Last post for the challenge, I have quite a few bits that did not make the last charge as I run out of enthusiasm after my airbrush decided to have a hissy fit so I had the afternoon off …. A big thanks to Curt, Sarah (for putting up with this craziness), all of the minions, and fellow challengers. 

So I finish with some 20th century wars armour. 

First up the venerable Ww1 1/76 male MkV from Airfix plastic, weathered and splattered with mud. This kit is a gift to a mate in Australia for his birthday later this year. 

Next up a 1/72 sdkfz 251/1 from plastic soldier company for my ww2 collection maker up for my 9th SS project. 

Finally a Swedish 1/72 resin kit armoured car from Gecko for my Cold War Swedes.

Cracking brushwork Matt. I particularly like the the camo on the 251/1 which has a really convincing depth to it. Even so my favourite would have to be the Gecko with is just wonderfully weird. It looks like someone liked the look of a T-34 and thought "I can do better. A LOT better".

This week in between painting airborne and Greeks I painted some pieces for 1980s Cold War gaming. The vehicles are a mix of Hot Wheels and matchbox repaints. Striped then, matt undercoated, then brush painted. Hand painted sign writing. 

First up a copy of my wife’s first car a VW, that met a nasty end in a accident with a taxi and a power pole

TeemuL: That's a lot Volkswagens, Matt! But of course very common in both Germanies during the Cold War and around the rest of the Europe, too. Backdrops are excellent, too, it looks very much like an old (Bond) movie or something similar. Gotta love the details on tyres on the Zoll van - and lights, register plates etc! Yeah, take some bonus points for "hand painted shields."

I first read your first phrase as "...for 1980s Car Wars gaming." and I was WOW! But Cold War suits, too. Have you ever thought about 1980s Gaslands project? ;)

Team Yankee Soviets

The Team Yankee Soviets were part of a group of three types of tanks that I got second hand when the challenge started. Two of the tanks types are in this post. I suppose they were someone else's Limbo pile so I won't count it as mine. These had been assembled and primed but some needed minor repair work.  A few of the turret mounted machine guns will remain broken for now and I will leave that to a future mini project.

A future challenge post might contain the third group that are plain T-64. There was one turret that was glued and I am in the process of fixing it.

First up today is a group of cold war era Soviet T-72. Painted in "green", with some oil paint weathering.

Flames of War British

These were next in the queue to paint. They might have been part of a boxed set that contained infantry but if so, they won't be painted any time soon as some other cool projects are in the queue. There is an assortment of Cromwell, Sherman, Stuart, Tank Destroyer, and Churchill flamethrowers.

 

Again painted in "green". There is some ghosting on a few of the decals due to not enough gloss varnish prior to putting them on as there was too much water mixed in.

Sylvain: Your tanks look gorgeous. Even though they are plain green, you were able to pick out the details and make them look that they were on the battlefield a few moments ago. I like how you painted the rubber parts of the tracks on your Sheman Firefly. This kind of attention to details really increases the realism of your paint job. This is your first entry of the Challenge and you did it with a bang, giving us a point bomb! 296 points for you! 

 

From PaulSS: Cold War BAOR supports [Limbo] (40 points)

 

Just like my last post this entry contains figures that were primed ready for painting in Challenge XIV but have remained in the box untouched, so I think are worthy of having been in Limbo.

Seven Days to the River Rhine has also had some of my gaming attention this past year so it was a chance to add these Pendraken Models to the BAOR forces.

A FV432M for indirect fire support and a trio of Milan teams.

Nine figures, three crew-served weapons and a vehicle in 10mm should score me 24 points, plus the 20 point bonus for the location.

TeemuL: Paul's second post today looks great, of course the infantry is very hard to see, when they are hugging the ground, as they should. And I'll count them as prone figures, too, so snipping couple of points away. But they are fitting for Limbo, of course, and I'm happy that after waiting for a year you have decided to paint them, since they look great, as I said. I think from 3 feet the excellent basing materials will make it realistically difficult for the opponent to see what they are actually facing at. :)

Let's see if we get any other entries today...

From GrahameH - More 15mm Cold War Battlegroups (746 points)

In a previous post I showed my US Cold War Battlegroup (BG) which I had finished and was then hoping to get some other non-completed NATO BGs completed without getting distracted. So in order to give myself a little encouragement I listened to the "Team Yankee" book. All was going well until they described the attempt by a US Armoured Cavalry Squadron to act as a speed bump in the face of the Warsaw Pact armoured advance. Spoiler - it didn't go very well for the US. Then the troubled started. "I'd like a Armoured Cavalry Squadron" I said even though it not on my list to do. However, I summoned up all my will power to keep to my original plan, failed and here it is. 

 Its not to big as I left out the artillery battery as it the same as the other US BG. The figures etc are all 15mm Battlefront. 

The HQ - MG, Stinger, CO and a M113 (20pts)

Armoured Cavalry Troop

There are 2 of these each consisting of 8 men and a M113 ACAV. (24pts x 2 = 48pts)

Support

M113 ACAV for the Recce Unit and 1 M106 with a 120mm mortar. (16pts and 4 for the mortar crew (20pts)

Two Armoured Cavalry Tank Troops (Each of 2 M60s) (32pts)

So the US Armoured Cavalry Squadron = 120pts 

Then I thought I wonder if I could add a US Air Assault BG. I have a Russian one and a British one. 

Never really sticking to a painting plan due to my butterfly issues, here is my US Air Assault BG.

A A10 Warthog, a AH-1 Cobra and 2 Chinooks (32pts) (the Cobra is Battlefront, the Chinooks are 3D printed and I have no idea where the A10 came from. 

The Ground Forces 

HQ and the 3 Infantry Companies 

This was before the entry of the Humvees so most of the transport is Mutt 151 jeeps (From Army Bits) 

(2 vehicles and 34 figures, including crew for the jeeps) = 84pts

Support Company - M151 with TOW (2 vehicles and 6 crew) = 28pts

Recce Platoon - M151 and 7 figures (22 pts)

Airborne Tank Sqn - 3 X M551 Sheridans (Army Bits). Apparently the 82nd kept their Sheridans during this time period. (24Pts)

The Artillery Battery (2 Guns, 3Vehicles and 12 figures) = 56pts (all Army Bits who make some wonderful US Infantry) I think the guns are a bit late for 1984 but they will do. 

So that the US Airborne BG at 246 Pts.

Did the Painting Challenge start much earlier than I realized? On days like this, it seems so, as with today's posts, Grahame has surpassed what most Challengers manage in an entire AHPC. 

However it happens, that is another 746 points.
