from Paul OG: Turnip28 madness (70 points)

Today I'm contributing to the Turnip28 madness squelching about this Challenge; apologies for my tardiness but Turnips mature slower out on the sludge sea you see. Root whales nibble at them you know....

Skirmishing Chaff. Extra long rifles give extra long range - it only makes sense really

Adding to my existing (pre AHPC) force is a unit of 4 Chaff (skirmishing types), a unit of 6 Brutes (melee specialists) plus two characters.

Brutes - melee specialists in kilts

As usual, they are heavily converted with all sorts of bits - Medieval, Napoleonic, Afghan Tribesman, 3d printed components, home made bits, the odd Warhammer and 40k parts and of course much rummaging in the bitz box.
Yes one has a snail on his helmet and another holds aloft a Turnip standard. Judge not.
Adding rooty growths to one's helmet is a mark of martial prowess you know

This is a Toady, one of the Leaders of my motley crew. Super creepy.
He likes hugs. Do so at own risk.

His collection of turnips and tubors have taken over his body, even transforming his face. Still, despite a lack of eyes he can sniff out the best root tubers in the muck, so the boys continue to follow him. Conversion based on a 3d print from Knucklebones Miniatures.

I had fun building these, with all sorts of madness that made me chuckle often. From misaligned spyglass sights to double length rifles, hand painted flags and heraldry, it was a hoot. Its also wonderfully freeing to just do whatever one wants. Does take awhile though, to be honest. Not the most economical of hobby genres but worth it in terms of mental health and getting bewildered comments on posts :-)

And now the piece de resistance - the Toff (or General) of my army; Tiffin McSnobbingburn, self proclaimed Lord of the Carrot fields.

'Bring me news of our Victory. And turnips - bring those also'

His snooty, holier-than-thou pose makes him far too good to walk in the filth with everyone else, so I built a viewing stand to keep him and his brandy out of the muck. Well, a suitably crappy and poorly constructed one, obviously but still, it keeps his shoes shiny and remarkably free of filth crusting.  Hand painted flag obviously, once again using the champagne foil method (Mrs Man Cave insists you know...)

'Bow down before my enormous Carrots!'

Collectively that is 12 x 28mm figs for 60 turnip filled points, subject to any flag/heraldry bonuses.  Plus two skullz rolling around in the muck.  And so my Turnip28 collection now looks thus:

...with something a bit different on the horizon! :-)

More mad veggie nonsense. These are really well done and the General on the viewing stand is very cool. Well done, bonuses awarded

From AlanD: Fodder for Turnip28 (66 Points)

With memories of Christmas dinner still fresh, I've continued with the Turnip28 theme for my second entry. I was thinking of shoe-horning it into a bonus category - maybe High Adventure, because you'd need to be for this madness to make sense - but I think I'll keep my powder dry and integrity intact.

These miserable and chronologically confused chaps are a unit of Fodder, your basic foot (or root) sloggers in Turnip28. I did have a lot of fun putting them together, from bits and pieces of Victrix, Perry and Warlord figures, with some 3D printed pits, some Sculpey, tufts, and loads of filth.

My favourite is this poor blighter:

I chuckled a bit when I was putting him together - he's just so morose!

12 parsnip people should give my 60 points for the tally, and 60 points in the T28 side challenge. The terrain in the background isn't mine - I purchased it pre-assembled and coloured. Thanks Tamsin!

Those look gloriously bizarre, Alan! Nice job on the conversions - I've added some bonus points for all of that work.

From AlanD: Festive Root Vegetables for Turnip28 (35 Points)

I don't feel good about any of this.

I've been amused and bemused this year by the weird little niche in our Zeitgeist that is Turnip28. If you aren't familiar with this nonsense, it's a setting, and game, designed by the British artist Max Fitzgerald about a post-apocalyptic Napoleonic/Medieval world where root vegetables are essentially taking over. More succinctly, as Max Fitzgerald has explained, 'it's about turnips'. Such is the insidious creep of The Root that even Curt has come under its influence.

Paul O'G has spent much of the last 6 months wearing me down by sending me daily turnip photos. I've actually been incredibly focused in my hobby time this year, painting a 28mm Soviet force for Battle Group to match the Romanians I worked on in AHPC XII. But finally, I have succumbed. The charm of this nonsense is the opportunity to kitbash ludicrous figures from the sorts of bits we all have lying around, mashing together anything so long as the technology doesn't extend much further than 1805. Some of the great figures Paul has come up with actually make me laugh out loud. I've had a lot of fun so far making some figures of my own, while listening to suitably thematic music, with songs like 'Swede Child of Mine', '24 Hour Parsnip People' and 'Counting the Beet'.

One of the factions in Turnip28 rejoices in the name 'The Lopers of Maudlin Marsh', who are able to field a unit of Lopers - permanently drunk stilt walkers who stagger about the battlefield. That's what I've modelled here, using bit of Victrix Highlanders, Perry WotR, GW Sylvaneth, Warlord ECW, some 3D printed bits, tufts, Sculpey, a metal barrel, bottles that were once Soviet Molotov cocktails, some Frostgrave bits, copper wire, Greenstuff and bamboo skewers. Oh, and a shield from Fireforge. It amuses me that men on stilts would be heavily armoured from the waist up, but wear kilts, and that most of them wear helmets that prevent them from seeing what's below them.

Anyway, enough of this madness. If we count the little swampling parsnip musician that I made from Sculpey, I think these guys should get me on the board in AHPC XIII, and in the Turnip Side Duel, with 35 points.

I'll finish with a photo of the current state of my worktable. Shameful, I know!

I wish you all a very happy festive season, and a wonderful painting challenge.

Oooh, these are simply fabulous, Alan. I looove the Turnip28 setting, and these models of yours fit the mood perfectly. I love the Loper faction (cult?), but have been too shy (ie lazy) to make up figures for it. But now there they are, and I now need some! I love the wonderful effects you've achieved by your kitbashing, especially the bottles and various accoutrements. I also appreciate your thematic root vegetable backdrop - genius.

I'm going to give a couple of points each for all the mad modifications. Wonderful work, Alan, and welcome back to the Challenge!

From SimonM: "Kitbash Games" Punchline (5 Points)

This 28mm scale resin miniature of Punchline is produced by “Kitbash Games” and will be one of the company's stretch goals for its upcoming "Supers Unlimited" "Kickstarter" in January 2019. "Better-known locally as Zorbo the Magnificent", this penniless clown entertainer "found two gleaming golden power gloves fallen from a smashed glass case" in an abandoned super-lair, which would transform him into a "heavy-hitting villain."

Dave Zorbavic was initially primed using two coats of "Vallejo" Heavy Green and had his trousers shaded with "Citadel" Biel-Tan Green. I then 'picked out' his big boots and tie with "Vallejo" Heavy Red, before heavily washing his bulbous footwear with "Citadel" Carroburg Crimson and his neck cloth in Nuln Oil. The mortgage defaulter's shirt was pigmented using a combination of "Vallejo" Heavy Violet and "Citadel" Druchii Violet.
The criminal's power gloves were originally treated to a layer of "Vallejo" Heavy Sienna, and were subsequently painted with Gold and then a serious splash of "The Army Painter" Strong Tone Quickshade. As a final step they were dry-brushed with (more) "Vallejo" Gold. I decided against simply giving the clown an entirely "Vallejo" Dead White head by leaving some of his flesh showing around his neck and bonce, and simply washed it with a little Pale Grey.

As a final step I picked out the former party entertainer's hair with "Vallejo" Heavy Red and "Citadel" Nuln Oil", and his nose with a dab of "Vallejo" Heavy Red. I chose not to shade the nose as I wanted the red to appear quite flat, and eventually decided against applying any additional red-coloured make-up to his face and mouth as well, as I rather liked the hauntingly lifeless look his pure "Vallejo" Black eye sockets and mouth slit created...

The second of the week's entries from Simon sees a... well, I'm not familiar with the subject in question, but my word, isn't he a cheery chap? And rather disturbing as well...

5 points, and we're on to the last of Simon's submissions!
