Purity Control studio 3 session

Purity Control are a hardcore band from Toronto that has been around in various incarnations since 2010. In their early incarnation they recorded two demos which are hard to find now. But over the last two years they solidified the line up with Payson being the original member. He is the singer. Brandon, who also plays in S.H.I.T. plays bass and he reminds me of Eric Wood from PHC, MITB, bastard Noise fame. He plays the bass like Woody in a very possessed sort of manner. Max, plays drums in Abyss and technically reminds me of someone as great as Dave Whyte from Discodrance Axis, East-West Blast Test fame. Derrick, the guitarist is one of the most dramatic elements of the band. Live he nevers faces the crowd but his guitar is constantly swinging wildly and you wouldn't want to be anywhere near him on a stage.

The band is most often described as a power violence band and most often to Infest, although I would have to say they remind me more of Crossed Out if I were to compare them to any of the original cannon of that classic west coast sound. The band grew up on newer school power violence bands like Charles Bronson and Max has a seemless tradition into blast beat paces that are awe stricking to watch and hear.

Payson writes interpretive lyrics born out of the Summer of Revolution and made into a genre through labels like Ebullition. His lyrics are inspired by real life and usually around omse sort of failure or disappointment so the experience is about anguish and pain.

The band members have a shared foundation and love for Left for Dead although that never comes out in the sound.

This line up has recorded two eps, one which came out on High Anxiety, and one that they self-released. The band recorded both eps in Studio 3 along with five new tracks. Also found below is an interview in three parts and some IDs for the show and the station. This session was recorded by Jonathon Hawkes. Here is what was recorded:

1. Remote Viewing
2. Taking Control
3. Holy Hell
4. Sympathy Pains
5. Walking Distance
6. Sex Life
7. Heart Sick

8. Bite Marks
9. Separation Anxiety
10. Light Pollution / Mock Suicide
11. Gag Order
12. Insect Politics
13. Swallowing
14. Brat Fucker
15. Body Horror
16. Stock Options
17. Bedroom Eyes
18. Dear Life
19. Second Sight
20. CIUT ID
21. EXD ID
22. Interview, part 1
23. Interview, part 2
24. Interview, part 3

Aldo Erdic of Punks and Rockers videotaped the session and put together an editted version of the session that you can see below.

Download the show

ABYSS - Coven of the Blood Stalker (Dark Descent)

This first set starts out with this great new power violence/fastcore band from Dortmund, Germany. Asta Kask's 12" was just re-issued by Prank and is the most sold release, but the cover of the band knee deep in snow struck me as Toronto is knee deep in snow. CITIZENS PATROL do a SEEIN' RED cover, which is one of their few songs in Dutch. The SNIFFIN' GLUE song is inspired by the Carnival parades and a story I saw in the news about an injury today in Rio. And I bookened the set with another cover this time by GOVERNMENT FLU doing a cover of an old Polish band named ABBADON who just had an LP re-released by Warsaw Pact.

DIE EULE IM BART DES JUDAS - Asphalt Affe (Spastic Fantastic)
ASTA KASK - Den Enes Brod (Prank)
CITIZENS PATROL -Diktatuur van de wekker (Way Back When / Spastic Fantastic / Too Circle) - Seein Red cover
SNIFFING GLUE - Masquerade (Searching for Fame)
GOVERNMENT FLU - Walcz O Siebie (DIY)

Studio 3 session
I saw ABYSS two years ago opening up for BASTARD NOISE. I have been talking to Rob about trying to get them in to record a set. ABYSS feature members of COLUMN OF HEAVEN and PURITY CONTROL and a former member of LEGION666. ABYSS are a five piece grind band that take themes of splatter-core and apply it to evolutionary theory. This is what they are working on as a follow up to "Accursed Followers and "The Reins of Horror". The devolution has begun. Here is the set during the Abyss interview.

ABYSS - Interview (CIUT)
ABYSS - Die Burning (CIUT)
ABYSS - Interview (CIUT)

YLIVULLAN ORJAT - Ylivalloi Orja (Self-Released)
BED BOYS - Violanzano (Suomi di pace)
ATTENTAT - Ge Fan I Mej (Rykkran)

It has been 9 years since FORWARD's last full length and this one seems particularly inspired by the events in Fukushima. There was a recent interview in MRR with FORWARD that also makes sense out of the Japanese scene in its heyday. That was followed up by North America's answer to a burning spirits band NIGHTBRINGER. We played the song with a French title. That was followed up by two Japanese bands that were just in North America D-CLONE and ZYANOSE.

FORWARD - Resist (Prank)
NIGHTBRINGER - Au Revoir (High Anxiety)
D-CLONE - Living in Chaos (540)
ZYANOSE - Slack Time (540)

The demo feature is a new straight edge band from Glasgow with a sense of humour in the spirit of Nation of Finks. The band features former members of ATOMGEVITTER. Some of the highlights for me are the four second tribute to COCKNEY REJECTS' "East End" in "Crouchy" and the same sort of tribute to GO! with "G.G.G.G." One letter short from a cover. The rest are originals and can be found at xsaxonx.bandcamp.com.

xSAXONx - In the Night (Self-Released)
xSAXONx - Fair Trade (Self-Released)
xSAXONx - Religious Fraud (Self-Released)
xSAXONx - Diamonds and Crust (Self-Released)
xSAXONx - Breaking the Edge (Self-Released)

xSAXONx - Defenders of the Faith (Self-Released)
xSAXONx - Power and the Glory (Self-Released)

Abyss studio 3 session

It was a cold night and the band was waiting for me in the parking strip that is known as 89.5 Tower Road. I know Rob because we were roomates and I know Dave from Rammer and Column of Heaven. But Ethan, Junior, and Max were new. I had seen Max play with Purity Control at the recent Not Dead Yet and they were incredible. Ethan had made a joke with his band and the song "Purity Negation" below. Anyway, tonight was the realization of trying to get Abyss to CIUT since I had first seen them in their opening slot for Bastard Noise two years ago. The band has recorded two cassettes worth of material since then and is working on a full length. This was a good chance to catch them becuase the conceptual ideas of working themselves out. Some of these song titles are working titles but here is a sneak peak at their next release.....

1. Die Burning
2. Napalm Death
3. Purity Negation
4. Sickening Prophecies

5. When death mates with life
6. Blood Urges

7. Flesh Cult
8. Heretical Anatomy
9. Rotting from Without
10. EXD ID
11. CIUT ID
12. CIUT + EXD ID
13. CIUT ID

This session was also documented by video thanks to Aldo Erdic of Punks and Rockers. Below is a medley put together of some of the above mentioned songs....
