I Quit Smoking 18 Years Ago Today

I thought it was funny when the conversation about smoking cigarettes being "cool" again reared its head last week, as I was prepping for this annual post I've been doing for eighteen years now -- if you look it up this conversation pops up about every two years and everyone acts all outraged again. And as I say every year -- smoking is bad for you! I am glad I quit eighteen years ago today! And yet I also think that it's undeniable that it just looks cool -- it's erotic, it's cinematic, it's literally "bad for you" as I just said and I'm of the mind that we'll stop being human beings when we stop romanticizing nihilism. We're always gonna be attracted to the "bad boy" archetype, even when it's Gina Gershon in Bound. (Hell especially when it's Gina Gershon in Bound.)

Anyway I make some form of that argument every single year so's I can justify this post. Eighteen years of them now! That's wild. And no I don't miss smoking in the slightest, even if I one thousand percent understand the sould-crush that the kids are feeling so they're picking up the cancer-sticks again. I'm not judging anybody -- I get it y'all. The world's on fire -- you might as well lean in and light some drugs up off of it. With that said over the past twelve months I've gathered a ridiculous amount of pictures and gifs for y'all (over 150) so let's get to those. Hit the jump and inhale...

Catching Up With Matty

Those of us who worship at the altar of Matthias Schoenaerts are not fed well -- he hasn't been in anything since The Regime with Kate Winslet aired ten and a half lifetimes ago (otherwise known as uhh one year ago) and that's the way it's been for awhile -- one project a year, here and there, sporadically. We cannot surive this way, Matthias! Thanksfully there was some news on the Matty front this morning though -- he's signed in to star in a movie called Le Cowboy which has the super original storyline of a criminal roped into doing "one last job" that involves kidnapping a girl but then the two bond... yeah, we've seen this movie a thousand times before. Whatever. I'll watch him put his spin on it! The writer-director is Shane Atkinson whose film LaRoy Texas starring Steve Zahn and John Magaro played Tribeca last year and left not a huge impression on me, but I remember some people digging it.

Anyway that spot of new news made me realize that if we're lucky we might be coming to an end on the Schoenaerts drought -- I had completely forgotten for one that he is playing the bad guy in the Supergirl movie that DC hired I Tonya director Craig Gillespie to direct and which has apparently already been filmed. And he's also somehow in The Old Guard 2 even though (spoiler) he died in the first one, and we just got the first image from that movie last week. (See below.) So that must be coming out soon, I guess.

First look at THE OLD GUARD sequel! (And here's to hoping everybody's favorite ancient crime-fighting homosexuals Marwan Kenzari & Luca Marinelli have added Henry Golding into their mix)

And then of course there's The Way of the Wind, Terrence Malick's now many years in the making movie about Jesus (yes, Christ) that has Matthias playing the disciple Peter.  We first posted about that movie getting started SIX YEARS AGO. With Malick though who knows -- he could take another six years. The names in that stacked cast are endless -- Mark Rylance, John Rhys-Davies, Joseph Fiennes, Ben Kingsley, FRANZ ROGOWSKI, Eileen Atkins, Aidan Turner, Mathieu Kassovitz. Also since it's Malick half of those people could end up on the cutting room floor -- it could be three hours of Mark Rylance spinning in a field for all we know.

ETA an hour after posting this Netflix unloaded some more images from The Old Guard 2 including one very much confirming Matthias' presence therein, and another one of eternal boyfriends Luca Marinelli & Marwan Kenzari, and far be it from me not to add them to this post!

The Old Guard 2 is out on July 2nd.
Oh and here's the trailer too since we're here:

Good Morning, World

I've had a few gifs of The Hobbit and Being Human actor Aidan Turner rocking the world's hottest mustache burning a hole in my Plaid Pants for a few weeks now, but I'm glad I've waited to share them (they're all from his series Rivals) because now I've got even hotter (i.e. more naked) ones! I've been taken with Aidan for some many years now (as our archives can attest) but he's one who just keeps getting better and better looking with age -- the way he looks on this show has me spinning in my office chair like a top, steam whistling out my ear-holes. At least I think those are my ear-holes? It could be any hole honestly, I can't even tell anymore. Hit the jump for seven more hole-blowing gifs...

By Bloody Glory

.
Buffy and How To Get Away With Murder actor Charlie Weber -- see our previous posts on him here -- just 'grammed this photo from the set of HTGAWM, saying "a lot happens" on tonight's episode, and I don't watch that show but it looks like what he is saying might be true. Anyway that photo reminded me of a poll I did a couple of years back around Halloween time involving a whole bunch of hot guys slathered in karo syrup, and when I went looking for the post I found the poll service I'd used back then wasn't working any more. So I fixed it, and now you should go back and vote on that poll again. I promise you lots of sexy bloody hotness at the link will be your prize for clicking through.

Renaissance Man

.
Poldark beauty Aidan Turner has just signed on to play probable-homosexual painter and inventor Leonardo Da Vinci in an eight-part miniseries, each part focusing on a different aspect of Da Vinci's genius.  (One of those "aspects of genius" should be "sucking dick" probably.) Running the show will be Frank Spotnitz from The X-Files and more recently Medici; Turner will presumably get around to doing this once he finishes filming his role as the Apostle Andrew in Terrence Malick's Jesus movie.

Anyway excuse me for my confusion but when I set out to write this post I thought that Aidan Turner had already played Da Vinci on that Da Vinci's Demons show I didn't watch, but I was just confusing his Poldark Abs with Tom Riley's Da Vinci Abs.

Today's Fanboy Delusion

Today I'd rather...

... Matthias & Friends hit the top button.

Those "friends" just happen to be the very fine actors Numan Acar and Mathieu Kassovitz, so shame on me for not properly crediting them right off the bat -- these three beards have joined together for Terrence Malick's next flick The Last Planet, which I've told you about previously. Schoenaerts is playing Saint Peter in the flick, which is some sort of religious fable and which also stars Mark Rylance as Satan and the great Géza Röhrig as Mr. Christ (some call him by his first name).
.
.
Anyway Acar shared that top shot on his Instagram today -- he and Matthias have clearly hit it off since that picture immediately above on the left was also one he took -- giving me the first confirmation of some other actors cast in Malick's film besides the three we'd heard about; and now I check IMDb and there's actually a ton of actors listed...

... Aidan Turner is playing Saint Andrew! Uncle Benjen from Game of Thrones (aka Joseph Mawle) is playing Saul! Ben Kingsley and Joseph Fiennes and Douglas Booth are all playing... well, somebody, we don't know who yet! Oh, and...

... second most excitingly for me (after Matty obviously) is the word that Malick has hired Martin McCann for an unspecified role; if you don't know who McCann is he starred in a movie called The Survivalist in 2015 and gave one of my absolute favorite performances that year there -- he's worked steadily since then but not in anything big and not in anything I've seen and I keep checking on him, hoping he'll get a role worthy of his talent. There's no indication whether this will be that -- lord knows Malick loves to cast a billion people and then edit seventy percent of them out by the time the finished product rolls around -- but I can hope!

Our Second Summer Fantasia

.
Last year I covered the Fantasia International Film Festival for the first time, and it's that time of year again - the festival opens tomorrow in Montreal and runs through August 2nd and I'll be reviewing some films (from my perch here in NYC thanks to the magical invention called The Internet) both here and over at The Film Experience, so stay tuned. But speaking of if you head over to TFE now I've written up a list of several movies I'm pretty excited about seeing, which include one that funny enough stars our well-bearded fella seen up, top, Vincent Cassel. It's called Fleuve Noir, and here's it's International (aka it's in French) trailer:
.

.
Fleuve Noir is the first film from director Erick Zonca since Tilda Swinton kicked all our asses in 2008's Julia, and that's enough to get me excited on its own - add Vinnie & Romain Duris having a competition to see who can rock the bushiest beard in a crime-thriller and I'm basically leaking enthusiasm from all my ports.

That movie (which is actually out in France next week, by the way) is just one of dozens that I want to see though - head over to Fantasia's website and check out the whole schedule; it's pretty insanely stacked with genre movies that sound nuts or awesome or nuts and awesome. So stay tuned! And until then I wouldn't be me if I didn't note that bless the French with their trailers that have obscured flashes of full-frontal nudity in them -- hit the jump for a couple of gifs...

Aidan Turner Ten Times

.
Look who's gone and grown a big beautiful beard! It's Poldark and Being Human and Hobbit actor Aidan Turner, who posed for these photographs in something called Article Magazine (via, thanks Mac) and gosh it makes him look all kinds of brawny man. Which i guess is good since the next project he has lined up according to IMDb is something called The Man Who Killed Hitler and then The Bigfoot... that's a lot of over-sized killing! One needs to be a brawny man for such things. (And that's without even mentioning that Aidan's co-star is the brawniest man around Mr. Sam Elliott.) Hit the jump for nine more stylishly brawny pictures...

Good Morning, World

.
A happy 34th birthday to Aidan Turner this morning (click through our archives on Aidan for more pictures). These shots in this post are of course from his run on the series Poldark, which set many an internet heart a'flutter - indeed it wasn't until he showed off all this in the trailer for this series in 2015...
.
... that he caught my eye, even after previously having seen him on both Being Human and the Hobbit films. It all came together then... I suppose we all came together then. On that note for a few more gifs hit the jump...

I Quit Smoking Eight Years Ago Today

.
Here a puff, there a puff, everywhere a puffing poof - well it's that time of year again! For eight years we've been commemorating the fall of the house of nicotine, when I gave up the bad habit for... well, other bad habits. Anyway every May 5th we say "Hooray for me and my lungs!" with photographs of attractive gentlemen-folk doing damage to their own in the name of sexiness.

And here we are again. We've previously posted enough smoking pictures to blot out the sun itself - you can see Year 1 right here, you can see Year 2 right here, you can see Year 3 right here, you can see Year 4 right here, and you can see Year 5 right here, and you can see Year 6 right here, and you can see Year 7 right here. And with all of those that have come before in mind let us now hit the jump to suck down on 50-something more men for Year 8...

Good Morning, World

.
Happy St. Patrick's Day! I received several emails and tweets back in December from a completely different person asking me to do a post on Aidan Turner's towel-clad display in the BBC miniseries of Agatha Christie And Then There Were None, and somehow I never got around to it (probably the holidays), and when suddenly it began happening again this week (the emails, the tweets) I had to look it up - I guess they aired the miniseries on Lifetime this past week? Anyway okay okay, I will do my duty! I understand why you want it, I totally do, for god's sake look at him. So hit the jump for the rest...

Everything You Ever Need To Know About Life...

... you can learn from:

Thorin: Fili, don't be a fool.
You belong with the Company.
Fili: I belong with my brother!

I asked you guys once who was the sexiest dwarf and Dean O'Gorman made a very respectable showing against such powerhouses as Richard Armitage and Aidan Turner, and it ain't tough to see why.

Dean's turning 38 today so a happy fuzzy day to him. What are your guys thoughts on The Hobbit movies anyway? I keep going and seeing them and enjoying them at the time but they hold very little sway over my imagination; certainly nothing like the Lord of the Rings movies did. I know the third movie's out in a couple of weeks but I haven't even gotten my ticket yet. I s'pose I'll go over the Xmas break. I did see the trailer before something the other day though and I could help but laugh at all the hide-a-gays so prominently displayed; it was like a CG cavalcade of glass closet cowardice.

Do Dump or Marry - We Three Dwarves

.
My previous Richard Armitage post has been getting a lot of traffic over the past few days thanks to The Hobbit, so here's some more him to nosh on.

He's a damn sexy dwarf for sure, but I preferred
Fili and Kili for my little people fetishizing personally.

So... well, as long as there are three,
let's do a do dump or marry!
There's Thorin (Richard Armitage)...
.

... Kili (Aidan Turner)...

... and Fili (Dean O'Gorman)...

Go.
