Feeling the Fashionistas

.
Last week's Devil Wears Prada edition of our "Beauty vs Beast" poll at The Film Experience was such a good time we've rolled it over and opened it up (y'all are familiar with that concept) for two more characters from the flick -- click on over to vote! And then if you need more Stanley Tucci in your life while you're thinking about him click here for a gratuitous post we did back in the day. It's a perfectly natural reaction.

Hire The Smart Fat Girl

.
This week's "Beauty vs Beast" at The Film Experience is spackling
a pretty decent sized hole in our record -- we've never faced down
the gals of The Devil Wears Prada before? For really?

Monty Doesn't Like To Watch

.
One of my favorite celeb-related photo-shoots ever created is the one by J.R. Eyerman for LIFE Magazine in 1949, of Montgomery Clift sitting in a movie theater and watching himself act on-screen in William Wyler's film The Heiress -- the two you see here get across how hilariously uncomfortable the experience was for him, but there are even more at this link. (I'm especially particular to this one but I couldn't find it without the watermark.) I also like how porny they feel, like him and that mustachioed dude are about to go at it, but that's just bonus. Anyway The Heiress is today's subject du jour for our "Beauty vs Beast" poll at The Film Experience so click on over, as it's his co-star Olivia de Havilland's 103rd birthday, wowza!

We Don't Deserve Her

.
Twas little miss Meryl's 70th birthday this past weekend and so in her honor we've devoted this week's "Beauty vs Beast" over at The Film Experience to her two dalliances with lesbianism (not counting that kiss with Cher in Silkwood it's just the two, right?) -- click on over to vote! In related news... actually a couple of things. One, can I just say that it's incredibly difficult to make it through a Monday each week without having seen the previous night's Big Little Lies? By the time I sit down to it tonight I'll have been inundated and influenced by countless memes -- so much screaming Laura Dern. That said, without spoiling last night's please, how are we feeling about BLL so far this year?
.
.
In other Meryl news if you're in New York the gayest thing you can do this Pride Week this side of sucking cock is go to the above mentioned screening tonight -- I am sure it'll be a hoot and a half. Two hoots, even. Happy birthday, queen.

Twas Beauty Killed the Eve

.
This week's edition of "Beauty vs Beast" is tackling the terrible two-some at the black heart of Phoebe Waller-Bridge's series Killing Eve, which just finished up its second season a couple weeks ago with a bit of a bang. Click on over to The Film Experience to vote, and then maybe you can come back here and tell me in the comments what you thought of the second season, you know, if you feel up to it after all of that effort.

We'll Be Saying Goodbye To Fassbinder Forever

.
It's a sad day today as we mark the 37th anniversary of Rainer Werner Fassbinder's death -- he's now been dead as long as he was alive. Still the man created so much in his 37 years of life that we've hardly exhausted it all in his 37 years of death, and I doubt we ever will. Over at The Film Experience today I'm using his final film, the kaleidoscopicalllly queer Querelle, for this week's edition of "Beauty vs Beast" so click on over to vote. And after you do that I recommend you skim through our Querelle archives because hot damn we have posted a lot on this film over the years...

Let's Do the Tim Curry Again

.
In honor of Pride Month I'm going to be celebrating some of my favorite gay movies with this month's "Beauty vs Beast" polls over at The Film Experience, starting today with the camp horror fantasia of the Rocky Horror Picture Show -- click on over to cast your vote! And let me add here that I have never seen Rocky Horror in the theater as an interactive experience. Have you? Don't they molest virgins? I could never.

Say We're Only Dreamin'

.
Besides the fact that the two actors that Guy Ritchie cast to play Aladdin (see here) and Jafar (see here) are hella hot I am trying to ignore his live-action movie version coming out this weekend because god, it looks bad. Still I love the original Disney film so I'm using this week's "Beauty vs Beast" to give that some love -- click on over to The Film Experience to cast your vote between one of the mouse house's hottest heroes and one of their most nefarious, not to mention queer, villains. And do keep in mind my embargo on seeing the film flies right out the window the second y'all tell me Billy Magnussen wears any costume that is even a single degree too tight.

Celebrating Sofia Some

.
Tomorrow is Sofia Coppola's birthday, and so today I am sending you over to The Film Experience for today's Sofia-centric "Beauty vs Beast" poll, tackling her last movie the most excellent remake of The Beguiled with Colin Farrell and Nicole Kidman. I find this film vastly underrated! (Here is my review of it.)

Snail on a Strait Razor

.
I am trying to decide whether I should re-watch Apocalypse Now this week since it's turning 40 on Friday, or if I should wait until Coppola releases his so-called "Final Cut" in theaters and on blu-ray in August. It's been a long time since I've watched it start to finish -- to be honest I'm not the biggest fan, but I've never really been able to suss out why not. It's not a movie that's particularly inspired me either way, towards hate or devotion. And as a person who loves many of Francis Ford Coppola's films, I find that indifference strange! It certainly should move me one way or the other. Anyway while I sort that out, or while I don't, why don't y'all head over to The Film Experience where I set aside this indifference and use this week's anniversary to "Beauty vs Beast" the thing.

Washing Avengers Cum Off

.
.
I don't know if you guys know this but there's a new Marvel Superhero movie out this weekend! You're welcome! You might want to quick check on tickets though... like, don't wait to read this sentence, go now. The rest of us we should click on over to The Film Experience where this week's edition of our "Beauty vs Beast" poll is facing down the big purple pariah seen above, pomegranate cheeks in the Titian breeze, with a certain enthusiastically side-burned Star-Lord. Hashtag Washing Avengers Cum off indeed...

Everything You Ever Need To Know About Life...

... you can learn from:

Serial Mom (1994)

Beverly: Officers, life doesn't have to be ugly. See,
look at the birds out there. Listen to their call:
"Oo-ee! Oo-ee! Oo-ee! Oo-ee! Oo-ee!"

Is it weird that nearly every time I walk into the kitchen of my apartment I get Beverly Sutphin's bird-song stuck in my head? It happens at least three times a week, and I swear to you that I'm not exaggerating. Just ask my exasperated boyfriend.

Anyway, my mild psychoses aside, Serial Mom turns 25 this week! It was released on April 13th 1994 -- did you see it on its original run? It was, for like many of my generation, my introduction to John Waters -- I saw it well before I really knew who he was and I was scandalized, I tell you, scandalized! The "Sun'll Come Out"  dog shrimping scene left a scar. If I'd known what John had done earlier in his career poor innocent little me would have fainted.

And since MoMA is screening Female Trouble in a couple of days I decided to give this week's "Beauty vs Beast" at The Film Experience over to this double dose of Dreamlanders -- click on over to vote your Mom of the Week. (And don't forget that John has a new book coming out next month!!!)

Halt and Catch Terminators

.
A happy 32 to the great and greater by the minute Mackenzie Davis -- very soon we'll see her fighting a goddamned Terminator, you guys! I mean sure Lee Pace kind of played his character in Halt and Catch Fire like that but I mean a real killer robot opposite Linda Hamilton and shit. That's nuts. Anyway today's "Beauty vs Beast" over at The Film Experience is in her celebratory honor today so click on over for some Tully love. And in summation...

A Bum For All Seasons

.
Even though I haven't seen the latter yet the one-two-punch of the utterly ridiculous Serenity (my review here) and this week's Harmony Korine film The Beach Bum is making me reconsider my thickly developed distaste for Matthew McConaughey. Before 2013 I was usually fine with him (he's very funny in Magic Mike) but that Dallas Buyers Oscar season really curdled my opinion and it hasn't rebounded. (Ughhh, True Detective.) But Serenity was so hysterically bad it was admirable, and The Beach Bum looks like a thing I might enjoy, and so here we are. Here we are looking back at Korine's last film, that is, with this week's "Beauty vs Beast" over at The Film Experience. Look at my shit!!!

In Memory of You

.
This week's banner is marking an especially special occasion! Tomorrow marks the 15th anniversary of our beloved Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, which hit theaters on March 18th 2004 and immediately became one of our forever favorites. We've watched it dozens of times since then, and our affection for the twisty romance between Joel and Clementine only deepens with age. Click on over to The Film Experience where we're zooming in on a pair of smaller but no less vital performances in the movie.

I See You, Jamie Bell

.
Isn't that photo just Jamie Bell in a nutshell, always willing to stand back a little and let his co-stars shine -- well not today slash this week if I can do anything about it, Mr. Bell! (Psst, I can't.) Jamie's turning 33 on Thursday and so this week's "Beauty vs Beast" at The Film Experience is in his honor. Well sort of. Since if I had to wager I'd wager that he will probably lose the poll. But I'm usually wrong about everything, so why not click over and make me wrong again? Jamie deserves it!

Girls! Girls! Girls!

.
Dunno if you know this but Brie Larson has a Marvel Superhero movie called Captain Marvel out this weekend and I know, I know. We already had Wonder Woman. When will this Lady Movie Madness end? Next thing you know women will be wanting to vote, or pee standing up! The nerve! Make me a sammich, mommy! My diaper is full! Et cetera et cetera. In big boy news this week's "Beauty vs Beast" is live over at The Film Experience -- we're looking back Edgar Wright's nearly-a-decade-old stills-brillz comic adaptation Scott Pilgrim vs the World and facing down two of Scott's loves. Click over to vote!

My Favourite Fops

.
Nothing but respect for my Best Supporting Actor Oscar winner and his two- fellow nominees! Oh wait. Right. Well we can pretend. We're great at denial -- just ask every boyfriend we've ever had! On that note head over to The Film Experience where this week's Oscar-flavored edition of "Beauty vs Beast" is keeping it real real simple with pretty boys in pretty suits, the end.

Miss Cleo Regrets

.
I don't think it's a spoiler for our forthcoming (one of these days) Golden Trouser awards to let on that Alfonso Cuarón ROMA is my favorite film of the year -- I've said as much a few times already, and rather stridently at that!
.

Here's my original review. Anyway we are tackling this my favorite film of 2018 for this week's edition of our "Beauty vs Beast" poll over at The Film Experience, so click on over to choose between its two Oscar nominated performances. Go on. Click I said!
