From KillianF: 28mm medieval horse and cart (20 points)

 Hello all,

As is becoming slightly standard practice, I have not completed exactly what I set out to for this week. A handful of fantasy miniatures are tantalisingly close to finishing, but I will have to save them for next week's post.

I did however finish a medieval cart from Medbury Miniatures. This is again an STL printed by me. It's a really good kit that gives loads of options for baggage. I went with relatively nodescript options, several bundles of hay, a barrel and a large bundle covered in cloth. I can then argue that anything could be under it.

The backdrop is by Jon Hodgson, downloaded from his Patreon and displayed on a standard computer monitor. Works well enough to create a scene.

I had to pull up a load of tufts as I initially placed some tall ones in the middle of the base. These got repositioned to the edge to create the impression of a verge either side of a cart track.

I painted the driver slightly brighter than I first intended. He adds colour right in the centre and prevents it from looking entirely brown.

The cart itself was sprayed Halfords Camo Brown, then drybrushed with some different brown shades up to a bone white, and then washed with AK Matte Varnish and Vallejo Game Colour Sepia and Smoky Inks.

This guy will see use in Five Leagues from the Borderlands and likely any number of medieval skirmish games that require a cart to escort, destroy or loot. It could also work as a background piece in larger battle games like Midgard. Mainly though, it's a cool model I wanted to paint for a bit of variation.

Points:
1x 28mm vehicle: 20

Total: 20 points

Thanks,

Killian

From DaveD. That’s a fine piece . Interesting to know it’s a 3d piece .the tufts at the  side have given the effect you wanted nicely .

From SimonG: 28mm HYW Baggage Train for the Snowlord's Treasury (75 points)

As my offering in the Snowlord's Treasury I present an Impetus baggage train stand as part of my Hundred Years War project. Nominally this is the English train but there is nothing to make it specifically so and it could be swapped with my similar French stand completed earlier this year.

Overall it's a small vignette comprising Perry metals (the mounted rich gentleman), Front Rank (the carts, horses and attendants) and Wargames Foundry (the other two standing figures). WF are notably smaller in scale than the others but still within the range of human stature for a vignette like this.

What I like about this is how well the different personalities came across. From the imperious treasurer himself to the quartermaster checking off the delivery (and no doubt benefiting from some kick backs if his ermine hat and gold rings are anything to go by). I see the other guy behind him as his bodyguard.

Technically it was mostly straightforward if a lot to work with in an enclosed space and a lot to assemble (for me). I liked adding rope ties to the wooden traces to the large cart -- these are simple thread knots superglued over at the end -- synthetic button thread is great stuff to work with and behaves very well with superglue, drying quickly and easy to trim. I added this right at the end and gave it a quick stain for colour.

There are lots of other hidden details that might be actually impossible to see now it's all assembled -- especially the gold rings on the two wealthy figures (a black line with a gold line within it, much easier than trying to outline a gold line, duh!). I also deviated from my usual basing by adding the muddy track but that seemed to suit the vignette.

Anyway I think that's about 75 points -- 20 for the challenge, 15 for three 28mm foot, 20 for two 28mm mounted and lets count the two carts as one 28mm vehicle for a final 20. Onwards to the Lair of the Great Beast and I have something substantial on the go for that!

A lovely job indeed Simon! The posing is spot on and really brings them all together. Take a 5 point bonus

From: RusselG - Over the finish line (67 points)

For the first time ever I have beaten my pre-challenge total (pending judges decision).

So a very happy painter i am indeed.

Here are my entries to push me over total.

The first one is this

These are 6mm scale strips of trees to represent an orchard, they are from Baggage train and are very nice little castings in resin. These have sat around in a base colour of dark green for a couple of years, so now was the time to finish them. Easy enough, 2 levels of over-brushing on the trees in lighter shades of green, and the same on the base using brown.
6mm viking leader by Baccus for scale purpose only.

I was not sure how to score these, so if the judges are happy with it, I will take a point for all 5 strips.

Next are 2 panzer 4 tanks from Battlefront, both nice sculpts and very detailed, these are the older models made from resin and metal.

Both have sat neglected as my existing painted panzer 4's are from forged in battle, and are slightly different in scale, however they can now join the ranks.
2 x 15mm vehicles = 12 pts

Okay, being a bit cheeky with this one, I present a single 15mm door gunner,by Battlefront.

I had painted the loach around a year ago, and had left the door off with the intention of fitting the door gunner model that came with it. I found him in a drawer still naked metal on the sprue.
Here he is in all his glory, strapped into the chopper.
1 x 15mm infantry = 2 pts

Next are a pair of Cobra gunships also by Battlefront, these are the old models made from resin but with the new plastic blades.

These are nice models although the new plastic model looks an awful lot easier to build and probably less prone to damage, a simple enough painting experience but the sheer amount of decals to be arranged is a chore, but worth the effort.
2 x 15mm vehicles = 12pts

Now these two have been used in many games and had been never taken past a basic green base coat.
Both were extras that came with the initial Vietnam forces from Battlefront through Wargames Illustrated back in the day.

I can't decide if they fall under scenery or vehicles, so as it seems fair and would be less in points I have decided on vehicle.
2 x 15mm vehicle = 12 points

And finally, the simplest of the lot, 4 Hetzer tank destroyers from Forged in battle. As usual very nice sculpt and casting, easy to paint.

I have just noticed that I think I have glued the MG in the wrong place and have forgotten to paint the handles on the shovels, may have to change that.
4 x 15mm vehicles = 24 pts

So to sum up,
1 point for some trees
12 pts for 2 panzer 4
2 pts for a door gunner
12 pts for 2 Cobras
12 pts for 2 Hueys
24 pts for 4 Hetzer's

which I think is 63 points.

Thank you all for looking and I hope you have managed to get to your personal challenge totals.

Congrats Russel with gaining your points target, I know I am still way off from mine so well done to you dear sir! Regarding the points: I will award you 1 point each for the strips of trees so you'll be getting 67 points. Those choppers are really ace! I had a big laugh with the Batman logo on the door gunners chopper which looks particularly great. The Huey objective markers are full vehicles in themselves, so you've concluded quite rightly that they will be scored as such.

Great entry Russel, you still have time to up your target and get some more of this lovely stuff out there!

From RobH: Ships of the Desert (32 Points)

I have worked on this submission since the start of the challenge. It was the constant project sitting on my painting desk. A dab of paint here, another dab there. The figures are based as two DBA nomadic camps and another two baggage/transport for WRG style games.

The rider I picked out of my spare box and added him instead of the baggage for one of the camel figures. The foot figure was previously painted and pulled out of the same spare figure box. It does not count towards my painting total.  Looking at scoring 8 x 15mm camels with baggage and a sole rider.

Oh we love ourselves some camels in this here Challenge. These might have taken you a ltitle while, here and there, but are fine example of Bactrians, with their very colourful loads.I particularly like that they camels' coats are varied in colour, as you often see whole squadrons of mounted troops on mounts of just one or two shades (something I'm guilty of too, I'll admit).

I'll score these camels, loads singleton rider as 8 cavalry, so a tidy 32 points for your baggage humps!
