From HarryV: 28mm WAR ELEPHANTS and commanders (295 Pts)

For my final submission we have the massed war elephants of Carthage!

Lighting was terrible when I took these pictures, so it was hard to really get good shots. Mounted commanders are from aventine miniatures, foot command from victrix hoplites

The elephants are from Victrix and aventine, with the crews from both manufacturers mixed together to try and blend them together and make a cohesive looking elephant brigade.

I guess when I originally ordered these from aventine I forgot to order the Howdahs, so I did end up having to fabricate my own! I used the victrix Howdas as a pattern and constructed them out of a very heavy cardboard.

I had previously painted two war elephants which I rebased and touched up to match this new set, this what the force will look like for gaming. Three units of three elephants strong. I painted the new elephants fairly generically on purpose, with the idea that they could be used for Carthaginians or Ptolemaic elephants.

Thanks so much for putting on the challenge, and those so much to Peter for managing the Tuesday crew. I had great fun participating this year for my first time!
Best, Harry

Sylvain: What an awesome post to finish the Challenge! You did it BIG! The elephants gear is fabulous and their crew are exquisitely painted. I like how you put squished enemies (including a horse) in the path of the elephants. Bravissimo!

From SteveG: More miscellaneous ancients 28mm scale (143 points)

Been hard at it again this week. Eclectic bunch of ancients for you to check out.

The 1st guy is the only one I don't love.   I did paint him with very cheap acrylic paints as a test and he's a bit more glossy than I'd like . Otherwise those HOMY ARYT paints are quite a good deal.

3D Breed Iberian

"Ballista"  from the historical fiction series by Harry Sidebottom.  A Germanic Auxillary in service of Rome he has various adventures from Mesopotamia to Germania.  This figure is by Aventine.

Turn counter also Aventine.  The dead dude is actually a superb figure. I wish they'd make a " before" version of him too.

Mounted Hunnic archer, another auxillary in later Roman Empire.  I think he was Eureka. Again been with me for many years, unpainted and unloved until now.

Victrix Unarmoured Persian Cavalry

Battlecat Roman Equites

Victrix

Victrix modified from the  Early Saxon Warband kit

Crusader Miniatures

Battlecat  Carthaginian Elephant. 3D printed. 1 of a set of 2.

hopefully I'll complete the 2nd beast before the comp ends.

Very enjoyable. The skin texture is very pronounced so I used makeup spongue to add the brown shades over a black basecoat.  Was dead easy and comes up great.

so  120 points all up I make it.   :)

From Millsy,

Another chocolate box post of beautiful ancients Steve! I never know quite where to start with these as there's always so much variety and interesting stuff going on.

Rather than just list stuff let me talk about two things that jump out - the wonderful horseflesh tones you've created especially the greys, and that simply wonderful elephant with all the beautifully painted decoration. Both are smashing and would grace any table.

I make it 12.5 x 28mm infantry (half points for unbased) including nellie riders, 6 x 28mm cavalry and 1 x 28mm vehicle for a total of 143 points. Top work mate.

Cheers,
Millsy

From RobH - All Things Greek (165 points)

My local club has a focus this year of sharing the Saga Age of Magic night with Saga Ages of Hannibal/Alexander. I have been trying to finish some Greeks I purchased in order to play both these books as well as have another faction for Clash of Spears. Since my first posting for this years challenge I have been work on all things Greek, well almost.

1) First up is a 28mm figure of the Goddess Athena. I am not sure of the source of the figure.

2) The second offering are 12 Companian Cavalry. I had another 24 figures of the same pose based to WRG/DBX standards as part of my Ancient Greeks and that was the same fate that awaited them until I started playing SAGA.

3) I believe that this was the old Aventine Hellenistic/Carthaginian elephant before they made the switch to resin. I finished painting the elephant and howdah early last year when I first received the Greek Warband. However the 4 crewmen have sat around gathering dust. Since I put on the push for the Greeks I went to work on these 4 figures.

4) My final offering this post was a set of ruins I received last year. This is not Greek. Not sure where I ordered them from but they were a filler to help make sense to me for the shipping expense. Hard to quantify the points. Total footprint is roughly 5 inch x 3 inch x 2 inch. One figure include to show scale only.

A set of ruins for Pillage/SAGA.

12 X 25mm Campanian Cavalry @ 10 points each is 120 Points

1 Goddess. Not sure of the points but she towers above the 25mm figures. 7 points

4 x 25mm crewmen @ 5 points each for 20 points.

A set of ruins ??

Total 150?? points

Rob, excellent stuff here. Athena is cool and will be a nice deus ex machina for a magical Saga game. The Companions are quite colourful and should be great on the table. I always liked the idea of war elephants and I love that you've finished the crew.

The ruins look to me like the equivalent of three 28mm figures and I'll allow 15 points for those. Rounding up we get 165 points for your tally.

From MattW: Final Countdown (83 Points)

 Final Countdown

Completing the last bits I can before the challenge ends …. I have surpassed my point goal my quite a lot this year so a very productive challenge for me. A big congratulations to all of those who have entered the challenge and completed your personal goals.

Final building for the challenge for me 28mm building from Tabletop Workshop plastic buildings, I have added plaster then stippled with a toothbrush, sanded flat then to remove the peaks, before painting. This will join my medieval city build this year.

28mm building 10 points

Next up some 20mm Dutch, a Revell plastic wagon and Early War Miniature crewman, a welcome addition to my supply units.

20mm Dutch staff car, a simple repaint of a Diecast car with a SHQ driver and officer.

20mm Belgian staff car, again a repaint of a Diecast vehicle

20mm three vehicles @ 15 = 45 points
20mm 7 figures @ 4 = 28 points

Total points 83

Cheers
Matt

Wonderful work Matt and delighted to hear that you've had a good Challenge! I love how you made that medieval building your own with the addition of the plaster - very nice. I also like all the 20mm WWII kit. It's such a great scale for this period, with so much available in kits and diecast. The Dutch staff is inspired.

Well done, sir!
