From PeterB - Chaos Warhammer - 70 points

We had a mini warhammer tournament at the weekend at our club. Once we agreed on some rules to make it not a dragon stomping affair I realised I needed just a few extra core troops to make up the points. So a delve in the bits box and I found these chaos warriors that I am sure used to be part of a Battle Masters set.

An evenings painting and they were ready for battle.

I also need a giant Chaos Spawn but I'm not going to claim any points for this as the front half was already painted. I had a Reaper Bones model that didn't look intimidating enough for the base size it required.

So, a plastic sprue skeleton and some green stuff gave this worm a tail poking out. The pincers are the end of peasants pitchfork.

Our next full day game session is probably going to be a big Siege scenario, as I was delving I also found various pieces of metal that actually made up this:
I was just missing one wheel, but the replacement I found I think makes it look more cobbled together. The end ram piece was missing but I think the skull I found is a good replacement.

So points, like I said I'm not claiming the worm.

Chaos warriors at 28mm
10 x 5 equals 50 points.

Siege wagon at 28mm
20 points?
Total 70 points.

I had instant nostalgia at the mention of 'Battle Masters' - so awesome and they look terrific all ranked-up ready to rumble. I also really admire your Chaos Spawn, especially the scary tail barbs. Your intro photo for the siege engine was corrupted (replace if you have the time), but the front-on shot is suitably impressive with that bronze horned skull. Barks will be most pleased.

Fabulous work Peter! 70 points it is.

From KyleC - Khorne Kontinues (Sarah's Cart) ( 60 pts )

So another week, and I was able to get a few more models painted up for this Khornish raiding party here...

Worked on a few Heroes ( Lord, BSB, Aspiring ) for my character section, and then another 5 of the marauders to bolster the unit a bit further.

Big boss on foot here.. again from the Age of Sigmar range for Blades of Khorne. I have like 4 or 6 of these models due to how many of the starter boxes I procured way back when I first wanted to try building this army ( spoiler.. never got too far off the ground ). So now I have a few that I can chop up and use for different projects like this one. He is normally accompanied by a flesh hound, but chopping the reins off, he just looks to have a nasty hand weapon there instead.

Same red armor I have on the newer models, but I tried a stippling/lines approach to the cloak to make it a bit different, even though the colors used are exactly the same here.

Another model I have multiples of from the starter box. In Age of Sigmar he is a cool model buffing those around him to new heights of frenzy... in the Old World.. he is just a Battle Standard Bearer but can take magical banners up to 100 points. Combined with the other model, and stuck in a unit of Warriors, I suspect they will have some lasting power for smaller games.

Tried to use more purples/reds in the skintones here.. not fully sold on it..

The Warqueen Marakarr Blood-Sky! A figure I have no idea why I picked up, but she's for Warriors of Chaos, and will look great leading some marauders, so figured she was a good model to paint up! Again playing with the cloak, but going a bit brighter in the red as she doesn't have a lot of armor that I could or would paint red here.

She is also my contribution to Sarah's Cart.. to travel to the Rotunda First floor.. just not sure which section, but most likely Sci Fi.. unless I score something on my trip coming up..

5 more Marauders made from the Blood Reavers. And the Banner boi getting a massive banner from the Juggernaut set.. Practical in Age of Sigmar as they are individuals and don't need to rank up.. in ToW.. not so practical.. but one unit of Marauders can be skirmishers, so that might be these in the end.

Thankfully they are still able to rank up so far, and this now gives me 15 of them. 5 more and that will be a full unit, and I can then go and focus on something else! I am liking that the extra effort/time I am putting to the multiple skintones is making the unit look more interesting. And that the few parts of red painted really are vibrant on the overall unit. Going to have to be careful when I get to the warriors then, and see how to keep it up!

But for now, I am off to India for a work conference. So one of our other minions will take on the Sunday role, and I am unlikely to have any post of models to showcase next weekend as I won't have anything hobby related with me next week. Though depending on what socials, I might have a few snaps from the trip itself.

Total for today's post then are:

- 3 28mm Infantry Heroes - 15 pts

- 5 28mm Infantry models - 25 pts

- Sarah's Cart entry - 20 pts

Total 60 pts for today

Some more excellent kernels (geddit??) from you here Kyle. They all look quite nasty and ready for some skull-taking and blood-spilling. The Blood God will be pleased and Sarah's Library Cart will transport you to the First Floor Rotunda and the Sci-Fi stack!

60 points for your tally as well!

From KyleC - Reinforcements (Fantasy) (95 PTS)

So the Warriors of Chaos army project continues to grow.. though the lighting in my garage is not the best for army photos.. 😔

First with some Marauders and then also a powerful Chariot.

So first up.. after the test model the other week, I spent the last 2 weeks working on these guys bit by bit.

Spending a bit more time on each model to give a bit of variation on the skintones. Playing with basic skin colors but also different shades of grey and cream colors to give some hues throughout the unit.

The armor I did not go full red as they are but Marauders. Not yet worthy of the fully blooded armor that the warriors receive. So between the darker black lower armor, the lighter sun averse skintones.. the reds they do get pop a bit further.

Next real step will be to sand and paint the movement trays, but I do plan to do that for the whole army together.

Now the big baddie here.. the Chaos Chariot blessed by Khorne. Ready to run over his enemies to feed him with skulls and blood. And even rocky terrain won't deter them from their mission.

I have had this part assembled in pieces ready for painting since well before COVID was a thing.

I am glad that I waited though as the motivation for painting it was much higher now, and the amount of effort I could put into it

Plus for the first time in a long time I am liking how this red came out. A good mix of GW reds wet blended and stippled on top of each other. With a dark burgundy wash in the shadows. But I was finding it too unsaturated.. so I then glazed the Blood Red Contrast thinned over if all. Before tackling the highlights once more to just push it that much further.

The base is corkboard, dirt, pebbles, and some resin printed bits before tufts of grass were added.

Fantasy section completed now.

So altogether we get a nice addition to the army and some points for the trouble also.

9*5 pt Infantry = 45 pts
1*20 pt chariot/vehicle = 20 pts
2*5 pt riders = 10 pts
Fantasy section = 20 pts
Total 95 pts

Couple characters and more troops to come next..

Really nice Chaos models here Kyle! With the return of ersatz-Warhammer Fantasy Battle the thoughts of many are turning back to square bases and your work is really fuelling that excitement. I agree with you that the red looks great. Good work and 95 points for you!

From KyleC - Khorne Continues (Overdue&Returns) - (86 pts)

So the armies of the northern wastes continue across my desk this week. Still struggling with the cold and a cold, but some downtime has given me a chance to put some effort into painting.. and here are the results!

First up a unit of Ogroid Theridons from Warriors of Chaos (WoC) in Age of Sigmar (AoS).. that have been repurposed to be Chaos Ogres for my WoC army for The Old World (ToW) instead. Hefty beasts of burden with massive axes to chop through any and all that get in their way... at least that is what I hope they will do..

Absolutely PITA to get to rank up though. Really not meant for ToW, or for ranking up but with some finagling they lined up int he end.. But I wouldn't bet on getting a second rank in on them anytime soon!

Now for the overdue portion of the post... the unit I am calling The Forsaken.. so aptly named as I have no clue where I received or picked these up from, but looking online they hail from the times of Realm of Chaos and 1st/2nd edition of Warhammer. Pure metal, and after a few coats of gloss varnish before a black primer, I had a good base to make some angry little warriors.

I have plans for regular warriors for the army, so instead for these they will be used for the actual unit called The Forsaken.. mutants of the army and just a mess to manage... much like this unit was..

But ranked up they look the business and they were relaxing to paint once I got the initial color scheme nailed down. They might have too much red as a grouping or on each model, but they are literally just full armor warriors.. with only the odd one with boots of gloves..

Slapping them all together now we can see the army growing nicely ( and also show how large the Lord on his Monstrous mount ( 50x75 base there ). Is this the greatest list to be using for gaming... no.. not even close.. but is it thematic so far, and coming together chaotically?? Very much so and so fits nicely to how I wish this to be!

Last up I have is the test of the actual chaff unit for the army.. the Musician for the Marauder unit. Which I have taken as being the reavers from the Blades of Khorne forces in AoS. An army that I have wanted to do and have build up, but never got painted. So re-purposing them for this army feels right. Static grass to be applied when he sits with the unit as a whole so I can see how and where the tufts will look best.

Really enjoyed painting the skintones on this guy.. spent a fair bit of time on it with having to go back into the shadows a bit harder as it was originally very washed out. But the grey undertones really helped the model.

Unit as a whole will be a bit darker than the other units. As they haven't fully proved their worth or merit to the almighty Khorne lords, and thus are only allowed portions of red armor compared to those that have bathed in the enemies blood for so long! Or something to that effect..

3rd topic now completed in the Library.. though not focusing on it so much this year, figured that this fit the criteria so would be a shame not to include Curt and company's hard work on the Library Challenge into the post!

Points wise, we have:
    - 3 x 40mm Ogres - 21 pts
    - 8 x 28mm Warriors - 40 pts
    - 1 x 28mm Marauder - 5 pts
    - Overdue and Returns Topic Bonus - 20 pts
Giving us 86 pts for today's post.

With a focus on getting more of the Marauders finished over the coming week.. though crazy week for work incoming so not sure how many will actually get completed there!

Whoa now those guys look... pretty scary Kyle, nice work on those minions of the Blood God. My favourites of course are the old-school metal Chaos Warriors, to my mind they've never been beat in terms of cool sculpts. I have a ton of them in my old WHFB Chaos Warriors army and they are just - COOL. 86 points added to your tally!

From SanderS: Lady Sarah's Yacht to Glorantha and Glorantha Heroquest figures (70 points)

 Hoi,

When the Challenge started I wanted to actually enter 4 entries in each ring as well as finish the final quest, now (after the two weeks I lost during our renovation works) I would be happy to just reach Noel's Comet... So here are the first steps towards that goal and therefore I need to hitch a hike on the LSY towards Glorantha.

The female figure I would like to enter for this is a Blood Bowl Star Player (pun intended) called Zara, clearly inspired upon Karla von Kill. I have painted her in the colours of my soon to be painted human team "The Middenheim Marauders".

She will bring me 5 points for the figure and 20 points for using the yacht.

The Yacht will bring me to Glorantha were I need to enter something "quest-ish", that should present no problem at all: I have heaps of Heroquest figures in stock.

I chose to paint up these Chaos warriors as I really need them for the quests we are playing at the moment.

There's one for Tzeentch, one for Khorne, one for Slaneesh and two for Nurgle since I have two core boxes one of which still needs a fourth Warrior.

Pointswise the planet Glorantha will allow me another 25 points for the 5 Chaos Warriors and 20 points for the planet. The two locale's combined will net me 70 points

Next to Glorantha is a Warp Maelstrom that will allow me access to the Middle Ring for next week's installment.

Cheers Sander

Lovely stuff, Sander! That's another 70 points in the bag for you!

So, you want to take the Maelstrom to the Middle Ring? OK, well, I'll drop you off at...Cybertron. Yes, Cybertron should do it!

Heroquest Chaos Warrior - The armoury, Mark Backhouse (25 points)

For the armoury the next challenge was something armoured. Along with painting lots of ancients in 2mm I’m also painting a few Realms of Chaos Oldhammer figures as a bit of escapism. I managed to find a few old Chaos Warriors and decided they deserved a repaint. I’d seen some beautiful repainted Heroquest figures recently which served as inspiration. The best thing about Heroquest certainly isn’t the Barbarian, no sir! This figure is the best! This one was painted in blue to be a warrior of Tzeentch as I’ve already got a champion for Khorne and Slaanesh. I might do the others as servers of other dark gods later, and it would be rude not to convert one as a champion of Nurgle at a later date.

For a single piece plastic figure from thirty years ago I think he came out really nicely. The simplicity of the figure made him a real pleasure to paint. I’ll add some daft backstory to him and enjoy reliving my youth with a few games with him.

I’d actually painted this chap right at the start of the challenge but saved him for this room in the dungeon.
Hopefully had ticks the armoured figure requirements nicely for the challenge so I make that 20 points for the challenge and 5 for the single 28mm figure. A total of 25 points.
On now to the hall of ancestors... hmmm I wonder what I could do for that?
Cheers

From EricM: A Chaotic Diversion--Games Workshop Slaves to Darkness (60 Points)

Its official, I have fallen to Chaos.  Games Workshop is the devil.  While it has been quite sometime since I have been interested in Games Workshop. I do really like the changes they have made in the last few years, improving their model range, bringing back some classic games.  I have been able to avoid falling into the eye candy trap they set for me and just observe from the shadows... until now.  A month or so ago they released their new Slaves to Darkness line, it's game over now.

I picked up the start collecting box which has a Chaos Lord, 10 Chaos Warriors and 5 mounted Chaos Knights.  They have made some huge improvements to their design and production processes, which has allowed them to make some incredibly dynamic and interesting poses.  All this while making a snap fit kit, this whole kit can be (in theory) assembled without glue.  For me it required some glue and a lot of cursing and gnashing of teeth. While it took a bit of patience the kit went together pretty smoothly, its a bit of an engineering marvel in my opinion.

The first figures I attempted were the Chaos Warriors.

These guys were a blast to paint.  I had to learn how to do the extreme edge highlighting, which as you can see is still a work in progress.  I think I need to go one level brighter on the edge. Here are some close ups

I think its a little bit sadistic to make models with huge spikes and advertise it as push fit.

These guys are supposed to be heroic 28mm (I think) but they are massive compared to the older Chaos range.

Next up was the Chaos Lord.   He was a tougher assembly but man he is a cool figure.

This guy was a challenge to paint.  The way he is constructed makes it hard to paint in sub-assembly and the amount of detail on him is daunting. He was like trying to paint a baseball that weighed as much as a feather. But I am really happy with him.

Here is the full class picture.

Chaos Knights and my Challenge Island award figure are up next.

Here is the tally: 10 x 28mm foot, 1 x 28mm mounted.

***

Hello again Eric - while Chaos is not my "thing", I can certainly relate to the feeling of caving in on many, many other GW products and lines (*cough* Horus Heresy *cough*).  I think its great that you have found some figures that you clearly love and are having so much fun painting (challenges about spiky-push-models aside).  Your energy really shines through, and you should be pleased with the results - these fellows look more than ready to go torch villages throughout the Empire fight hard for their Chaos Gods in whatever version of GW's setting that is current.

I did laugh at your mention of allegedly not requiring glue - the push-together model that works for gaming is an urban legend, and I have yet to encounter such a model that doesn't actually require glue in order to hold together and be used on the gaming table.

We look forward to your next submissions...and judging by the "New Posts" screen, it looks as though we won't be waiting long...

From TeemuL: Slambo (5 points)

After not winning the side duel, I have been slowing down. And still running out of prepped minis and hobby time. But as always, I managed to get something done on this week (in addition to the bonus round entry). Let me present mister Slambo to you.

Slambo has visited this challenge blog earlier this year, too, but he has just seems to like attention, so here's my interpretation of him. Although the two axes might hint to the Khorne, I decided to paint him Nurgle colors. Quite strangely, with the current rules of the Age of Sigmar, he can't take Mark of any Chaos god, he then fights for all of them - or no one. He is the one man army anyway.

He is a resin model from the Games Workshop. Sculpted and released last year, but based on the original Slambo miniature from the 80s. I really like those old plastic Chaos Warriors, so he fits nicely with them.

Painting was actually quite simple and fast, but looks very good - in my opinion. Especially the horns on the helmet are something I personally like.

He is a big taller than average 28mm miniatures, but I think 5 points is good for him.

What a beast Teemlu, you certainly wouldn't want to upset this chap in a bar!  Lovely use of colour, especially the blending on the horns.  Nicely done Sir.
