Various Artists "All Your Ears Can Hear" Double CD

This is a truly amazing compilation. It is one of those scene documentary pieces but instead of it being a film this is a comp. Jason Flower was the main person behind the project and as a result the comp needed to be on 2 CDs. An amazing book where each band participating gets a page that is used to help find out details on them. And the scene they document is their own which is in Victoria, BC. Vancouver is documented pretty well but the scene that NoMeansNo grew out of isn't. The Neos is probably the only other band really known from here and that is only by hardcore collectors. And being geographically isolated Victoria had a chance to develop on thier own more so than other scenes that were on touring routes. As a result you get a snapshot of just some collected highlights of Victoria. You can inquire at Supreme Echo about the availability of this comp but I doubt there is any left. The songs on here are:

Red Tide "Kelp and Salal" ep

Red Tide were from Victoria and evolved out of a number of bands from that scene which include Youth Plague, Suburban Menace, and Censored Chaos. The band was described as the Hummer of Punk Rock in that it was utilitarian, stripped down, hard and fast inspired by the jack-hammer of life which pounded away in our heads as they drank lots of beer and took acid/mushrooms on as many weekends as we could find them. The band became known for the song "Incubator Slide" that appeared on the "Welcome to 1984" comp that MRR compiled. Toxic Shock Records from the States released this ep as it's fourth release in 1984. Red Tide featured Ken Jensen who would go on to play in DOA and die in a house fire. Prior to this they had recorded a couple of tapes and an unreleased LP. They got to play with the Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Pearl Jam, Really Red, Dead Kennedys, the Dayglos, and No Means No. The songs on this 7" are:
1. Santa Mari Marushi
2. Price For Progress
3. War Criminals
4. It's More A Feeling
This ep was later re-released by Toxic Shock as a Cd titled 4 old eps.

Various Artists "Medium Raw" tape

I get the sense that this was teh first ever comp to document the Victoria scene. This is almost excusively bands from vancouver island with a few exceptions. The comp was put out by BYO and Tim Yohannon had this to say about it "An excellent long-player's worth of British Columbia's current crop of bands. The Neos appear with some previously released material, but the rest (Automatic Shock, Chronic Submission, Jerk Ward, LSD, House of Commons, Red Tide, the Infamous Scientists, SS Top, Da Jeep, and the cool Dayglo Abortions) all chip in with new material, most of which is fine. Very little filler." -(from Maximum Rocknroll #12, March 1984)

1. The Neos - Typical Obligatory Anti-Government Song2. The Neos - Life Sentence
3. The Neos - I Don't Want to Be

4. The Neos - Sexual Revolution
5. Automatic Shock - Mushrooms
6. Automatic Shock - Fuck Off
7. Chronic Submission - Sick of Reality
8. Chronic Submission - Narc
9. LSD - Ursula
10. SS-Top - Swamp Stomp
11. House of Commons - Way Down South
12. House of Commons - Do You Feel Low
13. House of Commons - Feed Us Feed Us

14. House of Commons - American Patriot
15. Jerk Ward - I Love the Girls
16. Jerk Ward - Major Threat
17. Jerk Ward - UFO
