I saw Black Iron Prison open for Echthros a couple of years ago. Then at the end of March Iron Lung had released an album by them. I knew both Eric and Matthew from their past projects and had thought it was a shame that I hadn’t heard much about this release. I reached out to them about doing a session and they agreed. I didn’t realize that they were going to record some new material. Lucky for us to be the way that you get to hear that. We start off with a track titled “Spatial Awareness’. We recorded this at Primal Note Studios on June 8th.

The Aggrolites played last night at Adelaide Hall. I didn't get a chance to go but I did look them up and am sad that I did because I found out how interesting they are. The Aggrolites are an amalgamation of two previous Los Angeles Reggae and Ska bands, the Vessels and the Rhythm Doctors. They formed in 2002 as a live backing band for Reggae icon Derrick Morgan and were asked to record music for a new Morgan album. The project was never released, but the recording sessions inspired The Aggrolites to become a permanent band. They have served as the backing band for Phyllis Dillon, Scotty, Joseph Hill of Culture, Prince Buster and Tim Armstrong. Here is a track named Jack pot from the last album that I can find on them “Reggae Now!”.

On this edition of EXD, some new release crate digging which showcases Arret, Klaptrap and Jug. As part of our Black History Month programming we have put together a set of punk bands covering Bob Marley covers and a set of punk bands playing reggae. We speak with the curators of Heavy Metal Karaoke in St. John’s. Our demo feature is also from St. John’s - a spanish speaking band named Desperta. And we get to speak with Otto Buj - the filmmaker for Dope, Hookers and Pavement about his film and the upcoming screening at Innis Town Hall next Sunday. 

Mojo Nixon passed away on February 7th. Mojo Nixon played psychobilly which is music that fuses rockabilly with punk and probably his best known song is “Elvis is Everywhere”. I played a song that I saw him perform at the University of Buffalo while opening up for Butthole Surfers.

The ripple effect of Mein Trumpf's hockey dad response to the real threats by the boys in blue on People of Colour spread out world wide this weekend. The push back happened and although we are hopeful that something will come of it, the problem is a decades old problem. Looking back over forty years of punk the one theme the comes up generation after generation is how badly the cops suck. Thanks to everyone who contributed on facebook with their suggestions. We weren't able to fit all of them in and it is clear that we could probably do a second show. Sadly we probably will have to because if you are a Person of Colour or a Punk George Floyd's experience is going to happen again. Hope this can become a soundtrack for resistance. Tonight's show is the third band in the Tomorrow is Too Late series, which is the radio interviews from the early Toronto hardcore bands that were conducted for the book by the same name. Tonight's band is Micro Edge, Toronto's first skate-core band. They shredded in a way that those early skate bands did (think JFA). They wrote one of the most memorable songs from the era called "(So You Think You're) Hardcore, eh", which is where we start this interview. The song appeared on the limited edition compilation that came with the first pressing of the book. But all of us wanted to see that song come out on vinyl. 

I had interviewed the band once before back when Sudden Impact did a reunion show at our old studio. The interview was lost and consequently never aired. It was one of my biggest regrets. So when they agreed to take a chance again and do this do over, I was super grateful. 

We get talking about how the band got into punk and skating and how the two things intertwined. Reminiscing about the early days of skateboarding reliving the spirit of skaters and that can do spirit, and developing their own culture with a zine that Dave put out called "Bong Out". "Bong Out" had interviews., show reviews, skate shots, and raditorials. I am going to put some pictures of the issues that Dave shared with us on the Facebook page under a Micro Edge photo album. They play with S.C.U.M. who were skaters. They skate with JFA. Reid's editorial and artwork, Dwayne skating shots, reviews of a lot of early shows in Toronto - it's a fantastic time capsule. 

In the interview we talk about some iconic shows in Toronto's hardcore history. We start out by talking about the Circle Jerks for shows in Toronto which included their gig at the Bev under the Spankin' Monkeys. The Dead Kennedys gigs at the Concert Hall were paradigm shifting in terms of the punk scene at the time. Their first gig at the Wexford Battle of the Bands with Boris sporting a mohawk (see right). They talk about Quarantine's all ages matinees. They opened for the F.U.'s from Boston which gets covered in Bong Out. DRI and JFA slept on Boris' kitchen floor. JFA skated the parking garages in Kensington Market. They got to play Start Dancing and saw some of the shows at the Desh Bhaget which is the hall that Start Dancing broke in.  

Micro Edge spend some talking about the scene back then. Getting to see Teenage Head at the Wexford school dance had an impression on Boris. They shared a practice space with YYY and NJF after losing Dave's dad's basement. Dave meets Brian Taylor by chance at the York Mills subway station and wind up being gifted a "Why Pay More" demo which becomes a fought over prized possession. Chronic Submission's association with the skinhead scene. The importance of the Record Peddler on finding out about music, finding out about shows, and meeting people. And the Young Lions who had the Garage, supported Rock Against Racism, and set the groundwork for this scene.

A big snowstorm hit Toronto this weekend and after much snow shovelling this NoMeansNo song "'Til I Die" soke to me with the opening lyric "I'm gonna Shovel snow til I die".

We started off the show with a dedication to Greg Dick for the loss of his father, Martin, who passed away last week. He was from Hamilton and "Picture my face" was a song that Martin knew. We had to keep it Hamilton. The rest of the set was by bands from Belfast because Greg let us know about this film on Belfast called "Good Vibrations". This Friday "Good Vibrations" will be showing the film for a week at the TIFF Lightbox. You should try and see it.

After that I played a set based on my top 10 picks for October and a set of runners up.

There was a set of new material mostly of the grind / power violence nature.

Then a set of galloping hardcore inspired by Discharge, Japacore, and kang.

This show was inspired by a feature in a weekly entertainment magazine known as Now. This past week they did a feature on the Best 50 albums by Torontonians. They had a punk singles list which made very little sense given the enormity of the period and the nubre of bands that have put out great things so we did our own list based on Generations of punk.
