Jon Card tribute
Jon Card passed away (April 8th) Canadian drummer, known for his work in punk bands. Referred to by many as Canada’s best punk drummer. He certainly played in a ton of iconic Canadian punk bands. Card founded the band Plasticide, later called Suburban Slag, in Calgary, Alberta. After seeing the band Personality Crisis in Calgary, he moved to Winnipeg, Manitoba to join the group. This led to stints with punk bands SNFU, DOA and The Subhumans.

Brian passed away on Leap Day. All the eulogizing is making me think he was a great guy when he wasn’t. I strongly recommend the book “On the Take” by Stevie Cameron. The book documents crime corruption and greed in government during the Mulroney Years. He visited York University and the students pelted him with dried pasta chanting “We’re Tired, We’re Boney, We’re eating macaroni”. He sold us out to the Americans and screwed this country over. On this edition of EXD, some new release crate digging which showcases Arret, Klaptrap and Jug. As part of our Black History Month programming we have put together a set of punk bands covering Bob Marley covers and a set of punk bands playing reggae. We speak with the curators of Heavy Metal Karaoke in St. John’s. Our demo feature is also from St. John’s - a spanish speaking band named Desperta. And we get to speak with Otto Buj - the filmmaker for Dope, Hookers and Pavement about his film and the upcoming screening at Innis Town Hall next Sunday. 

Mojo Nixon passed away on February 7th. Mojo Nixon played psychobilly which is music that fuses rockabilly with punk and probably his best known song is “Elvis is Everywhere”. I played a song that I saw him perform at the University of Buffalo while opening up for Butthole Surfers.
