From Mike W: More 28mm Skaven Plague Monks (55 Points)

As mentioned on Monday here is my follow-up post showing the balance of the GW Plague Monk Unit that I was working on, trying to get it finished by the Challenge Deadline...

The completed batch of 10 x GW Plague Monks

There are 10 x figures in this batch, half of them being 'regular' Plague Monks whilst the other 5 are a little more exotic - being leaders, musicians & Champions etc!

A view from the left of the line...

Again the recipe I used to paint these has been laid out elsewhere in my posts, I wanted to take more time getting the banners just right for these little guys - trying to balance the look an feel in other units in my collection and reflect the rough and ready 'scrawl' that thes rat men might use to daub their banners....

And a slightly different head on view

The 5 x 'Regular' Plague Monks, showing their right hand side

So I still have a few odds and ends left on my workbench, so we'll see what I'm able to get completed for  final post on Friday night (UK tim) hopefully still within challenge deadlines!

And their left hand side, each is armed with two hand weapons

A close-up on the Plague Monk's unit banner

A close-up on another of their banners

And finally their musician and a couple of guys carrying scrolls and bells!

Sylvain: I really like the palette you used for this bunch of giant rats. They look dirty and unkept. They will make a great addition to your army. I will add 5 points for the big banner. Great job! Bravissimo!

From TeemuL: Warmaster Undead (47 points)

Just collecting some skulls and "Warmaster Undead" squirrel this week...

...and of course adding to Warmaster army some new units, the true meaning of the Challenge.

I have previously painted some units for the army during the past Challenges, but I guess I have already enough for a small game. Let's see if that happens sooner or later. These are the latest additions, one unit of foot infantry, one character and one war machine called Skull Chucka. I bought all the minis I have second hand they were mostly painted. They might have been mostly intact, too, but I'm not sure. Anyway, Skull Chucka is missing the crew, so I guess it works by magic now, and character should have another companion, one with a banner, but they are all missing at the moment. I couldn't find them in the box I stored them, but may be I found them from somewhere else.

There are lots of different kinds of bones on the base, and some weapons, too. A good supply, if you need to raise some bodyguards?

I chose green as the main colour (after bone), which is used in the shields. Cloaks are purple and shafts are red. That's pretty much it! I used Contrast paints except for the metal parts, which are traditional acrylics. Quite fast to paint once you have all the colours defined. I painted all the other characters last year, but left this one for the Challenge, because of the mountain of skulls. I gently highlighted all the skulls on the mountain with bone colour, trying to keep count of skulls, but most likely the final count is incorrect. Shields and weapons bring some interest to the bone mountain. Skull Chucka was very quick to paint, so the 3 points awarded for a crew served weapon is quite right, even though it is a big one.

There are 45 skulls between shoulders visible enough to count on the rank and file units and on the character. Then 42 freehand skulls on the shields and banners and 1 sculpted. 8 skulls on the catapult and 1 more in the banner pole. I counted 30 skulls on the base of the character, most likely incorrect to some way or another. Total amount 127 skulls. I just noticed that my close rival in the Skull race, BruceR, also painted some 10mm Warmaster skeletons. Great minds think a like!

3 points for the crew served weapon and 44 points for the infantry (there are 43 full "bodies" and 3 crawling up from the ground), total 47 points from the Undead.

List of squirrels (15):
28mm Napoleonic British

What a great army Teemu, you have really re-created that awesome old-school look with the green bases as well! And what a great score on the Squirreling Duel mate.

Well done, Sander

Barks - Rusty Terrain Entry (25 Points)

Some rusty skully scenery to dress my tabletop. I do like these arcane tech pieces; it is a struggle not to really go to town on them. I also painted up a fistful of crates and barrels- these were quick wash and drybrush jobs.

Did you know you can fit 125 skullz on this?

My marble statue technique is white; washed pale grey; thin sepia to cracks; then thinned grey veins.

Skullz: +147 (total 192)

-----------

What a great and weird tech terrain piece (and knowing GW 5x the price of what it should be!) and wow that should really help out your skull count.  I like the dirty rusty paint job, but wonder if maybe you should wash the skulls and mechanicus symbol to blend in more with the dirty nature of the rest of it?  Shame to wreck the clean painting, but I think it might be more cohesive all dirty.  Just my take though, which counts for nothing :-). I do really like the marble effect on the statue though.

As for points, the tech piece looks like it is pretty sizable piece with a lot of detail to work on, so I am going to score it at 15 points (about the same points as a normal sized building).  As for the crates while simple, there is enough detail on there the count them as a small building so I am going to go with 10 points.

From Mike W - A mixed bag of Genres & Scales (324 Points)

Just when you thought it was safe to avoid Orcs in my posts, I present a batch of 20 x Orc Bowmen, although many would say no ewal Orc would consider using a bow...

These guys are 3D Prints from Highland Miniatures, via eBay and I although they do not match the look and feel of my existing collection  I just liked the sculpts and wanted to paint them!

Batch of 20 x 28mm Orc Bowmen

Closer view of the right flank of the Orc Bowmen

And the left flank, featuring the banner

In my head, I'll use them as 'civilised' Orcs that have taken to dressing like humans, albeit, some strange Orcish cult (Gorka or Morka or both!) with their deep red cowls and forgoing the traditional choppas and spears for bows.

The command group

Three Bowmen

Three more...

Another three, although I like these guys as a one off, I don't think I'll get any more as they are so different from the others in my collection

Four Bowmen

And the last four!

This really is the end of my Orcs for this year but don't worry I'm sure I'll not be able to resist more eBay bargains in the next few months!

Next I have some 100 x Warlord Games Epic ACW 15mm infantry, painted as the 10th Tennessee 'Sons of Erin' Volunteer Infantry, an Irish unit featured on the cover of an Osprey Men-at-Arms book I have.

The full unit

These were painted in much the same way as the AWI infantry I submitte din a previous post this year, being grey clad rebels these guys were pretty straight forward to do and the use of a watered down black ink wash helped pull th edetail out of the figures.

First of five bases!

Second....

The command base, flags printed out and attached.
Unfortunately the 'Sons of Erin' green harp flag is not really that visible.

Fourth base!

And finally.

THe artillery base and teh mounted commander were painted up - really as they were part of eth figure sprue, they will be deployed somewhere in my Rebet army!

The rest of this week's post is taken with a couple of odds and ends thtat have come off my workbench....

A 28mm Skeletons armed with sword and shield.

This guy is wearing a Bedouin head wrap sourced from a Gripping Beast Arab Infantry set.
His original skull is at his feet!

Another view

Finally a Chaos cultist who has stumbled upon a couple of unfortunate travellers, I can't remember where the figure came from but it was for a long forgotten project.

Chaos Cultist with his victims

His nasty looking weapon

A rear shot

From Barks: More Underhive denizens (30 points)

My painting time has really stalled out this Challenge, but I forced myself to get some figures done. These are a variety of beings you may find in the Underhive.

The malstrain is a corrupted genestealer. I slightly trimmed back and toned down the excess spikes of the original sculpt, as I thought they were a bit much even for me. I've got more of these to paint but its a slow fiddly process. He's a big boy on a 40mm base. I've gone for a severe cataract eye. The pustules remind me of the original plastic 'stealers.

With an untrimmed figure

Next, I have some winged figures- two caryatids and a cherub. Caryatids are nearly mythical figures to underhivers, and are associated with good luck. The smaller metal figure is a very limited sculpt associated with Colony 87- read more here. He's on a 20mm base, and is definitely a 'he'.

This cherub had a goatee and hair
but I trimmed it back to be more Churchillian.

Somewhere in this medic servoskull is a skull!

I really like this underseer sculpt. It nails the bizarre bodies and mechadendrites of the tech-priests.

Postscript: I was bullied/peer-pressured into painting some patches onto flight suits and trying to get a mirrorshades effect onto Ferro's aviators. Are you happy now?

Six figures of varying sizes... 25 points?
+1 skull for the skull challenge (total 45)

From Millsy:

Any submission that makes use of the term "denizen" is a winner in my books! These are all superb mate but I am particularly impressed and at the same time a bit disturbed by the underseer. I have little idea what mechadendrites are but I suspect I'm better off that way.

Kudos for your efforts on the mirrrorshades and patches. I've awarded a bonus five points because I resist every temptation to revisit something so if you can be bothered it should pay off.

Cracking stuff Barks. 30 more underhive credits for you.

Cheers,
Millsy
