AHPC14 - Donnybrook - Austrian Infantry regt Lothringen, Vienna 1683. 125pts

This was originally posted late in the Challenge on 18th March.

Its 23.34 in England, I've gotta get up at 5.45, so I should be tucked up in bed at my age???
Instead I've just finished basing these figures up and taking some pics.

Here we have a few more figures for my Donnybrook, Vienna 1683 project

These 2 x 8 figure units represent the Austrian Infantry regt of Leopold von Herzog Lothringen

I did want to paint up a different regt but this one only needed red stockings, so would be quicker.

In addition to the infantry, we also have 4 Sergeants

Most of the figures are from Dixon minis, with a smattering of Wargames Foundry in the Sergeants and Officers.

Also Officers in blue coats and a drummer in red.

Rear view!

The flag was a copy of one from Warflag, which I then changed the colours to match the units differing colours and added the orb in the centre of the double headed eagle.

So all in all 25 x 25mm figures making a total of  125 points!

I do have 1 last post, but I don't know the figures are gonna dry in time???

AHPC12 - Planet Curt - Vienna Militia & Ottoman Archers

From Minion GregB
"Ray has successfully navigated the perilous interstellar shoals of the Challenge 12 Quadrant, arriving at the very core of this complex set of worlds. Thus he has earned a final Challenge from the Snowlord!"

"Ray, I love your Siege of Vienna project, and I think it needs a further boost! We know what prodigious, sandbag-levels of painting you are capable of...therefore, to appease the Great and All-Knowing Snowlord, you shall paint TWO more units for this project - one for the Ottoman side, and one for the defenders of Vienna!
Good luck Ray!"
GregB

After a lot of thought I decided on the two units I'd paint up for my trip to the centre of the Challenge Universe. I've been painting up loads of Poles, for my Siege of Vienna project, BUT , the Poles came to the recue of the Austrians holed up in Vienna and did not defend the walls.

So I chose a unit of Austrian's, I do have a unit of infantry I want to paint up, but there's at least 20 figures in that unit, so I chose a smaller unit of Austrian town Militia. A small 8 figure unit with 4 command figures, all from Dixon Miniatures.

The Austrians loved their grey, so the only colour other than grey is their red neckerchief.

Officers could wear whatever they fancied!

So I painted him up in the same kinda blue as is on the flag, which I found online.

Rear shot!
I do like that flag!

And now for the Ottomans!

I didn't actually have any Ottomans ready or planned to paint anymore during this Challenge.

I did have the artillery, previously posted, but I'd already started painting them at the time.
So I delved into the big box of figures I bought from fellow blogger Dave Crook, he was selling them as part of a collection of his friend Eric who passed away.

In said box were 8 Old Glory archers and 8 Dixon archers.
So I mixed them together, to make a unit of 12 archers to represent some of the lighter Seyman Peasant Militia conscripted by the Ottomans from their provinces such as Anatolia, Judea, Egypt, Armenia or Capadocia, where these fine fellow are from.

The Dixon figures are pretty small up against the Old Glory figures and are not that animated either.

But double basing them brings them up to roughly the same height..

So there we have it...
2 units one for each side for the Siege of Vienna 1683!!!

Austrians x 12 figures 60 points
Ottoman x 12 figures 60 points
Dunno if you get extra for making it to the centre or not?

Late 17th Century Comparison photos

Keith from Bydad blog posed a question about the size of Redoubt Enterprises figures in my last post. So I've taken a few comparison shots of similar figures to give him and you fellow reader an idea of their sizes.

In the above pic from left to right we have
Warfare Miniatures Cossack, Redoubt Polish Winged Hussar, Warfare Ottoman Archer, Redoubt Pancerni, another Redoubt Hussar (on a different horse), a Foundry Pancerni and lastly an Essex Pancerni

Yes Redoubt are the largest, but do fit in well with the Warfare Ottoman range. Not sure if the Cossack is on a smaller horse by design or not? Foundry and Essex are tiddlers!

I thought I'd include a few infantry as well, just incase. From left to right.
Dixon, Foundry, Redoubt Janissary (the hat is lager that all the other figures, making it look bigger than it actually is), North Star, Warfare, Foundry and lastly another Dixon, but he's on a double base to make him a little taller.

Hope this helps?

Donnybrook - Imperialist Infantry Baden Baden 1683 Standard Bearer

Back in April 1 of my entries into the Analogue Painting Challenge was the Austrian foot regt Baden Baden. (Link)
The only thing missing from the unit was a flag, I don't know of any company which makes this regimental flag, although it and others are in the pipeline from Warfare Miniatures, so I've been told.
I'm not that patient and couldn't wait so I made my own, kinda?
Once Warfare start selling these I shall replace mine with their better quality flag.

AHPC11 - Donnybrook - Imperialist Infantry Baden Baden 1683

I thought I'd try and squeeze in 1 last post before the end of the Challenge and after painting all those lovely Warfare Miniatures Ottomans, I thought I'd start an Austrian/ Imperialist force for them to battle against.

Now a lot of this force will probably consist of Poles, but I thought I'd start with an Imperialist foot regiment as I haven't any Poles!

I hadn't planned on painting this unit up during the Challenge, so a quick look in the League of Augsberg's book "With Talon and Claw" and I decided on regt Baden Baden.

You may notice they're missing their flag. Apparently Warfare Miniatures will be releasing some Austrian flags shortly, So the unit will have to wait to be flagged.

All but 1 of the figures are from Dixon Miniatures, the other being from Foundry.
There are 21 figures in this regiment so they will add 105 points to my total!

AHPC11 - The Chamber of Challenge - The Armoury - Spahi of the Porte

Its Chamber of Challenge time once again and  I've just been dropped off at the Armoury by Sarah
the Sorceress.

The Armoury: Paint a figure, a vignette or unit which is armoured - plate, steel, iron, ceramic, chain-mail - the choice is yours.

This unit of 6 x Spahi of the Porte have jumped way ahead of the queue. These originally were going to be painted up right at the end of the Challenge if at all???
But....

I needed a figure or figures in armour for the Armoury and wanted to paint something up I'm actually going to use, rather than stick in a box, never to be seen again for a few years.

The figures are from Dixon Miniatures and match in height wise quite well with Warfare minis who will make up the majority of my Ottoman force.

For my force the Sipahis of the Porte will be an Elite unit using a D10, so even though they're small, they should throw a big punch.........Poles and Imperialists beware!!!
(BTW, I haven't any Poles or Imperialists, yet?)

60 pts for the Sipahi
20 pts Bonus for the Armoury

Donnybrook - English Grenadiers

I've been wanting to paint up some Grenadiers for my Donnybrook Shenanigans for some time, so during the lockdown I thought I'd take a small break from the Haitian Revolution and go Donnybrook once again.
Its all Martin from 28mm Heroes blogs fault. After getting the great pressie in the post a month ago, Martin mentioned that he had some Grand Alliance figures for sale, so I bought a few from him, they got a little damaged in the post So I tarted them up a little, then varnished them several times in matt to get rid of Martin's old style gloss.
After painting basing them up I decided to finally get around to doing a few more. So out came the mega pile of unpainted lead I bought from fellow blogger Dave Crook the summer before last (I think?)
They're all Dixon minis which are a little smaller than most nowadays, but they're still crackin looking figures. Mistake No 1, I should have checked the Donnybrook ruleset for numbers in units ( you'd have thought I knew this off by heart by the amount of Donnybrook posts I've done??)
I painted 6 figures when it should have been 8? Don't tell anyone......

The first unit represents Leslies regt or could be any other red coated and red cuffed unit in the English, Jacobite or Dutch armies.

Blue? I hear you ask? Yes blue, up until 1690 the Earl of Bath regt wore a blue coated faced red.

A very generic looking unit, mine are the 1st Guards commanded by the Duke of Schomberg, but again
they could pass for any blue cuffed regt in the 3 armies.

The buff cuffed unit is Charles Churchill's regt otherwise known as the Holland regt, later known as The Buffs. Incidentally Churchill was the brother of the other Churchill, The Duke himself.

Many regts had the cuff colour white, including many of the Scots regiments, so I've gone for the Earl of Levan's regt for mine. Of course it could also be any of the others.

Lastly, yellow was a popular colour for cuffs in the English army, so these could represent army units,
Mine is Trelawney's regt, otherwise known as the 2nd Tangier regt.

AHPC9 - Donnybrook - Berkley's Dragoons c1689

My penultimate post of the Challenge unless I really get my finger out and finish
 the unit I'm painting.
Can't see it happening though.

And yes it is more Donnybrook!!!!!

Here we have the 6 figures for the English regt Berkley's Dragoons

The figures are from Dixon minis, which are a real pleasure to paint, they almost
paint themselves!

"The Monmouth’s rebellion scared Parliament into forming the first standing Army in 1685, among it six regiments of horse and two of Dragoons. It was constituted of six troops, raised by the honourable John Berkeley and named after him as "Berkeley’s Dragoons" it’s recruiting area for all of the troops was Wessex. Berkeley married Barbera Villiers, an intimate friend of the King’s younger daughter, Princess Anne. Thus came about the first title of the Regiment "The Princess Anne of Denmark’s Regiment of Dragoons". In October Berkeley’s Dragoons rode into London to be inspected by the King, a critical Commander, who was nevertheless impressed with them. For the next three years the regiment came to annual summer camp on Hounslow Heath. In the glorious revolution of 1688, the Regiment performed the same role as most of the King’s Army changing to William of Oranges side when the Monarchs position became untenable."

"In 1689 Berkeley’s Dragoons saw their first action in Scotland fighting against those still loyal to King James. The following year Fitzhardinge took over the colonelcy from Berkeley and the title of Princess Anne’s Regiment fell into disuse. In 1692 the Regiment went to Flanders to fight against the French for six years, a tedious succession of marching and counter marching waiting to catch the enemy unawares. In 1692 they fought at Steenkirk, a badly orchestrated defeat in which Fitzardinge’s Dragoons lost 130 Killed, despite their conspicuous gallantry. The colonelcy changed again in 1693, when the Earl of Essex took over for almost twenty years. Two years later the Regiment helped to recapture the fortress of Namur. After the peace of Ryswick in 1697, Essex’s Dragoons returned to Yorkshire, a blooded Cavalry Regiment."

There are also 6 dismounted Dragoons and a leader figure.

Here's the mounted version of the leader.
