Torbjörn Rolandsson - from Leper, UX Vileheads - does a scene report feature looking at obscure old Swedish punk, Umea hardcore, and reflecting some Montreal punk back to us. That’s in the second hour of the show. The first hour features a ton of new releases that Chris showcases. Andre does a feature on blacked punk. Torbjorn contacted me around the time that "The Eye" ep had come out. At the time he told me of his plans to coming to McGill to work at the university for a short period of time. We soon hatched a plan to do a radio feature as our scene report guest. We came up with the idea on a set about Sweden, a more focused set on Umea and then a set on Montreal given it was going to be his adopted home. Here is that report.....

Porcelain Forehead "Right Now! The World needs a Clear Head" CD

This is a re-release on the ep by the same name as a CD. This Ottawa area band is responsible for the CD release. Canuckistan provides an awesome description of the original release

"Much of Right Now... straddles the two worlds of straight-up seventies punk and the rapid-fire rhythms of hardcore, with songs like the biting 'Unfinished Porch' ("Big business knows its friends / You'd better do what they say") and 'Human Torch' veering off into Minutemen territory with Bruce Stevenson's staccato bass riffs. And then there is the fiery 'That Number Again Folks' ("Porcelain Forehead's tuneful punk crowd-pleaser"). To Hillis, the anti-Jerry Falwell screed was in fact doubly significant, "...as in, 'call this number and gimme some money, it's goin' to gawd!' and also cheeky, as in, 'you've heard this riff kids, somewhere, I think you must've, well here it is again gang!'... self-conscious to the hilt."

My main criticism of this CD re-issue is that the band also has a number of songs that live only on out of print compilations. This was an opportunity to collect all of those.  But for fans of the band the last of the two songs are newly recorded so that is great news. The songs on here are:

Porcelain Forehead "Frog Boy Lives" LP

Porcelain Forehead were from Ottawa. They had an ep out and appeared on a Blender Mix comp and the "P.E.A.C.E." comp, which was a well known comp put out by MDC on their R Radical Records label. The P.E.A.C.E. comp helped make Porcelain Forehead a known name in the punk scene. Porcelain Forehead also released a little known ep called "Right Now the World Needs a Clear Head". This LP was released in 1993 by Frank Manley who was compiling the "Smash the State" book at the time. The Porcelain Forehead material was posthumously released and recorded back in 1985. V/A "Primitive Air Raid" LP

Primitive Air Raid is the first record of it's kind in Montreal. It is a random sample of Montreal's unrecorded underground. A few alternative bands made the record, but largely this represented the underground. the scene in Montreal has been alive for years. S.C.U.M. was asked to particpate but had difficulties retreiving their recording so they missed the deadline. Violent Meals went to Europe and forgot to leave their tape. Porcelain Forehead were from Ottawa and Direct Action were from Toronto. Both bands played a benefit show for the comp and as a result were added to this comp. This classic comp was the first release by Psyche Records who would go on to produce a number of other releases mostly of Montreal bands.

Jeff Bale reviewed the comp in MRR as "An excellent cross-section of Montreal-area bands, most of which haven't released any vinyl before. From the thrash of DIRECT ACTION and NO POLICY to the chunky pop-punk of the NILS to AMERICAN DEVICES' weird, rockin' stuff to fast punk by GENETIC CONTROL, the ABSURDS, and FAIR WARNING to the garage punk of PORCELAIN FOREHEAD to MORBID FIRE's experimental garage thrash, this album provides listening enjoyment. The only musical letdowns are art- damaged numbers by ≠ and IAGO NEON. The ASEXUALS, on the other hand, provide the lyrical low-point with their imbecilic pro-contra chant; their line "political morons without a fucking clue" must be autobiographical, since they apparently know nothing about Nicaragua, American foreign policy, or the circle-A which they employ in their moniker." (from Maximum Rocknroll #19, November 1984)
