From TamsinP: Agent Lake Busts Dredd [Limo][Superheroes] (75 points)

I've discovered that the Show Lord isn't making public announcements of the Director's chair tasks this year. Just so you all know, here is the task he set me:

"Tamsin, I've noticed your marked bemusement at our Turnip28 efforts, so I think it's only fair that you be properly inducted into the madness. To break you in gently, let's see you paint a 28mm vehicle to look like a root vegetable."

Gulp! OK, in reality it's to paint that 28mm 100 Ton Type S Scout-Courier spaceship with a mostly orange exterior, and some green bits - to look like a carrot (I knew that joking comment would come back to haunt me! Damn my big mouth!).

I am making progress on that and should finish it before the end of the Challenge. In the meantime, to give me a break and keep my points tally going up, I'm continuing with my tour of the studios.

Lady Sarah's Limousine - Agent Lake

I'm using this figure from Artizan Designs to hop a ride in Lady Sarah's superb limo from the Casting Couch to the Superheroes studio.

It was quite a quick paintjob - flesh; hair; dress and shoes; gun; some lippy; the puddle base.

I decided to experiment a little - normally when I do purple, I tend to highlight up towards the blue spectrum; this time I decided to push the other way, towards red. It came out rather well on the dress.

Superheroes Studio - Judge Dredd Bust

A few weeks ago, I painted up a 50% scale 3D print of this bust for the Black & White studio. This time, I've taken the 75% scale print I mentioned back then, and painted a colour version.

Hero to some, villain to others...probably best to call him an antihero.

But is he a superantihero? He's just an ordinary man, albeit tough and highly trained, isn't he?

The way I see it, if Batman and Iron Man are classed as superheroes despite being ordinary humans who are only able to do the things they do because being multi-billionaires allows them to access lots of high-tech gadgetry, then Judge Joseph Dredd must qualify too.

I mean, have either of them arrested and imprisoned Satan? Traveled through time? (OK, thanks to crossovers with the JD comics, Batman has...).

Currently 84 years old, Old Stony Face (the Chin Himself) is still going strong, dispensing justice to the citizens of Mega City One, defending them against enemies foreign, domestic, intergalactic and interdimensional. He's also at least partly a cyborg now - his eyes and some other organs have been replaced with bionic versions at various points in his career.

Yeah, I'd definitely argue that he counts as a superantihero.

"Time for your close-up, Mr Dredd"

In case any of you were thinking that I've just repainted the bust I did for the B&W studio:

The bust is just shy of 15cm tall, 12cm elbow-to-elbow and 6cm front to back.

The previous 50% scale bust was scored as 20 points - I'll suggest 30 points for this one (but will happily accept more if Minion Phil thinks that is more appropriate!).

For Scoring

1 x 28mm foot @ 5 = 5 points

1x Bust @30 = 30 points

2 x studio @ 20 = 40 points

Total = 75 points

Friday Minion: Awesome work here Tamsin! Glad we see the bigger Dredd bust in the challenge. This may be me being a bit of a philistine over artsy black and white things, but I think I prefer this one: superb rendition of the judge, great work on his stubble and that muted NMM gold suits him just perfectly. Your extensive Minion experience is clearly showing through, as I think 30 points plus the studio bonus is a very fair scoring bid, that is after all the score for a 54mm (!) vehicle (have we EVER seen one of those?)

Looking forward to the giant grimdark space carrot and your inevitable descent into the madness that is root vegetable-based combat. 

From KyleC - Arthouse - (120 points)

So more painting though less than previous weeks.. 

First off the finishing of some D&D bits for the forthcoming game this weekend. 

A pet spider for one of the characters. Needed to be scary and dark so this hit the spot. Model 3d printed from Loot Studios and painted with contrast and wash paints. 

For myself I painted a few variations of what my character would be. Have asked the group advice on which one to take to play with but will put it out to my fellow bloggers here in their thoughts also. 

The DM also requires an arcane object for the mission this weekend.. so I came up with this item from CastnPlay..

Very simple and easy to get done and should do the job there.. 

Then I also painted a small warband of English Civil War models in a test scheme for a London Brigade. 

Received these models last week from a friend alongside a model I bought from him. He figured it would be better in my hands than his as the likelihood of getting paint was higher here.. seems that was correct. I was trialing out a color scheme for my wider ECW army project from years ago that I plan to tackle this year. And I think it came out ok? 

Only issue here was no pike's for 3 models but as a trial I am ok with that. And also them being on round bases I figure I can also use them for some sort of skirmish warband styled gaming in the future also. 

Now the Arthouse Studio Entry. Was really enamored with PeterBs go at a Bust. And I haven't painted one of them for a while. So I thought I would give it a go. 

Have printed out this Zodiac Bust by Yedharo models and their KS. This is the Cancer sign in Bust format. Which is my Son's Zodiac Sign. Figures he is that sign considering how good he is at swimming and being 14 how cranky (crabby) he can be when he wakes for school these days 😏

I wanted to play around with the color blue. And try to make it feel like it's under water or water based? I had started with airbrushing blue tones on it from below and above. And then began to play with it some from there. Can say that a few trials later, some restarts and repriming, I finally gave up after several hours of painting and errors. 

So ended up slapping metal over a few spots instead of trying to finish up the NMM styled technique I had trialed on the helmet and armor sections.

But I am ok with it in the end, and my son thinks it's cool. So now to go and finish up one for myself and my partner. Being Sagittarius and Capricorn. 

It's not a massive bust sitting at about 60mm tall but packs enough details to make it interesting all the same.

Great stuff here Kyle that spider is nasty looking and I really like that Arcane Object.  I'm sure I could figure out what it does if I play with the various bits long enough....

I like the let people choose which mini to represent your DnD character.  I'd go with Mr Non-Chalant under the lantern if I get a vote.  personally I'd never let my gaming buddies choose my mini out of fear, 

Nice collection of ECW types and that Bust is awesome, love the blue effects.  Good luck with the crabby 14 year old.   My experience with parenting is that the first 27 years are the worst.  Since Miles awarded 40 points on PeterB’s bust at 140mm, I’ll go with 20 points for your 60mm bust.

I'll need to figure out the points value of that bust and let the Snowlord work on an appropriate task (perhaps finding Miles....).

From PeterB - A Viking Bust - Art House - 80 Points

 

Well met fellow Challengers, it has been a fortnight. A bout of mystery illness and extra weekend working slowed my work a little so I unfortunately did not have anything to post last week. I am however back with a vengeance.  

After successfully completing the full house last week with my faithful Green Security Pass leaving me at the Casting Couch studio, I now have no choice but to attempt to collect a full set of Blues.

With my newly acquired Blue Security Pass around my neck (I am sure Tour Guide Tamsin could provide a suitable lanyard so I don't lose it) a quick hop down the path and I am at Studio Art House.

On the theme of Art House, I have been meaning to have another attempt at painting a 3D printed bust a friend of mine asked me to paint for him a while ago. I really enjoyed the task, so I asked if he minded printing another one for myself with the intention of possibly entering in a painting competition at the next show I go to. Don't get me wrong, I don't think I am anywhere near good enough to win anything, but I just thought I would do it for the experience. Doing this hobby has helped me to keep challenging myself. Writing my blog, meeting new people, chatting to strangers at shows, it keeps the mind fresh. Why not get the adrenaline rushing with a little competition as well?

The paints are all Coat D'arms and Citadel paints, but there are lots of mixes going on. I tried to avoid using washes and inks to avoid the shine they produce, instead opting to make washes by just watering down the acrylic paint with water.

I have had the piece a good couple of months while waiting for me to paint it, I was saving it for the challenge. I did think about changing the colour scheme from my first attempt, but it is pretty similar to last time. The main differences are the washes being my own mix this time. I can't promise I won't have another go at him before April when I go to Salute, but for now I am happy with him.

Minion MilesR: Wow that's not a mini - its a piece of art.  Amazing painting - at 140mm tall, I think he's worth 40 points and that's still stingy.  As for mercy, well Gus and I need to confer......  OK we voted and mercy was approved by 2 votes to 1.  Gus says Dogs get 2 votes.  Mercy shall be granted - THIS time...  80 points total for you

From TamsinP: Dredd Busts A StuG [B&W; Under Construction] (72 points)

 It's been a while now since my first entry. I was rather ill for the week between Christmas and New Year and the following week I was recovering and catching up on all the things I hadn't been able to do while ill. I did get back to painting last week, but didn't quite finish the piece I was working on in time to submit it on Friday so I've had to hold that over to this week. Which means you actually get two entries today (in one post).

Dredd Bust

For the Black & White studio, I offer up this bust of Judge Joseph Dredd. I found the file on Thingiverse: linky-link 

This is a FDM (= filament) print; I scaled it down to 50% from the original.

I didn't get the contrast quite right on the shoulder pieces, but I did emulate the classic highlights on the visor quite nicely.

The bust is 100mm tall including the base, 75mm wide (elbow to elbow) and about 30mm deep. 

I also printed it at 75% and 25% of the original size. At some point I might print it full size as well (or maybe bigger - my printer might just manage 125%).

And that gives me my second studio in the Green zone.

German AFVs

For the "Under Construction" studio I had far too many options, but in the end I settled for revisiting a more recent project that I'd hit a block with. I started work on the AFVs back in August and got them mostly done. They were looking good up to the point when I decided to apply an oil wash which acted more as a filter and darkened everything. I couldn't see any way to easily get back from that and just stuffed them away in a drawer until this week.

I eventually decided to get over the oil "filter" by making them look dusty. I did that by airbrushing a very thin coat of beige from above and then a slightly thicker mix of light brown and pale grey from below and in front. 

The two crew figures here hadn't been started until this week, so I'm able to claim some points for them!

And these three AFVs and two crew give me my third green zone studio.

These are all plastic kit models from Warlord Games.

Now that I'm back in the swing of things, hopefully next week's submission will be rather more fruitful and will see me visit several studios.

Friday Minion - Sorry to hear you were under the weather Tamsin, but glad you're feeling better and back at the brushes now. Your greyscale Dredd bust is frickin' awesome, and a really nice finish for an FDM print. I know how tricky it can be to get those dialled in . And lovely brushwork on it too, I'm gonna use the powers invested in me as a Minion to issue five bonus points for it being so damn cool.

Glad you salvaged those German AFVs too. I've not had much luck using oil filters myself. Did you try using some thinners to work the wash off? Still, I think you've salvaged them, they'll look fine at a tabletop distance and they're done now, isn't that more satisfying than languishing in a drawer?
