From JamesM - 10mm Fantasy Knights (For Joshua) - 24 Points

Hi folks,

Given all the events of this year, plans for the 'For Joshua' charity gaming project in honour of my little boy have been more or less put on hold. Whilst I've spent a lot of time this year basing up the various donations, I've not painted many more of the 10mm figures I had still to do for my own contribution. I decided to start this years AHPC with some progress on these. January looks to be a tad busy, so not sure how much more I'll get done!

These are 10mm metal figures from Magister Militum, and in keeping with my 'Bretonnian' theme I've gone for a unit of 'mounted Sergeants'. These mail clad lancers are more 'medium' cavalry than heavy, and probably get all the dirty jobs the knights don't feel are honourable enough. 

They still, however, carry the colours of the kings army with his red and green on the shields and flags, while their connection to the land and the Lady of the Lake is signified by their dark blue clothing.  

I did consider doing these chaps on three smaller 50mm rounds, but in the end decided to go for a single ranked unit. I believe that these twelve 10mm mounted troops come in at 24 points. 

JamesM: 'For Joshua' 10mm fantasy Humans (100 points)

Hi folks,

My final post of the challenge, but not my final units painted for my 'For Joshua' project. While I have made some good progress, I'm currently left with a load of knights to paint, some Camels and a few spearmen. However, with the help of the challenge and MartinC, the pile I had at the beginning has been substantially reduced. I plan to keep going in order to get everything painted while I still have some enthusiasm. I also have donations still to base, which will keep me busy for a bit!

Unfortunately, with the current health crisis, it doesn't look like we are going to get much of an opportunity to show off any games for a while.

Unfortunately, I am going to fall short of my target of points for this year. I lost some time at the start of the challenge due to poor computer game purchasing decisions, and have found that the 10mm figures take me just about as long as 15mm, for less points. Also, I spent a fair amount of time basing up mini's others had sent me due to our planned (but cancelled) Hammerhead participation game. Still, I think I gave the points target a good run, with my achieving 65% of my total - and a points figure roughly around what I have achieved in previous challenges.

Onto this submission - some of the supporting units for my knights. Very much based on the old Warhammer Brettonians, I've gone for a load of archers and some light mounted archers/yeomen.

A total of 60 Magister Militum archers:

12 Yeomen with spears and bows (effectively light cavalry with ranged weapons), along with a hero stand consisting of a knight and standard bearer (Clan MacDonald standard used). These are Magister Militum figures:

And some mages with a magic egg for the centre of DaveD's stone circle. My mages and the egg are from Pendraken:

Note that the Gandalf like wizard is one of Noel's figures, which seemed suitable for this gathering. It did leave me with one spare mage, who also made it onto a stand along with a Elf warrior painted by a blogging friend (Lee).

Unfinished on the painting shelves stands a 15mm dropship and some sci-fi troops, a ragtag selection of 10mm skellie characters and a small fleet of British ships for Cruel Seas (which I need to figure out a colour selection for).

Total for this entry then:

68 x 10mm Infantry = 68 points
14 x 10mm Cavalry = 28 points

Total: 96 points

PeterD  Lovely work on these tiny little humans and all for a worthwhile project.  I do hope that you get to take these forces on the road eventually James.  I agree with your points calculation but bumped it up to an even 100 for the egg and basing.

I'm still here, honest!

The last few weeks I have been plugging away at a few models for the challenge, but the vast majority of my time has been spent sorting out models I've received for the project.

This weekend I finished basing 54 bases of models, most of them on 50mm by 100mm, with a few 50mm and 25mm rounds thrown in. I'd like to say I'm caught up, but I have two more armies worth of mini's still to base, and received some from Ray and some from a fellow blogger (Lee) today. Not that I am complaining, the response has been fantastic, heartwarming, generous and unbelievably kind - and I don't think I could adequately put into words how grateful I am for all those who have spent some time painting something for my wee boys memory.

Today, my aim was to finish off some of by own bits and maybe get a few more points onto my tally.

Given that we aim to put on a participation game at Hammerhead in a weeks time, I wanted to have a slightly more substantial contribution of my own. So I focused on getting most of my undead done.

Nothing to do with the simple paint job, honest.

Now, things get a little squiffy, as I had also to paint a few models to finish off a friends donation - in the form of three infantry standard bearers, and one mounted.

These have been included into someone else's units, which are now based up:

And a few weeks ago, I also completed some artillery for my knights:

All figures are from Pendrakens ranges, and are 10mm. The undead banner bearers are conversions using paperclips with simple hand painted flags. Mainly because I like how the units look when they have them. The cannon is just from their medieval range - no one seems to do trebuchet, which is what I had been after.

So, totals (without any flag related bonuses applied):

24 Archers (24 pts)
12 Cavalry (with own banner) (24 pts)

Its Challenge Island time again, even though I've not completed my evil Snowlord Challenge!!

Fancy wanting me to actually play a game with the figures I've spent the last 5 years painting up and boring you lot to death with????

I dunno how he does it?

Anyway I leave Snowlords peak and trundle down the slope to O'Gardy's Gulch!

"Over the years I have enjoyed seeing others paint and donate models for others. It inspired me to do the same and it was most enjoyable. So, paint a miniature or piece of terrain for a friend (does not have to be a fellow Challenger)."

So I thought I'd do one last 10mm unit for James and his brilliant For Joshua Project.

They painted up pretty easy to be honest

There are 16 figures so should earn me 32 points plus another 30 for the Challenge Island  entry.

So a total of 62 points.

From MartinC More Troops for Joshua - Dwarf Infantry (80pts)

Painting has been very slow for a couple of weeks - work has been so rubbish they had to pay me to go.
I have finished my final batch of troops for Joshua, for now. We have been testing out a quick play participation game using TtS rules as the collection will get it's 1st outing at the hammerhead show in a couple of weeks

Dwarf infantry and hero types

Dwarf spearmen. The standard is the top cut off from 28mm Gaul standard - Boar

basing these is tricky as somehave very thick bases and some almost no bases at all

From MartinC. Joshua's Dwarven Allies (84pts)

So I'm halfway through the next army For Joshua. Scooty had bought the Dwarf army pack from Pendraken but not had chance to paint them so they were passed on to me and I started them a couple of days to go.
They were a joy to paint with really nice casts and interesting detail

The missle trops come in 3 types. 9 crossmow men. These were the most bring of the figures

7 archers - I gave these some cover

All the Dwarfs are very beardy and have massive noses

9 handgunners

Next up 12 Dwarfs mounted on Shetland ponies - these could be the worst cavalry unit ever and would make better mounted infantry

2 mortars. I put these in a pit and added an extra fig as the guard

2 bombards. I put these behind swing door mantlets made from coffee stirrers

The door pullers are converted spearmen and the commander at the front is the wizard from the army

The play test showed that we need lots of generals and heroes. te general is on the larger stand with the standard bearer and the guy playing a massive alpine horn. I once saw a cow bell marhing band in Switzerland. Trippiest thing ever as the largest bells are the size of a dustbin and hung from the hip

The whole army so far. I have 3 units of warriors to paint but a really cool model arrived in the post yesterday and I'm off to paint that.

Hi Ho, Hi Ho it's off to war we go!  Great army of short people Martin, lots of firepower.  Love the scratch built mantels on the bombards, I've thrown in 5 extra points for those.

From MartinC: Rats (32pts)

My role as the jobbing painter For Joshua continues, and it is a nice role to have. Scotty from our club donated these, and my next post, last week and James passed them on.

The are quite large Skaven, no clue on the manufacturer. They are nice figures and I painted them as black rats. There are 2 units of warriors and a general with a retinue of awestruck actual rats.

There are 29 warriors and 3 little packs of rats. Say 1pt each so 32 pts

Those are some fine looking rats Martin!

From LeeH - Mammoth and Bison Riders "For Joshua" (44 Points)

A slight change of tack from me today as I submit my contribution to a charity project for James MacCraggs (aka The Mad Tin Hatter). Last year James and his wife suffered a terrible loss and James wrote very movingly of how he would like to raise money for charity (detailed here and here). Back in November Posties Rejects went to the Warfare show in Reading and on the way down there we discussed a joint contribution to this worthy cause. So when we got access to the trade hall we went straight to the Kallistra stand and each picked a couple of units to paint. Ray has already painted his contribution and now it's my turn. Having just painted a load of 6mm Elephants I thought I needed a break and should do something completely different.... so 10mm Mammoths it is! 

I've not really painted 10mm before so this was interesting to see the difference between it and my normal scale. It was certainly fun to paint and I was able to use oil washes on these whereas I usually employ ink washes on my 6mm stuff. Interesting! Amazingly I found 10mm harder to work on than my normal fare and its the first time I have noticed how my painting style has gradually adapted to the predominant scale I work in, making everything else harder. Weird. 

Along with the Mammoths are more Barbarians this time riding Bison! Most impressive and very tough looking. 

James asked that all submissions not be based up, as he will do this stage himself for consistency. However, purely for the sake of presentation, I have tacked these models to some plain bases. They will snap off easily when they are moved to their final home. 

Points wise, these are relatively simple. 2 Mammoth and six riders should get me 12 points and the 16 Bison riders will net another 32 points, so 44 points all in. One more step towards my target, and a modest contribution to a very worthy cause.

From JamesM: 10mm Pegasus Knights, For Joshua! (Cooke's Crevase) (64 Points)

Hi folks,

Following my earlier dabble with Sci Fi drones, I've ballooned it over to the fluff filled crack that is Cookes Crevase.

If that doesn't put you off your Sunday dinner, nothing will.

My previous airborne insertion being a failure, I decided to go with gliders this time round. In the form of some winged horses (Pegasususeses, which I think is the plural). The (tenuous) connection to geology being that these creatures are mountain dwellers, who use with mighty wingspan to gloat over mountain goats and reach inaccessible pastures. As with most mountain dwelling fantasy flying creatures, you do not want one of these to poo on you while out for a hike.

I would also point out that the rocks on the base are real, hence a slightly less tenuous geology connection. Martin can spend hours figuring out which types they are next time we play.

These models are 10mm scale figures from Polar Fox Studios. In my imagination force of good as part of my ongoing charity project, these units form the dedicated bodyguard of King Joshua. Able to keep up with the boss on his Hippogriff, these are elite troops equipped with the very best equipment, including rings of featherfall...

I've stuck to the same red, green and blue paint scheme for these troops, while the wings of the Pegasus are faded from grey to light tan. I used the flying stands provided (which are for Warmaster style basing) but adapted to mount on the 50mm by 100mm bases. I had planned to have 6 on a base, but wingspan meant this was a bit of a squeeze, so I have three.

These figures took me a while to paint, mainly as I had no idea what to do with them. A common issue I have with fantasy figures. Give me a uniform to paint (with appropriate colour guides) any day...

In total then, there are 12 mounted 10mm figures for a total of 24 points. Plus 30 points for the Challenge Island location giving me a total of 54 points.

Lovely Pegasi James (see, you learn something new every day)! 

I really like the dusky grey-blue-to-tan of heir wings set against the blue, green and red of the riders' livery. In addition, the basing looks terrific, with them all massed together, swooping in for the kill. 

I'm going to give a few extra points as these are bit more involved than straight-up cavalry. A great entry for Cooke's Crevasse, well done!
