From PeteB: Gluttony, Greed, Wrath and some other figures (143 points)

I couldn't post last week, so now I have a bit more things to show. I managed to finish three circles of "The Abyss", a Dulcop Robin Hood figure and some 20 mm figures. Let's start with the circles.

Gluttony - Paul Hicks - Lamme Goedzak and friends - 28 mm - 35 Points

These figures are the CRISIS 2017 Antwerp figures. For those who has been there they know there was always an entry figure in the goodie bag. That year it was Tijl Uilenspiegel and you could buy two extra figures and a base. And one of the extra figures was Lamme Goedzak, a man that like food and wine very much. Two things on the figure point in that direction, a spoon and a rabbit. the third figure is Nele, girlfriend of Tijl. For this circle I couldn't seperate them.

Greed - Crescent - Sheriff of Nothingham - 54 mm - 30 Points

This figure made by Crescent joined the gang of Prince John for more power and fill his pockets. That's why I choose him for thsi circle. You can find him as an original Crescent figure but also from Kellogg's. Only the markings under the base can make that clear. This one I'm showing is original. I only have the Kellogg's figures complete and unpainted. This one had some paint on him so now he looks better. The color pallet I took was random.

Wrath - 3D - Plague Doctor - 54 mm - 30 Points

The plague was also known as "The Wrath of God" and therefor this doctor is the ideal figure for this circle. The figure is a 3D print (no brand) made by a German friend of me. I paint these figures for my wife because she reads everything that has the plague as subject. The first one was from Speira Miniatures (= link to my blog) and since then I collect and paint them for her. Second one can be found here. I have some more to paint but not now.

Points:

- Wrath                   = 20 Points

- 1 x 54 mm figure = 10 Points

- Total                     = 30 Points

Dulcop - Robin Hood Merry Man - 54 mm - 10 Points

I couldn't paint that villian of Nothingham without one of the heroes to give some resistance. An old Italian figure, hard to get like the Napoleonic figures. Lovely figure to paint and I'm happy with the result.

- 1 x 54 mm figure = 10 Points

Waterloo1815 - Roger's Rangers - 20 mm - 38 Points

These figures were lying way to long in a box unpainted. I've got one sprue of these from a swap with a friend. When I started on them I saw two figures with snow shoes and the other eight without. So I based two groups on gras and the others in the snow. I base these figure only for storage as I'm not a wargamer. A review of these figures can be found on Plastic Soldier Review.

Boxart

I've painted the edges of the bases red to mark them as British troops. I know that the rules say that a lying figure is only half of the points, and I counted him that way, but I'm not sure that the figure is really lying. I've painted the whole figure before it was put on the base because most of the equipment he's wearing is visible. I let it to Teemu to make a decission.

Points:

TeemuL: Wonderful and varied entry, I especially like your Sheriff of Nottingham and the Plague Doctor. Great colours on them! No issues with the others, either, I find your brushwork pleasing my eyes. Quite a grab of bonus points, too. I'll give you full points for the half lying mini, because 1) you say you fully painted him and 2) I'm the bestest of minions.

From PeteB: Valdemar - Lady In Red [Lust] (30 Points)

I have these figures for a very long time in my collection but never found an occasion to paint them. Now with the AHPC the occasion was there. The theme "lust" in the Divine Comedy invited to do this and here they are, the lady in red with a gentleman who has an excellent view. These Valdemar figures are hard to get these days because they aren't in production any more, as far as I know. Painting these wasn't as easy as I thought it would be. The space between the figures wasn't big and so some parts were hard to reach for painting. But I'm pleased with the final result. I hope you like it to.

Well this was my first of the year and so far I like this challenge. It really works to get some things done on the paintiing desk. Figures that have in a box for far too long now get a chance to see some paint on them. Like these two!

TeemuL: Excellent entry, Pete! I like your comparison photo taken outside, it is hard to say which ones are better, they are different, but I can't say which I prefer. I would have preferred some closeups to better see the... brushwork, even though I understand the problems with 20mm minis and they being close to each other - it is not easy to take close up photos, if you are not perfectly happy with your work. But at least it looks great from this distance. I'll add couple of bonus points for the quite large base you have created for them.

From PeterA: 28mm Medraut, Lust & 15mm Imperial Fist Breachers (65 points)

My second entry is a bit of a mix. First up, is my entry for the Second Circle of the Abyss - Lust. Earlier this year, TFL released Midgard Heroic Battles, a set of rules for fighting "Historical, legendary and fantasy battles in an age of heroic deeds", perfect for fighting battles in the Age of Arthur. One of my aims during the Challenge is to complete some Romano-British and Saxon units for Midgard, but in the meantime I have painted up Medraut, or Mordred, whose lust for power led to the strife of Camlann and the ruin of Arthur's Britain (or so Bernard Cromwell would have us believe!). As such, he seemed a perfect candidate for the Second Circle. I have actually used the Welsh spelling from Patrick McCormack's books - The Last Companion, The White Phantom & The Lame Dancer - which are fantastic re-tellings of the Arthurian story, taking more inspiration from Welsh legends and tales. Well worth a read!

The figure is actually a Victrix plastic Saxon from their Early Saxon Armoured Warriors box set. Victrix also do a Late Roman set which I am using for the Romano-British, but I wanted a less 'Roman' looking figure for Medraut (and I wanted to use the fancy 'Sutton Hoo' style helmet!). Hence a round rather than an oval shield as well. Each figure comes with several options for weapons; I have opted for a sword and a couple of javelins. The shield is decorated with a Little Big Man transfer - I take my hat off to those who hand paint shields but that is way beyond my skill level!

Painted using mostly AK 3G paints, although his red tunic was painted using a red from the newish Army Painter Fanatic range, which I am finding very nice indeed.

Part two are 20 Imperial Fists Breachers for the Horus Heresy. I have loved this setting since Epic Space Marine came out in 1989, but 6mm (or whatever scale GW's Legions Imperialis is) is too small for me these days, so these are 3d prints scaled up and printed out at 15mm for me by my son. These are in Mk III armour, the sexiest type of Space Marine armour! They are quickly painted mainly using Contrast paints: white primer, a wash of GW Aggaros Dunes to add some shading and then a coat of GW Imperial Fist Yellow - nice and quick, as I am going for the mass ranked effect rather than trying to paint each one as if they were 28mm figures. Having said that, I did try and paint a muzzle burn effect on the melta guns! The shields could do with the Legion symbol on them but see my comment above about me and hand painting heraldry - maybe I will get some of GW's transfers at some point in the future.

The figures are individually based on coins and they are then mounted on an MDF movement base which has magnetic sheet stuck on it - this way I can remove individual casualties if needs be, moving the unit is nice and quick and I can also use the figures for smaller size skirmishes.

Points wise, I think this works out as 65 points:

- 1x 28mm figure (5) 

- Lust theme bonus (20)

- 20x 15mm figures (40) - this also gets me up and running in the Horus Heresy side duel, although I have some way to go given the rate at which GregB is churning our amazing figures!

Mordred (Medraut) is a fabulous entry for the 'Lust' theme. Good one Peter. I love the mini you've chosen and you've really done him justice with your brushwork. Great photos and background too!

I also really like your 15mm Imperial Fist Breachers. Many of the guys here in the Canadian Prairies have been doing 30K in 15mm for a few years now. It's such a great scale for the 'period' with the ranges and vehicles looking more 'right' on the tabletop. And you're absolutely right, the MkIII armour is the best. :)

From PeteB - Hagen-Miniatures Wild West Townsman - 28 mm - Limbo - 25 Points

This figure is a 28mm figure from Hagen-Miniatures which I started long time ago but never finished. And now I did. They have some more of this Wild West townsfolks but I’m not sure if I will get to them this challenge.

Painting this figure was fun, and for the first time I painted eyes on such small figure. Normally I only do this on my bigger 54 mm figures but this time I couldn't resist trying it on this one. And I like the result. He is part of a small project where I'm working on.

Hey Peter. I can see that it's a figure, and probably very well painted, but the lighting is so off that one cannot really discern much of the details. Similar to my advice to Gavin, I suggest you not photograph your work against a white background as the camera will often underexpose the figure. Try using a darker background and good frontal lighting and the contrast balance should correct itself.

From PeterA - 28mm Star Wars Shoretroopers, Limbo (55 points)

Hello to all Challenge Participants from a wet and (very) windy UK! I haven't taken part in the Challenge for a few years, so I am looking forward to seeing what everyone produces and what I can complete over the coming months. 

For my first AHPC XV entry I have a small squad of Shoretroopers for the Star Wars Legion game. I got these figures a couple of years ago when FFG did a bundle deal for their Star Wars Legion game, but I didn't really enjoy the rules, so the figures languished at the bottom of the lead pile, primed but nothing more. Then, about a month ago I came across 5 Parsecs from Home by Ivan Sorenson, a solo sci-fi skirmish game with some RPG-lite elements, and this inspired me to dig out the Star Wars figures to build some small forces for games set in a galaxy far, far away. Having not done anything with these figures for two years, this also seems like a good way to start the Divine Comedy, and so this is also an entry for The First Circle: Limbo!

I loved the look of the Shoretroopers in Rogue One, and so have adopted a broadly similar colour scheme, mostly using various Contrast paints over an Army Painter Skeleton Bone basecoat. The benefit of this is that they were quite quick to paint to a 'table ready' standard. They all have a squad marking in red on their right arm and the squad leader has light blue markings on his chest and left arm. 

So 7x28mm figures plus the Limbo bonus should net me 55 points (I know SWL figures are bigger than 28mm, but this seems the best fit in terms of scoring). The backdrop in the photos is by John Hodgson from his Sci-Fi backdrops book - thoroughly recommended.

Welcome back to the Challenge Peter - it's great to have you in the scrum again! 

These Shoretroopers look terrific in all their Light Armour Club Med glory. Great brushwork and wonderful terrain too! I remember first seeing the Shoretroopers in 'Rogue One' and thinking that they guys must come from influential Imperial families. Who else would get posted to a tropical paradise guarding an archive. Tough gig! They must have been sooo p*ssed when the Rebels dropped in with the Deathstar in tow. 'The scheduled beachside evening Mai Tais have been cancelled due to orbital turbolaser bombardment...'

Great idea to repurpose these minis for 'Five Parsecs From Home' (great rules) and as an added bonus it allows you to snag another 20 theme points. Great stuff!

Also, thanks for the tip on the John Hodgson backdrops. I'm now just plotting which ones I want to get for myself. Cheers!
