From JezT - Late Persian Cavalry (115 points)

Dear All

Excited with this post as it is another new Basic Impetus army emerging. This time Late Persian - here I was not initially enthusiastic about the army which I am using to join in with my brothers collection of classical armies. However got really enthused by the excellent Cutting Room Miniatures (part of Wargames Foundry) figures.

This first post represents the cavalry, which are the classic Mede style with the distinctive headscarf. I love that these miniatures have them looking a bit like Ninja! The basing happened a bit by accident but my brother gave me the flowers which I think really make the bases.

These represent two bases of light cavalry and one base of the medium version with 3 figures on. In the Basic Impetus lists I have selected to get rid of the scythed chariot and instead I have upgraded
to having some Guard cavalry.

So in total this 11 cavalry figures so 110 points. Next up part 2 to get going on the foot ……..

All the best Jez

Very nice work on these, Jez - the Casting Room range does turn up some very nice figures from time to time, and my own Garage of Shame has more than a few examples of their work lurking in storage. I really must do something about that!

I'm giving these cavalrymen the usual 10 points each for 28mm figures, but I like the handpainted decorative motifs on the horse furniture, clothing and armour, so I'm throwing in an extra 5 points.

From Jez Todd - Medieval Pagan Sarmogitian - 165 points

Dear All

Second entry and so pleased can post a completed 25 mm new Basic Impetus army! If you don't know the "Basic" version of Impetus you play with a set 10-12 units. I have a Teutonic Knights army and play this against a matched historical Russian army. Using the Basic Impetus set army lists I was finding that some of my painted tribal light infantry were just sitting in the box, as they were not part of the basic core Teutonic Knights army units. I therefore decided to paint up a third army specifically using these to fit in the set.

Pagan Prussian seemed an obvious choice but felt it would be too boring having another warband infantry type army. Luckily had inspiration for a more unusual army from this booklet about the Battle of Saule 1236.

The Sword Brothers were an early military order that were wiped out in the battle and the remnants got taken over by the newer Teutonic Knights order. They both fought pagan Sarmogitians or Lithuanians. These proved a surprising difficult opponent to kill off. A feature of the Sarmogitian army was its use of light cavalry. It is an interesting army that matches perfectly historically, was relatively cheap to buy as most bases are just light cavalry with a couple of models on. Also thought it would be interesting to play with.

The painted figures are 12 cavalry and 8 infantry so 160 points. The figures also fit nicely into a box!

All basing is done for the winter campaigning season! The figures are all Gripping Beast matching my Teutonic Knights. Here had to select the most appropriate range and thought Dark Age Picts suited best. I especially liked the cavalry in hoods, I made some small changes to add in some bearskins on the figures and luckily still had some left over characteristic teardrops shields from my earlier painted foot lights.

The standard style is taken from the booklet but as pagans any animal skull type standard would be fine. For the infantry I already had the required foot light but I need some dismounted bowmen. These are also from the Pict range.

The final picture shows how I will field the new infantry paired with some previously painted skirmishers to make a new foot light archer unit (this is a T shooter unit in Basic Impetus vocab). In the Sarmogitian army list there is an option to field more cavalry units dismounted but I will just have the required two units and keep the maximum light cavalry.

Finally with this deployment I would now need some new skirmish units for the Teutonic Knights and here just have a couple of skirmish bases. Again these are using Gripping Beast Picts but just used the more regular looking figures and added a couple of shields with the black / white Teutonic Knights design.

All in all 160 points worth …. cant wait to try these out.

Cheers Jez

You certainly picked an esoteric subject for this submission, Jez; nice work thinking outside the box, except the first pic of the figures shows them in a box... mind blown!

Very nice work on the handpainted shield designs and standard, so we'll say 5 extra points there.

The snowy basing adds to the sense that these fellas are tough nuts who won't let anything as trivial as a northern winter stop them from giving the Crusaders a bit of stick, and good luck to them doing it, I say. The Ordenstaat always was too big for its boots!

From JezT - AVBCW - Armed Police - 65Points

Hi All,

This is my first post for this competition. To say hello, I am Jez, a wargamer based in the UK near Coventry. I tend to do all 28 mm gaming mainly playing Basic Impetus games against local friends and my brother.  This is my third year as an entrant and pushing myself for 500 points. I love the painting challenge as a way of motivating yourself through projects. This year at least made sure I had bought some lead before the challenge started, in fact made the mistake of starting painting lots of projects but finishing nothing.

Anyway my first finished entry is actually a new project for A Very British Civil War genre, the mythical civil war set in 1938. We are going to use the popular Bolt Action rules - I am sure these are going to work well especially with the "Operation Sealion" booklet option with the Home Guard type extra rules. Anyway I will be the government forces player and armed police seemed an obvious category for a squad.

These are the initial squad, a mix of Footloose Irish Civil War and Foundry Victorian period police. These would benefit from some support so added in a Lewis light machine gun support, blended from some head swaps.

Also added a mounted command element, and as playing using Bolt Action I have a mounted and also a dismounted figure to use.

The mounted figures are from Foundry. In total this is 2 mounted and 9 foot so 65 points to get me started. If anyone has any recommendations for other manufacturers and figures that would fit the mounted police or foot theme please post.

Cheers and "chin chin" to defeating that Bolshevik and commie swarm  - Jez

Welcome aboard Jez!

I can't remember the last time I saw the Old Bill in the hallowed halls of the AHPC, and these are a real treat. AVBCW is a setting made for the creative painter and converter.

That's 65 runs on the board, a cracking first submission!

From JezzT: Final Post - Anglo Dane & Renaissance Base Camp (50 points)

Dear All

Just squeezing in a final post. Firstly I have 6 Gripping Beast Anglo Dane - will use these as Saga reinforcements or for Basic Impetus on a sabot base.

Next I have two figures from The Assault Group Italian renaissance range  - these are painted and based to be part of a base camp set for Impetus games. For the base camp I wanted some terrain that could be a base camp on its own but also add to another town base camp creating a bigger town option. This is what I came up with ... just using the old Warhammer town set. I had some pieces already so added in a bell tower and "pimped up" a base to fit.

So that is 8 foot figures - 40 points to add on. Not included base camp as is just a cut out and stick together really.

Not quite made my target but really enjoyed being part again. Thanks Curt and everyone!

Cheers Jez

From Curt:
Great looking Danes, Jez. Besides, who's going to criticize guys toting big two-handed axes. I also like your two Renaissance chaps (nice flagstone bases), but what really tripped my trigger was seeing that old Warhammer Fantasy card terrain set. Now, that takes me back to the good ole days of the 'Shadows Over Bogenhafen' campaign. What classics. This town base looks excellent (again, the flagstones really tie it all together) and I'm sure will be the envy of your fellow Impetus opponents.

I'm going to give you another 10 points for the town for nothing else but the pure nostalgia of it (besides, sticking stuff together and making a base is still work). Well done Jezz and thanks for participating in this year's event - hope to see you out for the next one.

From: Jez Todd - Early Samurai - TAG 25mm (20 points)

Hi All

Just a small 4 figure 25mm entry from me this week. These figures are from The Assault Group and really like the style and design. Last year built up an Impetus Ikko Ikki peasant league army and this has the option to field a Foot Light Samurai unit with longbow. Quite a powerful unit to have. The Ikko Ikki's most notable battles were in the sixteenth century and these based on the armour style these figures are really for earlier period Samurai, but I think they can fit in. When playing Impetus will use them on a light foot sabot base.

This is about at the limit of my painting skills but appreciate that, with the samurai armour, there's still plenty of scope for extra detail. So just 20 points - but pleased to get these finished.

Cheers Jez

Jezz, there's nothing wrong with just 4 figures as entry nor with your painting mate. These chaps are pretty good imho! Samurai armour is not the easiest armour to paint what with all those little frills and thingamabops everywhere so there! Your terrain is very good as well, I really appreciate it when people take time to make photos of their figures set in good terrain. 20 points will be added to your score this evening Jezz!

From: Jez Todd - Biblical Hittite - Part Two (110 Points)

Dear All

Part Two of the Warlord Games figures Basic Impetus army project and really pleased I managed to keep momentum and finish these off.

Firstly is the key unit in the Hittite army - the heavy chariots, I naturally selected the option to go for the 3 man heavy chariot as these seemed to be key for the Battle of Kadesh 1275BC, the signature battle of the period against the New Kingdom Egyptians.

There are two of these heavy chariots, with a close up shot.

I had quite a bit of "faff" getting the crew into the chariot, especially as decided to use some of the command foot figures. I ended up having to completely file the figure base down and then the standard bearer foot broke off and needed repair ......

Now pleased I went for the reins and just did this with a piece of thread.

Next up are the two units of Hittite light foot, but here went for the long spear option. From basic reading this again seemed to be a signature feature of the Hittites. I did not especially like the standard Hittite foot figure option so went for one of the basic bronze age armies but then had to convert the shields to give the Hittite  "figure of eight" look.

Finally a shot of the total army in the box - 10 units all together including the allies from last week. Looking forward to trying this out.

All together that should be 10 foot plus two 3 man chariots (three figures plus two horse) - 50 points plus 50 points.

Cheers Jez

Hoi there Jezz, what a great addition to your Ancient Hittite force! I love those cow hide shields, you've done them up beautifully! It is always extremely nice to finish a force for the table and I can imagine it is also true for this specially goodlooking one. I really am looking forward to your next project! Tonight the 110 points will be added to your total.

From: Jez Todd - Biblical Hittite Allies - 25mm Warlord Games (95 Points)

Dear All,

A project I want to complete this challenge is a new Basic Impetus army - Hittites. The part one submission is six bases of the allied troops, slingers, javelin light foot and one light chariot. The figures are all Warlord games. It is the first time I have used these figures, I like the company, who have an excellent website and mail order is very efficient. The figures are well proportioned and seem very historically accurate.

Perhaps as these are really true 25mm it is taking a bit of time to get used to, they are smaller then other figure manufacturers. As I will mainly be playing against my brothers New kingdom Egyptians also from warlord this is not such an issue.

Anyway first shot is of the light chariot. The back shot terrain piece is my brothers. Just a desert mix base and trying out the yellow border on the base - still a bit undecided about this.

Next up two units of javelin men - 8 figures in total.

Finally three bases of skirmish slingers - six figures in total. Sorry picture bit out of focus ...

This should be 15 foot figures plus a chariot (two figures plus two horses and cart - was not sure if this counted as 20 points for chariot).

Part 2 will be the Hittites themselves .......

Cheers Jez

Hoi there Jezz, well that's a very nice load of Ancient goodies you've shared with us today! They are really nice looking figures, but the chariot of course is the créme de la créme for me. Great stuff to roll in the Tuesday of Challenge week 7! 95 points will be added tonight.

From Jez Todd - Teutonic 28mm Reinforcements (130 points)

Dear All

My first post to the Tuesday group and delighted to be participating again for the second year. To be honest not done much painting since the last challenge and a steady start but great to post up one complete mini challenge as a first post.

These are reinforcements for 28 mm Teutonic Knights based for use with Impetus rules. My original figures were all cavalry for an army size of around 300 points, based on the famous battle of Lake Peipus against the medieval Russians of Alexander Nevsky. These extras allow more options and also can be fielded for the new Basic Impetus rules armies. Typically here there are 9 to 10 fixed units per army based on a set list. I had to get a few extra units to fit this set list.

All the figures for this army are Gripping Beast. I really like the figures and range.

First up are some Foot Peasants - not going to be a battle winner and did not want to spend too much money so just bought a basic pack and added in a commander sergeant.

There are two new crossbow units.

Next are solid Teutonic Knight sergeants armed with long spear. Again just bought a basic pack of four as had a couple base camp figures already that I planned to add in.  It is a solid unit of Heavy Foot so did not want to be too skimpy with figures. You an see the 4 counting for the challenge. The T on the shield design signifies order "sergeants" as opposed to full Knights who could display a full cross - well that is according to the Osprey books ..........

Also a unit of medium Livonian cavalry. Here had a pack of four figures and as I have the same figures for light cavalry decided to use all four on a base of medium cavalry. The final shot shows a Basic Impetus Teutonic Knights army with the new units joining others. Looking forward to trying this out shortly.

Altogether that is 5 cav and 16 foot so should be 130 points. That should complete my Teutonic Knights as am Ok for Basic Impetus and up to a 450 points full Impetus army, especially if I start using available options such as charismatic generals and such.

All the best Jez

Hoi there Jez, great to see your first Tuesday entry! Those Teutonic knights do look like they mean business. I really like how you've put quite a lot of character in the different bases/ vignettes. Specially the one featuring the serfs is really nice. The snowy basing looks awesome and is of course totally appropriate for the Lake Peipus battle. It is a great looking force so thanks heaps for sharing! 130 points will be added to your total this evening along with the regular update of the summary.
