Pub Night studio 3 session

It was our first blast at winter. It snowed yesterday for the first of the season and it is supposed to snow again tomorrow, but today we get a little reprieve from precipitation. To be honest I can't get the  Asta Kask "Med Is I Magen" cover out of my head. If only the snow were to stick around. But it is too early in the season for accumulation. Anyway loading in during the cold is never pleasant and makes you asks those questions why am I still doing this until you realize that some of these guys are your best friends and you never get to see them anymore. I have known Paul the longest. He played drums in the first real band that I ever got to play in. We were housemates for many years and he let me participate in a zine he did called Drastic Solutions. But Paul  is more currently known as the guitarist in Legion666 where he got to explore his kang side. he is back to playing drums in Pub Night.

Pat, played bass in the Blundermen, which was a band that was SLF inspired and I put out a 10" of theirs on my label Ragamuffin Soldier Records. Paul played in a band with Pat before that called Kops for Christ that Gusher Records released. More recently Pat is in an oi inspired band called Overpower that have never gotten to see because half of them are from Montreal and so making that band work has its challenges. We have talked about having them play on the show but scheduling became a nightmare that neither of us broached. But I do think that Overpower was an inspiration for this new band in remaining the front man.These are the gruffest vocals I have ever heard Pat do. And this is the first time I have heard him play guitar.

I know Ian from further back than his Blowhard days but Blowhard is what I remember him in being in. The interview reveals more band's that Ian has played in and some with some combination of these people.

I saw Pub Night in the spring opening for the Angelic Upstarts. I spoke to them that night about coming on the radio show. Six months later it is happening.

I was surprised to learn that Joel had joined the band. Not only did I not realize they had added a member since their first show, but I would have never guessed it would have been Joel because I have never pictured Joel as being into early 80's oi music. But why not Joel. He had played in Rammer as a lick master. He plays in Absolut currently. I knew he liked straight edge music, so it shouldn't be a shock that he would like and master this too. But Joel has just joined so he is working out where he fits in. So this is one of those rare early recordings by a band. Ian Wilkinson recorded tonight's session. The songs recorded include:

And there were a lot of camera angles for this session by Candy and Aldo. I believe this is Candy's first attempt at editing the session. And Candy also shot photos while holding two videocameras which was insane to watch. She is a juggler.

Hassler "Asphyxiate" ep

Hassler ep HASSLER are a new group from Toronto. They remind me of DOUBLE NEGATIVE in their approach to song writing. They write short songs packed dense with generations of hardcore. It is what a contemporary hardcore band should sound like if they were speaking in tongues about the last three decades of hardcore. The band credits RIPCORD, BGK and a few other noise merchants as their influence despite their despisal of any retro trends. HASSLER is made up of the singer from BAD SKIN, the guitarist from BRUTAL KNIGHTS, the bassist from the REPROBATES, and the drummer from RAMMER. Get it right because I am sick of seeing the crazy lists that are associated with this band which speak to how involved these guys are in the scene. RAMMER brought Al and Jon together and this idea of a band germinated more in a band called KOMMANDO, but they threw everything out when they found Erik and Jay. Any of this previous band history is misleading because HASSLER sounds like none of these bands. They also sound like nothing I have heard before. This recording is blown out and the over modulation serves to suggest that these guys are just kicking it out regardless of any consequences. I have heard their production described as raw-fi which gets close. But the enthusiasm of MRR’s editor captures what I feel about this band after seeing them live. She said about this ep that it is “un-fucking-real. The record is stupid good. If you ever claimed or claim to like hardcore in its most violent, purest forms, then you should love this." I wholeheartedly agree with her. They don’t give a shit about hype. This will make them the best band that you don’t know about. I am telling you to pay attention. I also think that something should be said about the artwork. Adam Kindred from CONCRETE ASYLUM / ABJECT PAX did the cover artwork. Adan has done covers for other bands like TRUNCHEONS. This particular piece channels RUDIMENTARY PENI meets DYS’ “Brotherhood” drawing. Just a gnarly rough street alley scene with characters like a pregnant girl smoking and a personified rat in leathers, which may sound cliché and comedic but sets the tone for a wild party. Various Artists "Toronto's Burning" LP

In the spirit of MCR's city comps Schizophrenic has done a full length comp for Toronto. This is the follow up to the Toronto City Omnibus comp, which was done a few years ago. This comp collects the next generation of Toronto bands. The generation of the Toronto scene was the last one as there is already a huge new crop of bands. that however doesn't make this an important document. There are all kinds of great bands on here half of which have broken up. But this comp captures their existence. Someone was telling me that this cover was originally made for a Buffalo comp but it never got used. The tracks are :

Various Artists “High Art for the Low Down” Dbl CD

What is “High Art for the Low Down”. It’s END PROGRAM’s space opened up to the local scene and touring bands as an all ages venue that does shows. The space is called Sieasta Nouveaux and reminds me of how Burnt Ramen operated out of San Francisco area. See the Ramen Days documentary for reference. Existed out of an old warehouse space in the lower eats end shows have been going on for the last three years and bands that have played have given up a track to make this compilation. There’s a lot of great stuff on here. There is a lot of variety. And it represents a huge part of Toronto’s historical underground over the last few years. The INFEST like nature of TAKE ONE FOR THE TEAM, to the metal exploits of RAMMER, which is a show I got to see. And the liner notes accurately capture the filled to capacity, sweaty pit, frenetic explosion that takes place at the events. A.N.S. from Texas give up a track and there are dozens of locals that most folks outside of Toronto probably haven’t heard of. This is one of many T.O. centered comps coming out in the next little while and is probably one of the most accurate as it is a form of living document. This issue came out in August 2003. The interview featured an interview with Vigilant Resistance from Kingston. We also got to speak to Malefaction from Winnipeg. Lorne Chaitov goes snooping around the set of the "Dawn of the Dead" re-make near his home. There is a profile on Jim Munroe - No Media King. Loads of reviews and a couple of pages of flyers including a page of flyers from Japan.

Zine - EXD, VOLUME 2, ISSUE 9

This issue came out in November 2002 and featured a side project of the Tijuana Bibles fronted by the bass player Blue Demon. There was an interview with Downbelow who featured folks from Triggerhappy and the Tirekickers. Lastly a band from Winnipeg who would become Under Pressure, but were originally called Guns, Liquor, and Whores.
