From ByronM - Challenge 15 sign off post

Well, I made it to the end of yet another Painting Challenge, even if I didn't meet my target points.  This year was a lot of fun, and I finally felt good about my painting again now that I got some better glasses and light in my paint area, so that is a win.  Also, I could have hit my points goal, but made the concious choice to go work on some other projects that I really needed to for my company (NorthernLightsTerrain.com), which I will show off later in the post.

First up, the obligatory group shot of myself and all the models I painted, and even though I missed my goal by a little, I am really happy with how much I got done and the quality of most of it.

Next up is a shot of my still in disaster mode painting table...  I still have a ton of odds and ends kicking around that I never got to.

I also realized I never got back to post a group shot of all of my Burrows & Badgers stuff (which I did not get everything done, so there will be a lot more next challenge).  I love how these came out, as the sculpts are awesome with lots of detail, but not too much that you are left painting little bits forever.

And lastly, for the last few weeks of the challenge, I got sidetracked on getting a set of trenches and bunkers ready for sale on NorthernLightsTerrain.com for use with Trench Crusade, which we have been playing a lot of around here.  While I know you can make trenches easily out of foam and stir sticks, foam tends to break down over time, and is harder to pack as it is always the one size.  So, learning from my stacking basic Infinity buildings I made a bunch of stacking boxes with wood texture sides and flat tops that pack up easily for storage.  I sell them like that, but recommend people use whatever modelling compound they want for the tops to give more character, plus glue some random bits and bobs all over and it looks pretty sweet.

Textured and base painted trenches

20 Trench boxes stacked for storage

Unpainted and no top texture added

I also did two style of bunkers to go with them, which gives a complete set for Trench Crusade or any other WW1 style setting.  Are they perfect, no, as it's hard to create angled sections with MDF and a laser, but they work pretty well!

Well, that's it for this year!

Thanks again to Curt and all the Minions for all the hard work, see you all again next year!

ByronM - Warhammer 40k Armigers and Trench Crusade [110 points]

Today I have a fully 3d printed submission for your enjoyment, all happening in Grim Dark Universes.

First up we have my first group of Warhammer 40k Armigers, in for form of a cadre of 3 Armiger Helverins. I have wanted to do a new Warhammer army for a long time, specifically an Imperial Knight army as they have such a low model count, however the models are all the typical insane GW pricing.  However, I recently found some great 3d files for Armigers, so I could print my own rather than dealing the GW.  So, Away we go!!!  Expect more to follow.

I could not decide on a colour scheme for these, but found some colours a while ago from Scale75 that I fell in love with the shades and bought them with no real idea what I would ever use them for.  I randomly saw them when trying to figure out colours for these and decided now is the time, so from darkest to lightest I used Scale75 Anthracite Gray, Abyssal Blue, Caspian Blue (the main colour showing) and Bearing Blue.  All were airbrushed on after painting the chassis and seran(cling) wrapping the chassis to protect the paint job while allowing me to airbrush the carapace.

Once painted, I really wasn't sure what to do to base them, and then again stumbled across a set of wrecked concrete foundation pillars from Epic Basing and thought they would look good on the bases so printed up a bunch of them and away I went.  I think they add a bunch to the base and are something different.

Next up is the first part of a new project from a new game, Trench Crusade.  The art and lore of the game is brilliant and very Grim Dark (go figure since a lot of the crew is made up of ex-GW employees), but I am not really sure about the rules, seems a bit too simplistic.  However, a bunch of friends want to play, and since I subject them to random weirdness that may not be their cup-o-tea but they humour me, I figured I should humour them as well.  If anyone wants to checkout the rules, they are available here for free: Trench Crusade.

This post has the first 2 models that I 3D printed and started painting, only to find out that I am not likely to actually use them in my list, but oh well, they look cool!  I selected the Iron Sultanate as I felt like doing some Persian models and these are all based on Persian lore with the Jannisaries coming in a later entry.  These two though are the Assassin and the Bronze Bull.

The Bronze Bull is absolutely massive being based on a 50mm round and standing over 100mm tall and 150mm wide.  Being such a big chunky boy I am counting the Bronze Bull as my Gluttony model because at this size I am sure he eats a literal ton!

Since the world of Trench Crusade is an extremely grim dark war torn setting, I wanted to keep with a very dark look as well.  So the whole force is going to be painted in mainly bronzes and reds that are muted / muddied down for lower contrasts.

Here is an image to show just how big all of these models are, as the marine is a standard 40k marine on a 25mm base, the bull on a 50mm and the Armiger on a 100mm base.

Points for this post should be something like the following, but am unsure as most of these are much bigger than normal entries of the classification:
- 3x Armigers @ 28mm scale vehicle @ 20 points each = 60 points
- Bronze Bull @ 32mm scale vehicle (?) @ 20 points each
- Gluttony bonus @ 20 points
- Assassin @ 5 points
Total: 105

---------

Your Armiger trio look great in those pastel blues Byron - very neat indeed, and crisply printed too.
But the Brass Bull is my favourite here! Wonderful to see a mythological favourite steampunked up and unleashed on the minions of Hell! I'll score his as a 40mm vehicle given his tanky look

I'm sure we will be seeing more of Trench Crusade as the Challenge continues - at last count with late pledges, I understand that KS netted over $4million!!!

From QuinnM: 4 Layers of Hell (150 points)

For this week I have 4 models for 4 different games(WH40K, AOS, TOW, Warcry) for 4 different layers of hell(lust, gluttony,Greed, Wrath)

I am not a fan of only panting the same model over and over again so the challenge really appeals to me so i spent this week working thru some layers of hell and will be back to a unit of elves next week as my ultimate goal is to get all of them done by the end of the challenge.

First up we have lust and we have a big one. a 3d printed proxy for a knight tyrant. by Ghamhk . Even though I only started painting this year, I have loved the setting of 40K since i was a kid, follow that up with a love of robots, big guns and excessive violence. all that led to my favorite 40K faction being genestealer cults (lore wise not to play). My second is chaos knights so when i found this model i knew i needed to do a whole list in Khorne colors. I didn't intend to paint up this knight till all my chaos wardogs were done but I pushed it forward for this challenge.

It was an interesting challenge to paint as this is by far the biggest model I have painted. Despite it having relatively simple geometry there was no good spot to hold it, and the shoulder pads took the longest to paint as the spikes got in the way. I have been told it is too clean for chaos but am happy with it, so if there are any suggestions other than more rust and more grim let me know.

Next we have a troll for gluttony . His name is Frank and he is feeling sick today as he ate a few too many fish and elves. I painted this up in a more standard paint scheme for a river troll. This is the first time I have shaded this much flesh (only ever faces and hands) even if it is green. The rest of the unit may be hard to paint as I had to mix all the flesh shades from my 1 dark green and the scales for the same dark green and some blues but may make for some subtle variations. as i only have so many paints

We have greed for this one, and it was fun to paint. This is a free guild cavalry from AOS(cities of Sigmar). I like to treat them as Bretonnian knights and am painting each one in different heraldry. I am taking inspiration from my favorite books and shows for the whole unit. Introducing Sir Dlimount of the throne bearers of Calanfer. a whole order of knights decorated in gold and purple to demonstrate the wealth of the kingdom From the book “The wandering Inn”

And lastly we have a Ogre form warcry as my entry for Wrath. This was my angriest model and painted it up to work on flesh tones. I don't have much to say. I am happy with the paint job but i feel it is missing something. There are 2 skulls on the base.

1x 28mm on horse @ 10pts =10 points

2x 54mm footman @ 10pts = 20 points

2x 28mm vehicle @ 20pts = 40 points  (for one knight)

Lust = 20 points (for the Chaos Knight)

Gluttony = 20 points (for the troll)

Greed = 20 points (for the Bretonnian Knight)

Wrath = 20 points (for the Ogre)

Total = 150 points

2 skulls

Sylvain: You offer us a BIG post this week. The Bretonnian knight is colorful and the metal of its armor is perfectly done. The troll shows that you are a master of shading. The ogre is crisp despite a limited palette from ivory to light brown. Finally, the Chaos Knight dwarfs all the other models in size and details. Because of the point system, I have to consider it a 28mm vehicle for 20 points, but because of its humongous size, as demonstrated in the first picture, I will count it as equivalent to 2 vehicles. So, a total of 150 points for you. Well done!
