From DallasE: Khorne Bloodletters (25 points)

More on the Khornate 40K project... of course there has to be some daemons right?? Well, I'd painted three Bloodletters for an Idols of Torment game a few years ago and had four left in a Plano case. But Khorne's sacred number is 8, so I had to find another one... which I did, on eBay, a couple weeks ago. So the remaining five Bloodletters went under the brush this weekend.

This is the new one, he looks like a Champion of some kind which is good, he's the only example of this sculpt in the group.

The paint recipe for these guys is easy... the skin is Khorne Red, Mephiston Red, Evil Sunz Scarlet just blended upwards. Horns and claws are Cantor Blue highlighted with Thunderhawk?

Eyes and teeth are Wraithbone, I was reading in the old Slaves to Darkness book that Bloodletters have "milky eyes" so I redid the eyes on the first three as well. The weapons were fun to do, they were painted Corax White and washed twice (heavily) with Biel-Tan Green. I think they look pretty cool and of course red and green are complimentary colours so that works.

Can't not post a bare-cheeked rear view of these daemons! ;-)

Counting twenty-five points for five 28mm models here, that will bring me to my goal of 500 points, ta very much. Hopefully I'll be back with another entry later in the week.

Cheers,

Dallas

You did terrific work on these iconic castings, Dallas. Even though the posing is a bit limited, these are still my favourite Bloodletter designs to-date. I like your blue-black horns and nails, and the Biel-Tan Green swords are the chef's kiss. What a great contrasting colour!

Congrats on meeting your 500 point target and I look forward to seeing a final entry later this week.

From Mike W - A mixed bag of Genres & Scales (324 Points)

Just when you thought it was safe to avoid Orcs in my posts, I present a batch of 20 x Orc Bowmen, although many would say no ewal Orc would consider using a bow...

These guys are 3D Prints from Highland Miniatures, via eBay and I although they do not match the look and feel of my existing collection  I just liked the sculpts and wanted to paint them!

Batch of 20 x 28mm Orc Bowmen

Closer view of the right flank of the Orc Bowmen

And the left flank, featuring the banner

In my head, I'll use them as 'civilised' Orcs that have taken to dressing like humans, albeit, some strange Orcish cult (Gorka or Morka or both!) with their deep red cowls and forgoing the traditional choppas and spears for bows.

The command group

Three Bowmen

Three more...

Another three, although I like these guys as a one off, I don't think I'll get any more as they are so different from the others in my collection

Four Bowmen

And the last four!

This really is the end of my Orcs for this year but don't worry I'm sure I'll not be able to resist more eBay bargains in the next few months!

Next I have some 100 x Warlord Games Epic ACW 15mm infantry, painted as the 10th Tennessee 'Sons of Erin' Volunteer Infantry, an Irish unit featured on the cover of an Osprey Men-at-Arms book I have.

The full unit

These were painted in much the same way as the AWI infantry I submitte din a previous post this year, being grey clad rebels these guys were pretty straight forward to do and the use of a watered down black ink wash helped pull th edetail out of the figures.

First of five bases!

Second....

The command base, flags printed out and attached.
Unfortunately the 'Sons of Erin' green harp flag is not really that visible.

Fourth base!

And finally.

THe artillery base and teh mounted commander were painted up - really as they were part of eth figure sprue, they will be deployed somewhere in my Rebet army!

The rest of this week's post is taken with a couple of odds and ends thtat have come off my workbench....

A 28mm Skeletons armed with sword and shield.

This guy is wearing a Bedouin head wrap sourced from a Gripping Beast Arab Infantry set.
His original skull is at his feet!

Another view

Finally a Chaos cultist who has stumbled upon a couple of unfortunate travellers, I can't remember where the figure came from but it was for a long forgotten project.

Chaos Cultist with his victims

His nasty looking weapon

A rear shot

From DallasE: Chaos All-Stars Blood Bowl Team (55 points)

OK! So for the longest time (since like 2011 or so) I have only had one painted Blood Bowl team, and these Chaos All-Stars were sitting primed in a Plano case. But my recent New Year's Resolution (host more games!) and a Chaos Dwarfs Blood Bowl team I received as a Christmas gift prompted me to get off my azz and get these guys painted. Of course I also went out and bought the Blood Bowl Third Season box set :-|

These of course are the old metal Chaos All-Stars. I can't remember the copyright dates on the base tags but they do appear in my 2004-05 comprehensive Citadel Miniatures catalog, I think they are the 1994 version of the team. Here are the Chaos Warriors.

I had thought of using numbers from the decal sheets in the Third Season or Chaos Dwarfs team box, but a look in the decal folder revealed a couple sheets of Team Yankee Soviet decals and they sized out just about right.

There's eight beastmen on the team too, four sculpts with two examples each. Good variety.

These guys got similar decal treatment.

With the purple and yellow team colours I was going for a kind of Minnesota Vikings look.

But I haven't formally named the team yet.

Look at this! I even painted eyes on the Beastmen! The whites are Corax White and a fine-tipped technical pen I have works great for the pupils.

I'm looking forward to getting these guys out on the field this year. Might even pick up another Chaos Warrior (Lord Borak?) or maybe a beastman mutant or metal Minotaur or Troll, although those are getting to be $$$.

Anyway, that's 11 28mm models x5 points each = 55 points.

Great work on these veterans who have spent far too long waiting to be painted (pot calling the kettle black there).  I love the Vikings purple colour combo, but these guys definitely need a name/logo/mascot.  Have they played their first game yet?

 55 points it is

From MattT : Kharn the Barbarian. ( Minis 1, Skulls 127 ) 10 pts

At the end of last year like a lot of people I was admiring the new Space Wolves sculpts from GW. I was firm in my resolve not to buy any as I didn't want to start a new space marine army. That was till I came across the across the lads on The Kieran Show. Their awesome Chaos Wolves army was a lightbulb moment and I succumbed to the lure of Chaos.

In another moment of madness I thought it would be a good idea to mash together Kharn the Betrayer and Ragnar Blackmane. Most of the bottom half and weapons come from Kharn and the top half from Ragnar. I swopped the weapons round as it suited the pose better and had to do some filling round the waist join. The last piece of the puzzle was the head as the Khorne helmet and top knot were both a bit obvious. The mini was finished when I found the He-man/Conan head and Kharn the Barbarian was born. He disappeared into the warp sometime ago where he met a Mr K, Horne. Lovely fellow, very chatty. Now he's back and eager to share the news with all his friends.

Kharn was suffering from some base envy looking at all the other heroes and there heroic bases, so I made a plinth for him. A plinth of Skulls.

Now counting the skulls is a bit like counting the individual stones at the Rollright Stones near where  I live. Nobody ever gets the same number three times in a row. Your welcome to try, just be careful you don't leave the door open to possession.

32mm mini x 1
Skulls x 127

From DaveD . A mound of Skullz on a mound of skullz .. what’s not to like ! I will take your  skull count … it’s not my duels wallah bailiwick thank gawd . However I feel there does need to be recognition of the effort and  creativity  so 10 pts it is .

From Millsy: Battlemasters Upgrades (210 points)

G'day All,

Some time ago I was gifted an incomplete Battlemasters board game. The map and a number of other components are missing but most of the minis are present. I'm slowly basing and painting them with the intent of using them as barbarians for Oathmark amongst other things. This past fortnight I've been working on the Chaos stuff, topped up with some other minis that have been modified to a little less chaotic (mainly adding moar skullz!!!)...

42 x 28mm miniatures = 210 points.

Skullz = 131 (or for the mathematically inclined 0.8136645962732919 Nagash)

Thanks for looking!

Cheers,
Millsy

Marvellous work once again Millsy. Always nice to kick things off with "moar skullz". And I assume that miles is fainting with delight somewhere knowing that a Nagash Ratio has been published!

210 points for you, well done!

From Millsy: Nurgle? Ewwwww!!! (90 points)

All things foul and pestilent
All creatures bloated by rot
All things foetid and maggoty
Papa Nurgle corrupted the lot.

G'day All,

I'd wanted these finished last week but there's so much fiddly detail they've taken much longer. You simply can't rush disgusting it seems. So what do we have here?

Death Guard Space Marine Heroes

I'd already said once before I was done painting Death Guard and then these finally appeared at a price that didn't make my eyes water so what are you going to do? Only Morslug is missing so if you have one and are willing to part with him let me know as we can maybe cut a deal.

Great Unclean Ones

These two were part of a lot from eBay which also included the Daemon Prince below. They were incorrectly listed as metal and turned out to be resin, but the seller was a generous chap and refunded 2/3 of the purchase price given his error so one of these two plus the Daemon Prince effectively ended up being free. They needed a lot of clean up and repair work beyond just stripping the original paint job but I think they came out alright in the end. We might need a new version of the Skullz tally for hideous boils now...

Quite what I will do with two of these I don't know. If someone would like to swap the chap without the horns and tongue thingy for something else let me know.

Chaos Daemon Prince

Is this the worst resin min ever made by GW? Quite possibly! It was full of miscast sections, fitted together really poorly and (no fault of GW) was missing his sword. No suitable replacement was available and I wasn't going to buy one so he got a leftover sword from a Death Guard Terminator. It looks ridiculously small in his ham fist and makes me laugh every time I look at it.

I've decided he annoyed Papa Nurgle enough that having lost his sword he was forced to use a small cheese knife instead. For those interested, the Plaguefather does have his own cheese line called Stilton. Wikipedia says it has a "characteristic smell and taste" which is like saying the ocean is a little damp. I once spent a day in a camper van with a wheel of this stuff whilst bringing it home from a trip for my grandfather and the smell really is no joke.

Points-wise...

  • 6 x 32 (28mm) infantry = 30 points
  • 3 x "giant-sized" critters @ 20 points each = 60 points

Total = 90 points

Anyway, that's all the unpainted Nurgle stuff I had left. Pleased to have cleared the decks on another project with a few odds and sods left to do. Hopefully anyone who looked at this hasn't lost their lunch. Apologies if that's the case!

Cheers,
Millsy

***

Hello Millsy - and hello again to all AHPC participants. My thanks to Millsy and the other Minions for their efforts stepping in to cover my duties for the past couple of weeks while I had to focus on moving to our new house. The move is now out of the way! The packing, not so much...but the worst part is done, at least...so I can devote some time to the Challenge again!

And what a project to return to! Nurgle figures make me laugh, as they inspire quite the fan following, which GW nourishes by issuing a pretty steady stream of new figures and characters through every generation of figures. The Nurgle figures always attract the talents and efforts of excellent brush folks - just like Millsy here...sigh...Nurgle is like the Bon Jovi of the Chaos gods...but I digress...

You have done great work here Millsy, catching every detail with your brush. Nurgle figures are notorious for offering all sorts of small details, and you have honoured the sculptors' work with your brushes! The magical effects, the terrifying symbol, the censor...all well done, and that is before we come to the slumbering monster daemons!

That's 90 points for you! Congrats on getting another project done and dusted...and perhaps a Challenger can help you track down that missing Morslug?
