Harrison Ford / Trump

Harrison Ford
TRUMP

l don’t know of a greater criminal in history. He doesn’t have any policies, he has whims. It scares the sh*t out of me. The ignorance, the hubris, the lies, the perfidy. [Trump] knows better, but he’s an instrument of the status quo and he’s making money, hand over fist, while the world goes to hell in a hand basket. It’s unbelievable. I don’t know of a greater criminal in history," Ford told The Guardian. “He’s losing ground because everything he says is a lie. I’m confident we can mitigate against [climate change], that we can buy time to change behaviors, to create new technologies, to concentrate more fully on implementation of those policies. But we have to develop the political will and intellectual sophistication to realize that we human beings are capable of change. We are incredibly adaptive, we are incredibly inventive. If we concentrate on a problem we can fix it most times.

Trump, Netanyahu and Khamenei – three angry old men who could get us all killed

Whether inept, driven by survival or corrupt, they are unfit to lead their countries, let alone make decisions that imperil the whole world

Simon Tisdall

This was not inevitable. This is a war Israel chose. It could have been prevented. Diplomatic talks were ongoing when the bombers took off for Iran. Israel’s continuing, illegal, unjustified airstrikes are unlikely to achieve their stated aim – permanently ending Tehran’s presumed efforts to build nuclear weapons – and may accelerate it. They must stop now. Likewise, Iran must halt its retaliation immediately and drop its escalatory threats to attack US and UK bases.

An American tragedy: how Biden paved the way for Trump’s White House return

To admirers, Biden will remain one of the most consequential one-term presidents in US history – to detractors, he was undone by a fatal flaw

David Smith

Saturday 18 January

His back straight, his voice steady, Joe Biden stood at the US Capitol just days after a violent insurrection and declared: “Democracy has prevailed.” Fast forward three and a half years and America’s president cut a different, diminished figure. “We finally beat Medicare,” he muttered in confusion in Atlanta, Georgia.

Donald Trump’s Revenge

Donald Trump’s Revenge

The former President will return to the White House older, less inhibited, and far more dangerous than ever before.

Electing Donald J. Trump once could be dismissed as a fluke, an aberration, a terrible mistake—a consequential one, to be sure, yet still fundamentally an error. But America has now twice elected him as its President. It is a disastrous revelation about what the United States really is, as opposed to the country that so many hoped that it could be. His victory was a worst-case scenario—that a convicted felon, a chronic liar who mismanaged a deadly once-in-a-century pandemic, who tried to overturn the last election and unleashed a violent mob on the nation’s Capitol, who calls America “a garbage can for the world,” and who threatens retribution against his political enemies could win—and yet, in the early morning hours of Wednesday, it happened.

Early Saturday evening, a series of photos and videos depicting a shocking moment appeared across our digital screens– the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump at a Pennsylvania campaign rally.

In the heat of the assassination attempt, the bloodied ex-president’s defiance created a picture that echoes works of frontier heroism and religious resurrection. Could it be a warning of what is to come?

This breaks your heart. Or at least it does if you oppose the politics of Donald Trump. For with one image, he may have won the 2024 US presidential election. Photographer Evan Vucci captured it, and has rightly won praise for it, but we should acknowledge that it was Trump who made it. And he made it with presence of mind and courage.

Here’s what makes Evan Vucci’s Trump photograph so powerful

Trump lightly injured after attack at rally: ‘I felt the bullet ripping through the skin’

The gunman was shot by the Secret Service, while one rally attendee was killed and two others were seriously wounded by the gunfire. The former president left with a wound in his ear and blood on his face

Former U.S. President Donald Trump suffered an attack on Saturday while at a rally in Butler (Pennsylvania). He had been speaking for a few minutes when shots rang out. He put his right hand to his face, as if he had been hit, fell to the ground and was covered by Secret Service agents. He was slightly wounded by a bullet that hit his ear. He left the stage with a trail of blood on his face and his fist raised to the cheers of his supporters. The shooter, whose identity and motives are unknown, was shot dead by security services. One rally attendee was also killed and two others were seriously injured, authorities said. The attack is being investigated as an assassination attempt.

It is a photograph that seems almost impossible: moments after a bullet grazes his ear, a former US president stands with his fist raised defiantly. The sky behind him is clear blue and an American flag flies overhead, fully in frame. The expressions on the faces of each secret service agents are clear and a smear of blood runs from Donald Trump’s ear to his cheek.

David Remnick: ‘The United States has been an imperfect democracy since its founding’

The editor of ‘The New Yorker’ talks to EL PAÍS about Donald Trump and the deepening ideological differences his country faces as it heads toward elections in November

CAMILA OSORIO
Mexico -

The night that Donald Trump won the 2016 US presidential election, David Remnick, the editor of the prestigious magazine The New Yorker, impulsively wrote a column that went viral within seconds. “The election of Donald Trump to the presidency is nothing less than a tragedy for the American republic,” he wrote. “[It is] a triumph for the forces, at home and abroad, of nativism, authoritarianism, misogyny, and racism. [...] Fascism is not our future – it cannot be; we cannot allow it to be so – but this is surely the way fascism can begin.” Four years on, Remnick says he would not change a word of it.

Putin’s Revenge

Humiliated by the 1990s, Russia’s strongman is determined to win Cold War 2.0. He may be succeeding.

December 16, 2016

Twenty years before Vladimir Putin began his ingenious campaign to influence the U.S. presidential election, his predecessor as Russia’s president stood on a dark street near the White House. In his underpants. Looking for a pizza.
