From JezT - 28mm Hungarian Hussars circa 1526 (91 points)

 Hi All 

Exciting second post as this is creating a new Basic Impetus army option for me - Hungarian Renaissance, specifically aiming for basing this around the Battle of Mohacs 1526 when they took on the Ottomans and got totally wiped out. 

My brother Matt is taking up with the Ottomans and bought figures from TAG (we might see some this Challenge - no pressure Matt but stop painting fantasy and get on with these). I get to be the mad impetuous Hungarians, but was quite pleased as I already had suitable Landsknecht type infantry and Men at Arms cavalry, so really just needed the specialist Hungarian Hussar light cavalry options. 

After searching I eventually decided upon Warlord figures and bizarrely these are actually sold as Ottoman Turks.  I personally think they looked more European and critically for me they had the "signature" shooting bow pose, with curved shields and plums that I wanted. So I ended up with 3 packs and a total of 9 mounted to paint up to create 3 light cavalry bases. 

First up is the Hussar light cavalry (in Basic Impetus parlance VBU 4/1), these can shoot and also charge in with lance. 

Then I have two more bases of light cavalry bowmen, as these are more specifically skirmish cavalry shooting only (in Basic Impetus VBU 3/0), I decided on two figures per base and added on extra bows, so every model looks like an archer. 

With the final two figures, I knew a definitely need a Hungarian themed commander figure.

There are weapons and a horse swap here - think the horse is an old Redoubt sculpt

As I got rid of the original sword, for accuracy felt needed to add in a new sword pommel

Think red and white are key Hungarian colours 

Finally for the last figure I decided to base them on a sabot base as a standard bearer so they can mix with my existing Gendarmes and make a fully Hungarian Men At Arms unit. 

Pleased with sabot base in action and now touching up more of my my older Gendarme figures.

So in total 9 mounted should be 90 points.

Nice looking Hungarians here Jez! Good idea to sabot-base these models as it'll let you use them fir skirmish games as well. Good work on the flags and shield also - I'll chuck in another point for those. Ninety-one for your tally!

From RayR: Retreat from Moscow - The Stragglers (120 points)

  

The citizens of Moscow had been ordered to evacuate by the Russian troops. All they left behind was a little food, plenty of alcohol, and Moscow in flames. While the French troops pillaged the empty city, Napoleon waited for Alexander I to surrender. Napoleon and his forces waited in Moscow for over a month, but no offer for peace came. By 19th October, the cold had begun to set in, and Napoleon was forced to move from Moscow.

The Grand Army was devastated having to retreat along the invasion route; order broke down, and nearly over half the force that set out from Moscow became stragglers, or those who not only did not keep up with the body of the army, but were not in any shape for combat, these either died from disease, small battles, or being exposed to the harsh Russian winter.

Throughout November the humiliating realities of Napoleon’s losses were exposed to the world. On 5th December, amid rumours of a potential coup, Napoleon left his devastated army. Just over a week later, what was left of Napoleon’s grand army straggled back over the Neman River.

Most of the Straggler figures are from the great range sold by Perry Miniatures.

Packs FN172, FN173 and FN175

This unit is the odd one out, having 2 figures from Perry's pack FN194 Scavengers and 4 Warlord plastic figures, Now of course all these figures in all three units will be interchangeable.

In this post there are 24 x 25mm figures, so that makes a grand total of 120 points, my largest points total for an entry so far this Challenge!!

TeemuL: Ray is warming up, you better be prepared Lee! What a wonderful and wonderfully varied entry again, Ray. Sometimes one might think, that painting unit after unit of Napoleonics might get boring, same uniform with little detail changes one unit after another, but you have lots of variation inside one unit! I guess the basing and frozing effect still tie the units together and they all look like part of the same organization. Well deserved 120 points.

From BobV: 28mm Chindits (90 Points)

 Happy Wednesday Everyone,

My continuing goal for this challenge is to paint as much of my existing lead as possible without buying anything new (we'll see how that turns out). As I was putting last week's winter soldiers and paratroops in storage, I came across an unpainted squad of Chindits. I quickly realized that these were the last of my unpainted 28mm minis from WW2. I decided that I had  to put my Baron's War mini's on the backburner and finish these up to complete the era.

There are 18 members of the squad including the mule. They are Warlord Miniatures, black primed and painted with a mix of Vallejo and Army Painter acrylics.

I tried to bump up the lighting in this one. I am a complete amateur in photography so I decided to just throw as much light as I could at the figures before taking the pics. I think the light is bit better this week.

For points I am claiming 18 x 28mm infantry @ 5 points = 90 points.

And now onto the Baron's War...

I understand those words, but...that particular combination of words in that specific order makes no sense. I find I need to pop off to the Perry's web store right now!

Fine painting here Bob - great work on these fellows. I also want to recognize your photography! Taking photos of minis is always a little tricky. I will humbly suggest you could still do with some more light on the front parts of the figures, and also note that your selection of a backdrop is almost too perfect! The little chaps blend into the background, as well they might!

But this is all me getting persnickety! These Chindits look the business, and you are absolutely going the right way in terms of photos to share with all of us. I know the Challengers will relate to those efforts, even as they appreciate your fine work!

And also struggle with the phrase "...without buying anything new..."....like, how does that even work???

More Warlord Fallschirmjager completed, not overly excited by the warlord plastic fallschirmjager miniatures. I tried for two different camo, this time I have added rain stripes to the sumpfmuster, I think it looks better.

Lovely work on these German paratroopers, even if you're not really feeling the love for them.  I also have to say brilliant backdrop for the photos. It really makes them pop to life. Well done!

…… as per custom for me  a Star Wars ship (1/172 a weird  scale, the model is about the size of a matchbox car) somehow fits into a challenge somewhere every year! A simple build I completed in between painting the other bits on Sunday, I think I assembled and painted in less than three hours while listening to The Yarkshire Gamers “Brews in the binyard chat” (where I got a mention too! )

What a fantastic set of entries, Matt. I'm going to assume the Star Wars ship is a 28mm vehicle, but it would help in future if you could state the scale, provide a size-comparison photo or email me beforehand to check. I've added a point for the flag as you have hand-painted over the photocopy.

For tracking your progress through the studios, it would be very helpful if you could download the studio map and edit it by adding numbers or ticks to indicate which studios you've visited, then include the updated map as part of your posts.

Update - the Star Wars ship is, I am informed, about the size of a Matchbox or Hotwheels car, so I've adjusted the scoring of that to a 20mm vehicle.
