From RhysH - Basileans and Werewolves

Rhys' entry this week is more troops for his Mantic Basileans and two Wargames Atlantic Werewolves.

First up are three Elohi, monstrous infantry for the Basileans.

These are big models, 54mm. That's a 28mm Wargames Atlantic werewolf next to him.

Kings of War has a lot of options for unit sizes but three is a normal size for these guys.

Their wings are quite nice, even if the rest of them is a little bit bendy.

Next up are two battle cats for the Basileans. It's really one and a mount with no rider, but who's really counting.

The one on the right is from Vanguard and is noticeably better than the older one.

You can really see the armor from this angle.

They are both very dynamic poses.

Continuing the theme are nine panther riders. In the Basilean army the light troops are female and their fast cavalry are riding these big cats.

Lances and shields, but light armor.

Rhys followed the colors of the studio army with blue and white tabards.

Again, you can see the dynamism of the poses of these models. They are soft PVC plastic, but if they get re-done in hard plastic they will be pretty amazing.

The last entry is two Wargames Atlantic werewolves. I bought this box for Silver Bayonet and Rhys managed to talk me out of two of them for LotR/MESBG.

These are a new release, perfectly timed for The Silver Bayonet. They are a very nice modular kit with lots of options for posing.

Rhys went for a darker, grassier base on these than he normally chooses.

These stand the same height as a 28mm figure. Many werewolves are significantly bigger than the humans they turned out of. Rhys and I like the size on these.

This entry is:

Two 28mm infantry x 5pts = 10pts

Two 28mm cats x 5pts = 10pts

Nine 28mm cavalry x 10pts = 90pts

Three 54mm Infantry x 10pts = 30pts

Total = 140pts

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Oh what a bunch of nasty beasties! Well done!

You must have had alot of fun with these bad boyz ... I particularly like the wings on the Elohi Infantry. and werewolves are always scary, especially giant ones!

I'm looking forward to seeing what you next paint

Cheers

From MattT: Protect the Eagle (35 points)

With this post I am adding a few more bits to The Silver Bayonet Project.

First up is a trio of wolves that I painted in the same palette as the wolf pelts on my vampire. I'm not sure how they feel about him wearing their siblings but it ties the models together nicely.

Next are some additions to my zombie horde. After the first post I felt they needed an eagle, so i bashed on together with plastic Napoleonic and zombie parts. Also created a little guard to keep it safe.

Lastly a group shot.

7 x 28mm = 35 pts

Your Silver Bayonet project is really moving forward with these figures, Matt! The wolves look great, and suitably hungry. I find your Napoleonic zombies rather... disturbing, as a French Napoleonic aficianado, but also very creative and well done! The eagle and its guard will surely lead your hordes on to glory, if not honour. 35 points it is.

From RayR: The Retreat from Moscow meets The Silver Bayonet (42 points)

For my second entry of the day I've gone all silver Bayonet on ya! I've no real interest in the game Silver Bayonet, but I've been a long admirer of the figures produced for the rules, they're so full of character. So I took full advantage of the recent offer from North Star, where you could buy the figures individually, rather than the unit boxes they usually sell in.

I managed to get this unit finished in time to take some pics and post it up. Sitting them on a radiator to help them dry quicker did help!

I painted the figures at the back first, the chap back o the left was supposed to be for my Haitian project, but Haiti's too hot for him,

The figure on the left, has a greenstuff cloak added

as does the Cuirassier on the right, all the others are as they came in the post. Which is a shame, they're both really nice figures and I've hidden all that wonderful detail under a cloak!!
I'm not sure if these will become a unit of stragglers or command figures if I'm being honest, they'll probably be a bit of both in the end.

Points mean prizes and these bad boys will give me 40 points.
8 figures@ 5pts each.

Plus anything Teemu wants to give me for the conversion work ;0)

TeemuL: More winter minis, well done Ray! As before, you have found a nice recipe for snow and frost on minis. Green stuff cloaks are worth couple of points, when asked nicely. And they seem to be nice minis by themselves, it would be nice to see them next to the other parts of your army. They will add some spice to your units, that's for sure.

From Matt T: Who's afraid of the big bad wolf man. (35 points)

I have been slowly making some more progress on my Silver Bayonet project with the addition of a couple of big bad bosses and some henchmen.

First up are a pair of vampires from Games Workshop. I thought they looked the part in all their furs. They are amazing sculpts but they are pretty big compared to my rank and file troopers. I think I can live with the scale difference for the bosses as it gives them that heroic status.

The main man is wearing not one but two wolf pelts. That' a lot of grey on the mini that I tried to give life to by using a couple of different shades of streaking grime.

Of course every evil mastermind needs some minions to do the work for them so I painted up some 3d printed Cossacks in the same livery.

7 x 28mm models = 35 points total

I like these! The bosses are rather scary (although I would have loved to see more photos!). The cossacks look good too in their red and green. Do you remember who makes them?

Anyway, your math is flawless, so 35 points to you!

From EdwardG - A small Napoleonic offering to keep the numbers tally ticking on (25pts)

 Hej hej all,

I beg the forgiveness for a very long lag between submissions. My trip to Tokyo was excellent from a work perspective but a total disaster on the hobby front. Working each day 9-9 with a business dinner after, didn't leave much time or energy to paint once I'd gotten back to the hotel. 😵

So because of all that I'm massively behind my mini painting plan, and I've only got one mini to submit this week.

He's again a 28mm Foundry mini, he's painted in the uniform of a Voltigeur sergeant (heretical because the mini looks to be that of a grenadier!) and I've painted him up for Silver Bayonet. Because it's a fantasy game, I'm going to ask to claim the fantasy section bonus. Pretty please 🙏

Points for the entry:

28mm foot mini = 5pts

Section bonus = 20pts

Total = 25pts

Thanks all! See you in the very near future for a final post. Question is how much can I get done!?! (It can assure, it will be more a points grenade than a bomb...)

Best,

Edward 😀

Konnichi-wa Ed-san.. and welcome back from the land of the rising sun.. which after my trip there had a whole different meaning ( those after work drinking events can go on for a while.. ). Glad you survived, and got a piece painted all the same here!

So.. a fantasy entry with a naps models.. well mate.. given minion discretion here... and considering the proportions on the model is a bit comic like vs realistic.. I guess we can claim it to be fantasy.. this time ;)

25 pts for you

From Millsy: More Silver Bayonet (50 points)

Hi All,

This week I'm back with more Silver Bayonet Napoleonic stuff, this time for the British faction.

These are a mix of the official miniatures from North Star plus some extras from Front Rank to bulk out the standard infantry types who are cheapest points-wise and necessary to field a full 8-man team.

I'm happy enough with the end result but really don't enjoy painting British figures for this period. The uniforms are boring and fiddly to my mind, not a match on the cooler stuff from the continental nations.

When surveyed 87% or respondents chose "I have a picnic blanket that matches that tartan"

Mooks, mooks and more mooks

Stand back lads, I've got this!

So that's 10 x 28mm infantry = 50 points. I've just one more batch of Silver Bayonet stuff to do thankfully!

Thanks for looking!

Cheers,
Millsy

Hello again Millsy, and thank you for another bit of outstanding brushwork. While I understand "Silver Bayonet" to be a supernaturally-oriented game, you are still working on historical basis here, and have absolutely nailed all of the colours. I chuckled at your description of painting British uniforms of the Napoleonic era - I rather like all of the red - but it is not just the red colour, or white straps, that you have absolutely nailed, but the tartan and other accents. All brilliant.

Also have to enjoy any game that refers to the British as a "faction" :)

From EdwardG - Just a quick one (10pts)

 Hej hej,

I know many of the challengers would patently wait and painted a whole crew before publishing a post. Sadly, as I explained last week, my schedule doesn't allow such a luxury. But, I have made a little bit of progress before leaving for Tokyo and I wanted to share.

I cheekily spent some of a very dull all day SteeCo call to paint up these two chaps.

I belive both models are from Foundry. I bought them as part of the same job lot that furnished my first model in this year's challenge. Both were painted with 90-95% contrast paints, mostly for speed but also to test a couple of new colours I have just bought.

The Marshal is part of a set that make up a display piece based on the famous "Napoleon, bored at Borodino, with his foot on a drum" painting. I hope to get through all of these minis, and show the whole group, but it might take me a Challenge or two more at this rate!

The grenadier is not the model as sold. I've made some conversions to better shoehorn him into Silver Bayonet. Originally, this model is sold as an Austrian POW, but I though that wouldn't work without some adjustment. The axe and the horn have been taken from a plastic Vikings box set. I feel they give him at least at bit of an offensive capability. He's painted in the uniform of a Danish grenadier, to allow him to fit as an ally into my otherwise French crew. There are certainly some aspects of the uniform that don't match, but I'm pretty sure most people don't know Danish uniforms well enough to see/care.

Points wise, I belive that I score the following:

2 x 28mm foot = 10pts.

Hope everyone continues to have a great week!

Best,

Ed 😀

Lovely addition to the challenge here Ed. Be it 2 models or 200 in a post, all are welcome and appreciated. Lovely painting on these 2 chaps here.

Have a great trip to Tokyo!

From Millsy: Silver Bayonet 28mm Napoleonics (255 points)

G'day All,

Having decided I needed a rest from painting a pile of individual character-type figures with my Star Wars: Legion stuff I moved on and painted... ummm... a pile of individual character-type figures for Silver Bayonet. The less said about my thought processes there the better I think.

These are a mix of branded Silver Bayonet miniatures from North Star topped up with some Front Rank stuff to bulk out the troop types and a few hangers on from elsewhere. The Silver Bayonet faction sets are great they lack enough basic line troops to get you to a full 8-man roster within a typical points limit. Front Rank stuff can be purchased individually and are a good match from a size and style perspective.

Spanish Faction

Others
Challenge Library - Some Goblins for the Fantasy section.

Deserters and bandits.

Challenge Library - Lady Sarah's Library Cart - Spanish Guerrilla
A rather disgruntled lady guerrilla who looks like my request to ride Lady Sarah's Library Cart across to the Blue Room might be the final straw!

Challenge Library - Famous Person - General Tadeusz Kościuszko
General Tadeusz Kościuszko is a Giant in Miniature from Wargames Illustrated and quite appropriate for "Australia" as a famous person given we named our only proper mountain after him. Not sure about the marble effect on the homemade plinth but I can always revisit in the future (yeah right).

Challenge Library - Romance - "Date Night"
No idea of the provenance of this miniature. It was gifted to me by a mate and had been lurking in the lead pile for years. Quite what happened to lead up to this moment isn't clear. At least she looks relaxed which has to be a good thing right?

Challenge Library - Local History - NSW Corps
The NSW Corps were the first organised military in "Australia", taking over from the marines of the First Fleet. Also known as the Rum Corps for their poor behaviour and trade in illegal rum. Here we see Private G. Burch, terrified half out of his mind at the thought that anything and everything might kill him (it can!). His trusty gazetteer describes his new workplace as terror australis and he's inclined to agree!

All up this is...
  • 31 x infantry 28mm miniatures =155 points
  • Library (Fantasy) = 20 points
  • Library (Lady Sarah's Library Cart) = 20 points
  • Library (Famous Person) = 20 points
  • Library (Romance) = 20 points
  • Library (Local History) = 20 points
Total 255 points.

Not sure what's next. I need a break from individual character-type figures ;-P

Album: Elsiane

Artist: Hooverphonic

Bless you Millsy, for keeping things unusual - and for a top-of-the-line music selection! I love Elsiane, and I had no idea to even search for Hooverphonic with an orchestra. I'm all over that.

So, your submission - awesome painting as always, and as usual, a cool "hook" in terms of a project.

UPDATE - apologies to Millsy, I had not counted things here properly, and he was short some points - this lovely work rings in at 255 points! Well done Millsy, and thanks for your patience!
