TomL Pulp Robots and Epic ACW (210 points)

My final post of free fire.  While waiting for various stages of the ACW units basing to dry, I painted these Pulp Robot minions from Bombshell Miniatures.

These comically menacing robots remind me of the Buzz Lightyear villain.  Painted with Vallejo Metallics Aluminum, Tamiya Clear paints with a few washes.  The final infantry regiment for my ACW challenge is the 7th NJ.

I went back and added the unit name from the Warlord flag sheet to the bottom of all of the flag stands as it's practically impossible to tell the unit flags apart at this scale.

These were not quite as clean a sculpt as the infantry plus painting horses takes me forever but at least I finished one of my two cavalry units.  Painted with a mix of contrast and normal acrylic paints as before.

Final points: 210

2 28mm figures * 5: 10
60 epic figures * 2 :  120
20 epic cavalry * 4 :  80

As I said before, thanks to everyone for all the hard work and effort to support the challenge and to all the participants for the excellent entries.  My morning coffee will be quite boring going forward.

--------------

Congratulations on completing your Challenge Tom - you've certainly pumped out a lot of your ACW troops and I'm looking forward to seeing them all arrayed in your wrap-up post!

TomL, ACW, the Wise and Faithful (Points: 180)

Returning to my ACW project on the Unions side, I decided to try another variation of the base contrast colours. The Ultramarine was a touch too light (saved by the wash) but Pylar Glacial has horrible coverage with a single pass. I can see how this will be useful for a cold shade or a winter base but I returned to Briar Chill during the first base.  Anyway, here is the 5th NJ:

Continuing on in Paradise we visit the Fourth Sphere: The Wise. Here contemplative, sage, scholarly types contemplate reality, heaven & hell and how to correctly spell "Orc".

This Scholarly version of JRRT was from Boarshead miniatures. Painted in Foundry acrylics and GW washes. My attempt at a vaguely green herringbone using washes was not very successful. Ah well. The pilgrimage through Paradise continues on to the Fifth Sphere: Warriors of Faith.

Father Pious, Brother Repentant and Reverend Alms

These Footsore Miniatures were painted with all Foundry Acrylics. Picture background are from Jon Hodgson's backdrop painting books.

Points for this week: 180

60 Union ACW 15mm figures @ 2 = 120

4 28MM figures @ 5 = 20

Wise & warriors of the Faith = 40

-------------

Your union troops look quite the business Tom, and the army is looking great!

Footsore do make some lovely models don't they! always nice to see them painted up. And the Brother Repentant resonates with all the Minions at this end of the Challenge! :-)

From TomC: Back in Blue [Limbo] (220 points)

Hello everybody, belated Happy New Year, very glad to see a lot of great progress so far from fellow contestants, hopefully Santa has been good to you all over the year end!

As always, thanks to Curt for organising the Challenge, to the Minion team for volunteering and to Tamsin for her helpful instructions (errors in following which being entirely my own fault!).

These will be a familiar sight by now for many challengers - Warlord Games’s Epic American Civil War infantry, certainly it seems I’m not the only one putting paint to these this year! These are from the free sprue attached to Wargames Illustrated a while ago, plenty enough to have kept me going!

I started these before AHPC XIII, for which my first entry was the commander and artillery piece, which also come on the frame. Seems fitting to open another Challenge with the rest! Having given these infantry a once-round of blue, I put them on hold for the duration of the challenge… and then the subsequent two years… still, not the worst offenders in my pile of potential!

I painted these the old-fashioned way and, for my sins, without any metallic paints, so I really didn’t do myself any favours in the planning phase! This was compounded by issues with the recommended paints, Night Blue (glossy, which I realise now I cannot bear!) and Andrea Blue (suspiciously thin), which led to me to redo the blues with various Citadel offerings.

Not content with the problems I’d caused for myself, I continued by being unable to find the paper banners which came with the magazine at the critical juncture. Doubtless, these will resurface at an inopportune moment, but for the meantime I did my best to freehand the stripes on Old Glory and cobble something together for the regimental banner. This was a combination of Games Workshop decals I took apart, reassembled and painted over. I appreciate that whilst this has some of the right elements (eagle, shield, NFL logo), it does perhaps look a little modern… at least there’s something on the flag!

I did some minor work on these before assembly, there are only a couple of variations of ‘strips’ provided by Warlord, so there is a risk of repeating stands quite quickly. I delayed this by cutting some of the strips in half to mix them up, if I recall correctly, there are a couple of points where this can be done with a minimum of grief, and I do think it helps break up the repeated sculpts. Probably not possible with the Epic Waterloo collection alas!

In terms of scoring, there are 100 wee lads in the unit, at 2 points a head being the going rate for Warlord’s ‘Epic scale’ infantry. The commander and gun above are just included for completeness, so 200 points for the submission, with an additional 20 for the ‘Limbo’ bonus category that these sadly neglected Federals hopefully merit! All in, should be 220 points?

As a final note, my laptop has failed and so I have resorted to the mobile for this post - apologies for any issues with it as a consequence!

TeemuL: Yes, Warlord's Epic scale indeed is 15mm or two points a head, so you got yourself a nice haul of points here. You have now accomplished your target of 250 points in just two entries and in less than a month. But don't worry, me, myself and the whole Tuesday crew encourages and expects you to continue painting until end of March.

The models themselves look nice, you have found a nice blue in the end. I hope you find your flags, too. Your cutting the strips and reorganising the troops a bit gives quite natural look on the force. I have to remember that when I make some experiments with that scale and the freebie sprues from WI magazine myself. :) Compiling a post using mobile phone is very painful, I feel you. I forgive you for not adding any labels and added couple of suitable by myself. Feel free to edit, if needed.

From TomC: Union Artillery [Under Construction] (20 points)

Hello everyone, happy holidays and I hope everyone is well. Quite a few firsts for me here, first challenge and off to an especially slow start following another first for me, COVID, so keen to add to my first and only completed figure of 2022 so far...

I've started at the Under Construction site to at least up that number a little! These characters will likely be a familiar sight, the officer and artillery from Warlord Games Epic Battles American Civil War sprue which they gave away with Wargames Illustrated. I'm a little behind the curve on these but it was nice to do something different: in over twenty years of hobby I've never either done anything below 28mm or attempted just a summer grass base! I shall remain quiet about the fifty infantry who also came on the sprue...

The Warlord plastics are quite 'flat-pack', so I carved one of the gunners out for a little dimension. I do think I'd struggle to keep up variety for a large battery though.

The cannon itself seemed quite chunky, so I went with a more traditional bronze-ish metal, which also seemed quite colourful. Thankfully the Union seemed to trend towards accessories being black which always gets a thumbs up from this slow painter.

Did anyone else play Ultimate General Civil War?

For the uniforms, I started with Vallejo Game Colour Night Blue, then quickly realised both that Night Blue is satin and secondly that I hate satin paints (apologies gloss fans...).

In other news, I thought the officer looked a bit like Kiefer Sutherland, hence the blond hair.

Someone has to wave the sword...

Particular thanks to my lovely wife firstly for the light box and secondly for showing me how to edit the photos out of the stygian gloom I'd managed to achieve, despite the light box. Any lack of focus is entirely my fault.

As the figures were all partially started earlier in the year, they are nil points, just the location bonus of 20 points for today.

Next up, High Adventure, in the meantime, good luck everyone!

First, welcome to the Painting Challenge, Tom! I'm sorry to hear that you have a bout of the Salty Cough and I hope you're well on the mend now. These It's great that you've made good use of the 'Under Construction' theme to get yourself on the points roster. I quite like the soft bronze highlight of the gun, especially when set against the blue and black of the crew.

I'm going to add a few more points for you finishing this set - well done! Looking forward to what you have in store for us for 'High Adventure'.

From TomG - On The March To Salem via Arda - 640pts and lots of ACW (Arda) (Sarah's Yacht)

Hey all, I have returned with many figures to share with you all. I have however decided to go no further on the planet rings until my American Civil War project is finished, and yet I wanted to get the outer ring completed.

So here we are, first port of call is a trip on Sarah's Yacht with this female mouse figure out of the board game "Mice & Mystics", measuring in at the 28mm mark.

Although not my favourite model I have ever painted, it went quickly and, I feel, turned out quite nicely. Sadly it wasn't until too late that I noticed the photos are slightly out of focus... whoops.

But with this ticket bought (properly this time) I shall sail all the way to Arda, and bring out this fantastic Highlander Cow, which admittedly is my wife's, but I was given permission to paint it for her.

He was a delight to paint, and a fun challenge to get the hair as ginger as possible. This was also my first time painting tartan, and it was both terrifying and fun, all at the same time.

Now on to the project at hand! To join in with the two stands of Union troops from last week, I bring you the final 60 Yankees. Again all of this project will be painted with GW Contrast Paints, in an experiment to see just how quickly I can get them done.

Now to this week's main focus; 2 sprues of Confederates, each sprue containing 100 infantry, 1 mounted officer, 1 cannon and 4 crew. Although rough and ready, the speed in which an all grey force comes together is very motivating for me.

All told each sprue takes about 3 hours, with breaks, which allows for one an evening if I knuckle down, and the kids go to bed on time!

So there we go, a grand total of 277 figures in one week, which is definitely a personal best for me, and one I will try to beat for next Friday!

Points Breakdown -
15mm Infantry x 272 @ 2pts = 544pts
15mm Mounted x 3 @ 4pts = 12pts
15mm Artillery Piece x 3 @ 4pts = 12pts
28mm Mouse @ 5pts + Star Yacht @ 20pts = 25pts
28mm Mounted (monster) @ 10 pts + Challenge 20pts = 30pts

See you all next week.

Tom.

From DaveD
Did you hear that one coming people! Its a whole lotta KABOOM from Tom. That's a fine Highland cow - I am sure James from the chat will be impressed! Its been great to have you around on the evening chats this week and watch you work through the sprues while chatting the tedium away - the way you have chosen to do them is certainly working. I have topped you up with extra points for being a tartan virgin for a grand total of 640!
