This show was inspired by a feature in a weekly entertainment magazine known as Now. This past week they did a feature on the Best 50 albums by Torontonians. They had a punk singles list which made very little sense given the enormity of the period and the nubre of bands that have put out great things so we did our own list based on Generations of punk. We started off with the punk scene and then we did the hardcore scene. Then we looked at the 90's and the new milennium. Here are the respective lists in reverse order....

Sid's Kids are a new punk band from Toronto made up from Cleave Anderson of the Screwed, and Marcel LaFleur and John Sutton of Arson. They have been playing this punk / new wave night at the Painted Lady and galvanizing members of the early Toronto punk scene in the process through their fun theme nights. We got a chance to speak and record the group with some of their collaborators. This group included Zero from Zro4, Mickey Skin from the Curse, Fergus Hambledon of the Basics and a Passing Fancy, Barrie Farrel of the Existers, and Chris Haight of Zoom and the Viletones.

We also played No Mistake in our demo feature. No Mistake are a new hardcore band from San Jose featuroing Mikey Bullshit of Go! on guitar and some other members of In Disgust and Permanent Ruin. Sid's Kids studio 3 session

Sid's Kids are a punk band featuring Cleave Anderson on drums and Marcel laFleur and John Sutton on guitar and bass from Arson. The band is similar to the Screwed in that they focus on early punk classics. This group is a bit of a session band set up to host a punk / new wave night and have involved quite a few players from Toronto's early waves of punk. The band does some covers like the Damned's "Born to Kill" and the Saints "(This) Perect Day". Covers by local artists include:

Barrie Farrell sings and plays guitar on the Existers "Never Think Big".

There is also an interview done with the group. One of my realizations in doing this interview is that this is a special group of people. The first wave of Toronto punks have remained to be active as a scene which is something I have noticed in other scenes. It is pretty special and continues to impact our scene in many ways. The other thing that needs to be said is that Cleave Anderson is the glue behind so many of these projects and his energy is infectious.

The Existers "Depreciation" CD

The Existers were a first wave punk band from Toronto and they released an ep back in the day. They were on the show a few years ago and played a live set where they realized the interest in what they were doing, so they went back through their tapes and re-learned the songs from back then and recorded them in a studio. This CD is the result of a self-produced CD by the band and it sounds incredible. The songs that appeared on the ep are re-recorded along with 8 other tracks from back in the day. Treat Me Like Dirt

Liz Worth interviewed as many first wave Toronto punks as she could find. She organized their story telling into chapters based around event and ways to describe the scene. The result is an anecdotal story telling by the characters that made up that scene. It is brilliant because punk is an oral history and Liz uses their quotes to retell their stories. She doesn't re-write or paraphrase or even use rock journalism techniques. Instead she gathers quotes by the folks involved in the incidents and has them tell the story. There is always more than one story teller so they go back and forth and you get a perspective on the folk lore and legends of Toronto. Gary Topp, Colin Brunton, Steve Leckie, members of Teenage Head, members of the Diodes, members of the Ugly, and loads of other unsung bands that made up the scene. She hads done an incredible job here of bringing the stories back to life. And Gary Pig Gold of the Pig Paper assists in the editting and Ralph Alfonso publishes this on Bongo Beat Records so this has more than gone through the first wave filter of fact checking. You can be assured that the stories in here are accurate.

The Existers "Telex Love' ep

The Existers were part of the early Toronto punk scene. The band featured were Barrie Farrel on guitar and vocals, George Higton on guitar and vocals, Stephen "Baby Oil" Hall on bass and vocals, and Denis Grey on drums. This came out on Shy Anne records. Songs on this single are:

Another huge line up with a week and a half full of punk shows at the Shoe. The new line up of the Viletones culminating with the Heartbreakers coming into to town.

What a line up ? Starting off with the B-Girls and the Mods on a Monday night and ending with the Dead Boys on a Saturday night. Evidence of the action packed punk scene that Toronto was in the early days. Things haven't really changed.
