“We Gotta Know” podcast just released an interview with Kim Kinakin who was in many bands and was a show promoter and also did a zine. Kind of a punk rock force of nature in Burnaby / Vancouver. You may know him from some of his bands like SPARKMARKER, STRAIN, SAMSARA SEVIN, SKINJOBS, and SAN ANGELUS. It is a 2 plus hours interview but I was pretty riveted in listening.

This is a comp put together by the High Art for the Down Low folks. It is a benefit for the modern day “Books to Prisoners” movement. And this comp comes with a great leaflet that gives you the stats to help you realize that most convicts are prisoners of circumstance and that education could have made the difference in a lot of their lives. But with the conservative wave over the past few years those kinds of opportunities have been made out of reach for ordinary people and prisons are being built at alarming rates which makes a comp like this even more important these days. There are songs by well known bands like BESTHOVEN, WORLD BURNS TO DEATH and BEHIND ENEMY LINES and then there are songs by new bands like PARASYTIC, NAPATHY, and UNBROKEN BONES, who I would give best name on the comp to. There are bands from Canada like GERM ATTAK and MASS GRAVE and international bands like CONTRAVENE and SJU AVAR AR, and FUTURE RUINS who are contributing to these efforts here in Canada. This is a well put together set of songs. Lots of diversity all focused on making a difference. This is the stuff I love to see coming out of the punk scene. My only regret is not having some information about the bands or how to get in touch with them, but that is minor and the cause does remind front and center. Germ Attak "They Live, We Sleep" CD

This is Jo from TRIOXIN 245’s other band. This is their second full length within a year. And I have to say that the opening track about Palestine sounds like a lost DISCHARGE track. But the rest of this disk is more in the vein of DISORDER and the VARUKERS kind of sound. It is a classic early UK hardcore sound. A soundtrack for bristles and bullet belts. And why not. That was a great sound. That was a sound that inspired most of us before we heard our own local scenes. It makes total sense in an era where contemporary bands are looking back and rediscovering the roots of punk. It is a surprise that there aren’t more bands that sound like this. But GERM ATTAK bring something to the sound. The guitar sound is played with less fuzz and more twang. It kind of reminds me a bit of the DEAD KENNEDYS and East Bay Ray’s guitar sound if East Bay ray were to play more UK style punk. And Jo’s lyrics deal with military cover ups and insighting action.
