did a version during the presidency of GW Bush and Pussy Riot did a version a few years back. So yeah, it seems to never get old.

And after that, it was the Devil Dogs from New York with a cover of another New York band’s song. It was Stay With Me which was originally recorded by the Dictators. Last up was The Jolt covering the Nat King Cole classic that was covered by about a thousand bands in the 50s and 60s. Route 66.

So an ode to new wave with a techno cover thrown in their. Shout outs to the Prophesy crew who sometimes carry over into our show and if you like that name that tune game that we play with Mr Brown I am sorry we were not able to do that this time. We have some restrictions on what we have been able to do since the lockdown. But we have offered a new show every week and we have gotten a lot of feedback from folks to help with programming leading us to some new ways that we are enveloping community wants and needs into the show. A station who’s programmers listen to you and respond. You don’t get that on commercial radio and rarely on public radio. Support now by donating at www.ciut.fm.

Up next is a Duncan Redmond’s side project called Duncan’s Divas with a cover of a Japanese techno artist called Kimura Kaela.

DUNCAN'S DIVAS - Jasper (Inya Face)
LESS THAN JAKE - Hungry Like The Wolf (Far Out)
BRIXTON ROBBERS - Rock Lobster (Guerilla Asso / Big Wheel)

That was Brixton Robbers from Montreal covering the B52’s hit “Rock Lobster”. LESS THAN JAKE were before that with a cover of Duran Duran’s “Hungry Like the Wolf”. And we started out with DUNCAN’s DIVAS, a side project of Duncan Redmonds from SNUFF. He covered all women bands on this project.

JOAN JETT AND THE BLACKHEARTS - Bird Dog (Epic / MCA / Liberation)
THE OUTCASTS - Five Years (New Rose)
EATER - Waiting for the Man (The Label / Polydor)

Lets get things started with a cover of a DION AND THE BELMONTS song “Teenager in Love”. DION AND THE BELMONTS were an all male vocal group out of the Bronx in the late 50’s and the TOY DOLLS covered them...sort of.

THE TOY DOLLS - Teenager In Love - I've Got Asthma (G.B.H.)
THE SUICIDE MACHINES - I Never Promised You A Rose Garden (Hollywood)
ME FIRST AND THE GIMME GIMMES - Blowin' in the Wind (Fat Wreck)

That was ME FIRST AND THE GIMME GIMMES is a punk rock cover band drawn together by their mutual love of songs from the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s. It is an all star band featuring Fat Mike and band members of band on that label. That was a Bob Dylan cover and the title track of that release which came out in 2001 by the band but was originally released by Dylan in ‘62.

THE SUICIDE MACHINES from Detroit were before that and they have a bunch of convers but I pulled a folky number originally written by Joe South in 1967 called “I Never promised you a Rose Garden”.

And we started out with the TOY DOLLS doing “Teenage in Love” which led into their own song “I’ve Got Asthma” dedicated to all those suffering from the poor air quality, but with less people driving these days it might be going a little better.

Truly unique programming. Have you ever heard those covers on radio before? Donate at www.ciut.fm.

So this set is by contemporary punk bands covering hardcore songs. Starting out with a hockey themed band from Chicago TWO MINUTE MINOR. Off a release called “Extended Lockdown” this is a parody song called “Old Man Hardcore”.

TWO MINUTE MINOR - Old Man Hardcore (Self-Released)
BURNING HEADS - Coff's Harbour Blues (Self-Released)
BUGGY - Why Be Something That You're Not (War)

That was BUGGY, a punk duo from New Jersey and this Negative Approach cover came off a demo that was just released.

Before that was a band out of Orleans, France called BURNING HEADS. They might be an all cover. They have a ton of releases out. We heard “Coff’s Harbour Blues” featuring Seb from SEVEN HATE, a skatecore band out of France. The song was originally done by the HARD ONS from Australia and appeared on a release called “Love is a Battlefield of Wounded Hearts”.

And we started with a song called “Old Man Hardcore” which was a parody song written by TWO MINUTE MINOR from Chicago. This is a benefit release for people working on the front lines of COVID in Chicago.

Up next is a band called CONTENDERS. They released a split cassette last year with another band from their hometown of Hamilton, New Zealand. On it they do a Screamers cover which is “122 Hours of Fear”.

CONTENDERS - 122 Hours of Fear (Self-Released)
CRUSH CRUSHER - Democracy Spawns Bad Taste (O.D.D. Tapes)
MR. T EXPERIENCE - What Difference Does it Make (Lookout)

That was MR. T EXPERIENCE - What Difference Does it Make off the “Milk Milk Lemonade” LP which came out in 1992. The song is a cover of the SMITHS and I think I played another cover of the SMITHS a few fundraising shows back saying that that song was the only SMITHS cover by a punk band well I am wrong again.

Before that we heard CRUSH CRUSHER covering the CRUCIFUCKS song “Democracy Spawns Bad Taste” . We have been playing the CRUCIFUCKS a lot lately, especially on those two punks hate cops shows. CRUSH CRUSHER are from Oklahoma City and this came out on a release called “Q: Are We Not Muppets? A: We are Maniacs”.

All these covers are covers of some of the original outsider punk, which is something we feature and so in tribute to an aspect of our programming I put that set together. That is something that CIUT celebrates is difference. You can hear all kinds of programming on the station. Not just a hardcore punk show on Sunday night. Many of our listeners check out shows like Democracy Now and the Green Majority. The Taylor Report and Moondog Ballroom. Bassment Sessions and Alternative Radio. Canadaland and Career Buzz. Those are just a few of the shows that I listen to and download from the CIUT website, which is newly launched. You should check out the site at www.ciut.fm and while you are there donate a couple of bucks to keep this kind of programming.

SCREECHING WEASEL - Let's Dance (Selfless)
RAMONATURES - She’s the One (Munster / Blood Red Vinyl)
THE VAPIDS - Get Off My Back (Double Hell)
REAL SICKIES - Top Down (Stomp)

That was the REAL SICKIES with a tribute to Canada’s answer to the RAMONES - TEENAGE HEAD. They did a cover on their recent album from last year called Out of Space. We interviewed the Real Sickies when they were out here last and that interview can be found on the blog.

THE VAPIDS were before them with their tribute to TEENAGE HEAD, which was produced by Gord Lewis and we heard the cover of “Get Off My Back”. Came out on Double Hell in 2002. Both the VAPIDS and TEENAGE HEAD were guests and did live radio sessions along with interviews on the show. Great reason for you to support CIUT at www.ciut.fm with all the interviews and studio 3 sessions all archived on our blog and available for people to download.

An all surf band from california called the RAMONATURES were before that with their cover of “She’s the One” which came out on their release “Monetures”.

And we started with SCREECHING WEASEL’s cover album of the RAMONES and we heard “Let’s Dance” a classic.

I am not a huge fan of the RAMONES but so many people are and with summer starting to kick into gear it is great to hear that summer music.

And continuing with the tradition of playing covers the first song from my set was originally released as a b-side in 1976 and has been part of many compilation and re-releases, this song is called “Help” by THE DAMNED.

The first song from my set was originally released as a b-side in 1976 and has been part of many compilation and re-releases, this song is called “Help” by THE DAMNED.

THE DAMNED - Help (Demon)
DETESTATION - Nao Mais (Skuld / Profane Existence)
IMPALERS - Human Kindness (540)

And that was my first set, we started with a classic song original from The Beatles on a much better version in my opinion since i'm not a big fan of The Beatles to be honest, that was the Damned with Help.

Then we heard Detestation with a song called Nao Mais, a cover by a bad ass brazilian band called Republika,They are part of that classic 80’s brazilian scene we all love and Detestation released this on a split with Abuso Sonoro also from Brazil.
And last we hear a much newer classic this song is original by Toronto’s coolest band S.H.I.T and this was the Impalers from Texas version, this song is called Human Kindness.

We lost a script and set that Jose had programmed before he was able to record but we are going to try and add it here. Jose started with the show by helping us do translations for the Cuban bandas Arrabio and Addictox. He then started programming and hosting a series called “Latinoamerica Resiste”. He did an interview with Muro and has become a regular host on the show. Please donate at www.ciut.fm if you appreciate punk from the Spanish speaking parts of the world. More than just the official languages on this show.

This next set is going to start off with a Hispanic super group from Orange County named MANIC HISPANIC. I remember reading reviews about this band but have never had a chance to hear them. They feature members the ADOLESCENTS, AGENT ORANGE, FINAL CONFLICT, and others. This is off of a 2003 release called “Mijo Goes to Junior College” and the song is “The I.N.S. took My Novia Away”.

MANIC HISPANIC - The I.N.S. took My Novia Away (BYO)
CALAMIDAD - Un Porvenir Oscurio (Self-Released)
RATOS DE PORAO - Mucha Policia (Roadrunner / F.O.A.D.)

That was Ratos de Porao from Sao Paolo, Brazil. THe longest running punk band in Brazil. They have a sleuth of releases, but in 1995 they released an album of covers and they recorded it with Portugeues lyrics and with English lyrics. The song Jose chose was originally done by a band from the Basque Region called Eskoburto who was one of the first punk bands to sing in Spanish. That is part of their significance.

CALAMIDAD are a new band from Mexico City, and “Un Porvennir Oscurio” is a cover of a band from Zaragoza called Cocadictos. We will put up a link to their bandcamp page in the morning. That is one of the things we spend a lot of effort doing is adding links to our playlist postings so that you can find these recordings.

So we are going to do our last minute push. If you have been thinking about supporting the station all night now is your chance to do it. Go to www.ciut.fm. Of course you are able to donate after tonight, but it would be great if we could reach our goal tonight of 100,000.

And to do that we are going to go out with a couple of celebratory songs. The first is by a band from China called ANOTHER IDEA. We are going to hear my favourite Sham song “If the Kids are United” and we will follow that up with a cover of Bob Marley’s “Buffalo Soldier” done by a band out of Osaka called HEY-SMITH.

ANOTHER IDEA - If the Kids Are United (Self-Released)
HEY-SMITH - Buffalo Soldier (Caffeine Bomb)
