Today's Fanboy Delusion

Today I'd rather be...

... leaning to mount with Jonathan Bailey.

Happy Jurassic Jonny Day!

We're ignoring the recent news that Jonathan Bailey is taking some time off from acting to go work on his charity -- yes okay it's an amazing cause and an amazing act of selflessness and it will also make you commenters who kept accusing him of being over-exposed happy no doubt, but we prefer him directly in front of us at all times, personally. So we're ignoring it and directing everyone's attention to the fact that his Jurassic World movie is hitting blu-ray today! It's the best one since the movies were called Jurassic Park -- you can read my review of it right here -- so you should 100% grab yourselves a copy. Click here and you can make that happen! The internet is magic like that. And speaking of magic hit the jump for a couple more photos of Jonny being his gorgeous self...

Manuel Garcia-Rulfo Nine Times

When I shared the link to my Jurassic World: Rebirth review yesterday I did it alongside a nice photo of Jonathan Bailey because of course I did -- he's our reigning leading homosexual man right now! But now that that's out of the way let me step over to highlight one of the movie's smaller-roled snacks -- Mexican actor Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, who plays the daddy to a family who gets finds themselves in the unfortunate center of some scary dino-action. Manuel's been in several things I've seen before -- Widows, Murder on the Oreint Express, The Magificent Seven, A Man Called Otto (so many remakes!) -- but this was the first time I took note of him; actors almost always look great in the Jurassic movies since they're always sweaty and dirty and running around. We love sweaty and dirty and running around! And this was exactly that. So here is a 2024 photoshoot of him for GQ Mexico to lead us into another sweaty dirty Jurassic weekend; hit the jump for them all...

Everybody Do the Dinosaur

What, you thought I'd link to my review of the new Jurassic movie with a picture from the movie itself? Hell no! I'm reposting a photo of actor Jonathan Bailey -- see the rest of the shoot here -- because I know what the people want. As cute as he looks in his now branded "slutty little glasses" there's no denying those arms of his. (See also yesterday morning.) And it's kinda sad that the PR campaign for this movie is about to end with it hitting theaters today so let's enjoy this while we got it. Anyway... oh right, my review! Click here to read my Pajiba review of Jurassic World: Rebirth, which is all things considered totally fun. Yes it's a wee bit too cluttered, yes it's too long, and yes its characters do a lot of dumb things to keep the plot moving. I don't care. It's not Jurassic World: Dominion, which was so bad I considered it an assault on me personally, so I left the theater this time around pretty happy and satisfied. Director Gareth Edwards crushes a couple of action scenes, and... did I mention Jonathan Bailey? I really should. Just once.

Just Call Him Jurassic Sir

If I thought the hits were coming hard and fast yesterday I can't even keep up today -- it's barely 11am and we've already has Aaron Taylor-Johnson in just a pair of leather pants playing with a knife in bed and Morgan Spector in a sheer tank top talking about bottoming. And now we've got Jonathan Bailey rocking a lot more leather -- I guess leather is 2025's fetish-wear du jour -- for THR where he's talking his big man action role in the new Jurassic Park movie.

Phew! I haven't been this worn out this early in the day since Pride Weekend 2001. Aaaaanyway no I haven't read the interview yet but I'll go do that once I've finished posting the photos -- of course that bit me in the bum on that Morgan Spector post because I only realized he spent a portion of it talking about bottoming after I'd done my post. Oh well! The world moves too fast sometimes, even for Morgan Spector bottoming. How many times can I say that phrase? I just like saying it. "Morgan Spector bottoming." Fuck "Cellar Door." Ahem. We're here for Jonny! Hit the jump for more...

Good Morning, World

I had something else planned for our last "Good Morning, World" post of the week this week but when I woke up this morning and opened my phone the first thing social media greeted me with was Jonathan Bailey strutting around in straight boy drag -- plus a skirt! -- for GQ and voila, our fortunes were altered. Doesn't this shoot feel like a somewhat purposeful choice though? To make him come off just a little itty bit butcher as he becomes the leading man in an enormous Hollywood franchise? But then...

... there are also shots like this and I feel as if I should rein in that talk. Not that nominally hetersexual menfolk a la Oscar Isaac and Morgan Spector haven't been rocking the skirt lately as well. Just shots like this...

... feel like such a sudden put-on to me. He's like chugging beer and eating chips in the video -- we're more than halfway to Tradie Porn here. Yes I might be American but I still gleefully know what Tradie Porn is thank you very much. And I think Jonathan certainly knows what it is as well. I don't know. It's early and I'm trying to think too much. Let's just look at the pictures! Hit the jump to just look at the pictures...

Jonny Inherits The Earth

I have mainly given up watching trailers altogether now -- I definitely didn't watch the one for the new Final Destination movie that dropped this week because when you're a fan as psychotic for a franchise as I am for that one there's no need. (And who else is about to do a full FD rewatch? I am so on that!) Anyway I didn't even bother opening the email I got this morning with the first trailer for the new Jurassic Park movie either. Excuse me, Jurassic World -- I really prefer using the Park nomenclature; y'all don't mind if I stick with that right? There's like half an hour of good content in the full World trilogy and I feel as if they'd be smart to return to the Park name honestly. Give us some hope this won't be more crappy nonsense! That said I saw some photos... okay I saw THIS photo:

I hope they kiss #JurassicWorldRebirth

... and I decided I should post about it because Jonny. And while yes it's true that Jonny didn't really end up making Wicked any more watchable for me, that (shrieking musical nonsense) was always going to be a steep hill for me to climb. A dinosaur movie with his taut biceps and shoulders on constant display? A far easier sell! It even looks like they get him into a harness and we all doubtlessly remember how hot today's It Boy Alessandro Nivola made that spectacle in his Jurassic turn! (Bring back Billy!)

Anyway I didn't technically "watch" this trailer, I just went through it to make these gifs with the sound off, but the special effects look great, the colors are brighter than I recall the last couple movies looking -- I have all of my appendages crossed and knotted that this will be a good Jurassic movie. There is no reason for them to not be able to make good movies out of this material! It should be so simple! (How they fucked up so badly having all three of the original film's stars in the last one I will never ever be able to comprehend.) Here is the trailer:

Jurassic World: Rebirth is out on July 2nd.
Oh and here is the pretty standard poster:

Pic of the Day

We now here have a second photo of Jonathan Bailey in the forthcoming Jurassic Park film titled Jurassic World: Rebirth -- see the first even bicep-ier one here -- and we're continuing on with the theme of "Jonathan Bailey is going to be so hot in this movie fighting dinosaurs that I am going to drop dead right there in the theater" I see. Here below is the full picture which also has his leading lady one Miss ScarJo included:

This movie is coming to us from director Gareth Edwards, possibly an excellent choice given his Godzilla movie mostly rules and Rogue One is fun (save its leading lady who I just cannot with) and I did love his breathtrough film Monsters back in the day -- the first time we saw Scoot! Kinda weird that Edwards hasn't worked with Scoot again, now that I think of it. Scoot would be great in a Jurassic Park movie. Wonder if anything happened between them. Not, like, sexy -- just negative. Anyway JWR is out on July 2nd making it one of the very few things we have to look forward to, like ever. Optimism! Oh and here's a picture I seem to've missed which I've just spotted on the film's IMDb page -- and yes you should be noting those bulging veins in Jonny's forearm because Cinema:

Pic of the Day

Today has gifted us with a brand new photo of Jonathan Bailey in the next Jurassic Park -- excuse me, Jurassic World -- film, and looking at the way that shirt is hugging those shoulders and biceps of his has me thinking that Jonny is coming for Alessandro Nivola's crown as the The Hottest Dude in Jurassic Land. (Sorry fans but Chris Pratt has been nulled and voided for becoming the king of the douchebags.) I guess we will find out on July 2nd if Jonny is able to flex and woo the Velociraptors so hard that they stop rampaging with hearts in their eyes. or if he has to use those guns for sexy violence instead! Jonathan Bailey Five Times

There's a nice little photoshoot and a chat with our boy Jonny Bailey at Backstage magazine -- he talks getting intimate with Matt Bomer, he talks about fighting dinos from the set of the next Jurassic movie, but most important of all he says this:

"I think I’ve always been quite naughty."

What did we do to deserve this man?
Hit the jump for the entire shoot...

Jurassic Jonny

I love this news -- even though it's not technically "news" but just a rumor that I have seen going around -- because it gives me an excuse to post that  photo of Jonathan Bailey showing off some impressive guns while recently working out. Not that we need an excuse. But an excuse makes us feel better about ourselves, and gives us something to actually say instead of whatever lame equivalent of the drool emoji I can conjure up. So! There is a rumor going round that Jonny's role in the new Jurassic World movie (which we already told you about here) will see him playing the adult version of the character of Timmy from the first film. (And the second, the Jurassic nerd in me must point out, where actor Joe Mazzello had a cameo.)

The funny thing to me is that Bailey is actually slightly too young for the part, since he was only five when the original Jurassic Park came out! Christ that makes me feel ancient. Anyway this rumor also states that Scarlett Johannson, who's also been cast in the new movie, is playing the grown up Lex. We know nothing about the movie's plot yet except that unlike previous films that it's not set in one location, but will film all over the world -- notably one of those locations is the U.K., which is of course where Jurassic Park creator  John Hammond (Richard Attenborough) was from, and Lex and Timmy are his grandkids... I know it's a reach. But I like the idea. And Jonny and ScarJo are good casting for the kids, even if poor Joe Mazzello (who still acts) has to be a little bit annoyed about not getting to return to his most famous role because he didn't grow up to be as hot as Jonathan Bailey. Join the club, Joe! We all exist in Jonny's shadow.

Jonny Vs The Dinosaurs

This was rumored a couple of weeks ago but Jonny Bailey's gone and announced it himself -- he is starring in the next Jurassic Park movie! If you're anything like me the last few Jurassic World movies really killed your enthusiasm for the franchise -- especially that last one which somehow wasted having Sam Neill and Laura Dern and Jeff Goldblum reunited -- and I didn't think they'd get me back on-board with another Jurassic movie. That coming from a person whose entire cinemania derives from the original Jurassic Park movie says something! But then they went and hired Godzilla director Gareth Edwards and I was like... "Well, maybe." But Jonny seals the deal -- we must support our gays! One truly does feel like Bailey maybe can really become the first out gay blockbuster leading man right now -- and since I have very little interest in Wicked this is my ticket!

5 Off My Head - Holiday Heavy Hitters

Per usual I did nothing over the break but watch movie upon movie upon movie. (I also binged the final season of His Dark Materials and the full run of Fleischman is in Trouble -- the latter is astonishing and is deeply recommended; it's the best thing I watched over break, period.) But what else am I supposed to do, leave the house? Interact with people? Please. Who you talkin' to? Anyway you can as ever keep track of my watching pursuits by following me on my Letterboxd, but because I'm banging my head against the wall today trying to get myself back into the state of writing mood, let's make a list! Those are fucking easy.

The 5 Best First-Watch Movies
I Watched Over My Winter Vacation

Return to Seoul
(2022) -- I hate that I don't have the time or the place to write a proper review for this one because it deserves all of that effort -- maybe if/when I get to my "Best of 2022" list we'll be talking it properly. Just know it's very much worth seeing out, and it's literally mind-blowing that this is the first performance from actress Park Ji-Min, who gives one of the great performances of the year here. I think this is still being rolled out? It's not streaming anywhere yet? So find it when you can. Maybe once it hits streaming I will write more. A real rewarding little marvel of a character piece.

Water Drops on Burning Rocks (2000) -- This is one I always felt ashamed to admit I'd never seen when the subject came up, but that shame grew into a panic when Francois Ozon's Peter Von Kant (reviewed here) came out earlier this year -- knowing that Ozon's very first film was also deeply entrenched in Fassbinder-dom (it was based on an un-produced play by RWF) I knew I'd best hop on it already before I'd dashed all my reputation to pieces. You can see chunks of other finished Fassbinder products herein -- it especially made me think of Fox and His Friends and In a Year of Thirteen Moons, although it's far less devastating than either of those movies. There's a lightness and a broadness to this that's definitely more Ozon's than it is Rainer's, but as ever the place where those two minds meet is an utter delight to me.

10 Rillington Place (1971) -- A truly fucked up true-crime serial killer story about the British murderer John Christie, who strangled a bunch of people and buried them in the walls and back-yard of his flat. Directed by Richard Fleischer, the man behind Red Sonja and Soylent Green, this movie in now way shies away from the awfulness of its story and vibe, especially in its phenomenally unsettling lead performance by Sir Richard Attenborough as Christie -- I will never ever be able to watch Jurassic Park the same way again.

Be My Cat: A Film For Anne (2014) -- I really wanted to watch a found footage horror film that I'd never seen before a couple of days ago, so I googled around and saw this movie, which I had never even heard of before, on a list of best ones. Thankfully it is on Tubi (sidenote: literally everything is on Tubi) and holy f'ing hell y'all this movie is insane. I knew the basic premise going in but am loathe to give it away if you'd prefer to watch something unspoiled, and I think this would reward that instinct. So just trust me -- if you're ever looking for a new spin on found-footage and are cool with staring into the abyss of wackadoodle obsession, have I got a thing for you.

Dot Com For Murder (2002) -- Make no mistake, this movie is absolutely fucking awful. Just wildly inept on every level. And that is of course the appeal -- I have no doubt that's why Arrow is putting out a fancy blu-ray of it on February 7th (pick up your copy right here!) and that's what finally put this gem before me, as I was sent a screener. Of course the Gaylords of Darkness, the interweb's premiere nonsense podcast, have been hyping this movie for years now -- I'm happy to say they were right to obsess. It's ecstatic trash. Up there in the pantheon of so-bad-they're-greats. Get drunk, get very very drunk, and enjoy ye nude internet fingers for yourself!

13 Toilets of Halloween #4

Does anyone else think of Michael Myers when the T-Rex
does that little head-tilt in the first Jurassic Park movie?

I always do, but then I'm weird. So I feel as if I should ask. Anyway I wouldn't put it past the animators and technicians who brought the T-Rex to life to have done that on purpose -- that movie is filled with so much character when it comes to all of the animals (the impatient claw-tapping velociraptor!) that they all feel all the realer.

Of course now, much like Michael Myers' head-tilt, they feel the need to do the same damned things every time -- they had one of the raptors tapping its toe in the latest Jurassic World abortion and all I could do is groan. We don't need you to copy things, we need you to make new interesting choices dammit! I digress -- we're here to talk about that lawyer getting eaten by that Tyrannosaur on that toilet!

But then because of course I have I have already done this scene as one of my "Ways Not To Die" posts (and I did it like fourteen years ago -- good grief I have been blogging this site for-literal-ever) so maybe you should check that out. I do find it crazy how on the eve of this film's 30th anniversary the special-effects still look perfect though -- everything having to do with the T-Rex in the first film looks better than literally anything that came after it in any of the other Jurassic movies. It's astonishing. In related news there's a massive new book about Phil Tippett, the special-effects legend behind the Jurassic dinos and the Starship Trooper bugs and the Robocops and the Star Wars, that's coming out in November -- I have already pre-ordered my copy! You should too! Or else...

And click here for all of the "Toilets of Halloween" so far!

Good Morning, World

Today we wish a happy 50th birthday to one of the movies great under-appreciated talents and sexpots Alessandro Nivola, long-time MNPP fave -- if you don't believe us spend a year skipping back through our Alessandro Nivola Archives! They are thorough, perhaps excessively so. Seems like the right time to share a couple of never-before-posted gifs from Laurel Canyon anyway, which alongside Jurassic Park III the year before made up "The Moment I Fell For..." Alessandro. Who didn't? In related news Laurel Canyon just turned 20 this year -- think it's time for a revisit! There was actually Alessandro news yesterday -- he's going to co-star with the great André Holland in an Apple+ series called The Big Cigar and yes they are totally trying to bait me with that title.  The series is about the Black Panther Huey Newton (Holland) escaping to Cuba with help from Easy Rider producer Bert Schneider (Nivola), and yeah that sounds like a lot of story to tell! Very excited for that, and for the several other projects that Nivola's got lined up too. (Thankfully for someone so under-appreciated he works lots.) Happy birthday!

The Lost Summer Boys

I went looking for photos of Lost Illusions actors Vincent Lacoste and Benjamin Voisin because that César-winning movie -- I shared the trailer right here -- is out this weekend here in NYC (at Film Forum) and in L.A. (at the Royal) as well. But instead I found the above image (via) of a bearded Voisin with his Summer of 85 co-star Félix Lefebvre and... uhhhh... obviously I had to take the bait. Man I loved Summer of 85 -- I wrote up thoughts back when at this link -- y'all have seen that by now right? I think it's one of Ozon's best and sexiest films, which is saying plenty obviously. (And coincidentally Amazon has the blu-ray on sale for 24 bucks right now!) Anyway I can't speak to Lost Illusions yet because I haven't had a chance to watch it yet but by all accounts it's a very good movie, so if you're in the neighborhood clearly go stare at the cute French boys! What better is there to possibly do? The Jurassic movie blows! Here's your alternative -- be adventurous, with the French boys.

Chomp Goes The Bronto

(pic via) So as detailed briefly on Monday (and several hundred other times over these many years) I fancy myself a Jurassic Park nerd from way back. Saw the original several gajillion times, et cetera et cetera. That said I've been exceptionally depressed and defeated by the most recently trilogy of World movies, and I am sad to report that that remains the case with the new movie, original trio of actors be darned -- click on over to Pajiba to read my exceptionally unhappy thoughts about Jurassic World Dominion, which hits theaters tomorrow. Oh well! We'll always have the first movie. And I suppose it could have been worse -- I could have been literally murdered by a Tyrannosaur Rex! There is that.

Mamoudou Athie Three Times

My review of the new Jurassic World movie will be up at Pajiba in a little bit and I will link to it then, but before that hits do take a moment to appreciate these photos (via) of one of the cast's new additions, actor Mamoudou Athie, who I hope people will be walking out of the film with a crush on -- dude is so frigging adorable. I'm not sure when he first registered for me -- maybe in his role opposite Kristen Stewart in the criminally underrated horror flick Underwater? I never watched The Get Down, the Netflix show he was on, but he had definitely registered by the time of his other Netflix series Archive 81 -- RIP Archive 81! -- because I posted photos of him during the time I was bingeing that series. Anyway he looks super cute in the new Jurassic movie and I hope we continue seeing much more of Mr. Athie!

The Birthday Beggar-saurus

Yes that is a photo of a fifteen-year-old me (and my cousin) in the year 1993 at Universal Studios Orlando being happily terrorized by Jurassic Park's Tyrannosaur Rex -- I hadn't even seen the movie yet at that point but it was all I cared about, and once it came out a few weeks later I went and saw it ten times in the theater that summer (which remained my personal record until Call Me By Your Name came out). Anyway I post it because that hibernating dino-nerd woke up in my belly something hard this morning when I realized I am seeing the new Jurassic movie tonight -- Jurassic World: Dominion hits theaters this weekend and you can watch the trailer here and you can expect my review in a couple of days. Until this morning I had low expectations, but that dino-nerd in my belly is making me super excited anyway! If nothing else...

... it'll be a treat seeing Laura Dern and Sam Neill and Jeff Goldblum all reunited for the first time since the original movie. I'm really hoping that Dern side-eyes Chris Pratt right off a cliff, I am!

But wait! Jurassic Park nonsense is not the only reason I'm posting right now -- speaking of looking backwards in the rearview mirror that says "Objects in mirror are closer than they appear" or whatever, I realized over the weekend that I forgot to mark MNPP's birthday last week! I started blogging this site on June 2nd 2005, meaning we just turned seventeen! We're like that Janis Ian song now! Weird to think I have been blogging here longer than I had been alive in that top photo? Ergh best not fall down that wormhole. Anyway thanks to everybody for reading! And as I do every blog birthday I'll now put on my lil' beggar's cap and say -- hey, if you enjoy what I do here, why not toss us a penny or two?

You can donate right here. Or in
the right-hand column there is a link too.
Thanks y'all!
