From RafaelO: More Napoleonic French and some Warmaster bonus (193 points)

Hello everyone!

Two more weeks of hobby progress and some fresh units added to my army. Last week I managed to paint quite a lot, but… I completely forgot to write the post. Yes, yes, I know — I deserve some kind of punishment for that 😅. This week, however, I not only finished a few more units but also remembered to actually write the post! Hurrah!

Let’s start with some heavy cavalry. First up is part of my French Cuirassier Cavalry for the Heavy Cavalry Division. I painted eight figures, mounted on four bases, so I can field them as one or two units depending on the ruleset.

Next, we have some Polish Lancers of the Imperial Guard for my Imperial Guard Cavalry Division. Same story here: eight models on four bases and a commander, ready for flexible deployment on the tabletop.

Now it’s time for the infantry. This week I managed to complete four bases of Fusiliers-Grenadiers from the Middle Imperial Guard.

And finally… something a bit different. I wrapped things up by finishing a Warmaster unit: a unit of Terradons for my army.

In summary

3 x 10 mm Mounted figure @ 3 points = 9 points.

17 x 20mm Mounted model @ 8 points = 136 points.

12 x 20mm Infantry model @ 4 points = 48 points.

Total 193 points.

More updates next week — hopefully without forgetting the blog post next time!

Rafa

Oh man Rafa, now I do not know which figures to like best they are all sooooo well painted! I have always had a soft spot for the Zvezda French Cavalry and have plenty of both the lancers and Cuirassiers to paint still, but your level of quality is omething different all together. That said I do think those bright oranges you chose for the Terradons really win me over for those as pick of the litter awesome entry indeed!

From RafaelO: Warmaster Lizardmen. The rise of a new Army - [75 points]

Greetings again from Spain. I couldn't post anything last week because we're currently in the middle of university exams here in Spain, and I've been grading more than I'd like.

First of all, I'd like to thank everyone who voted for my entry in the Bonus Theme Empire. Congratulations to the other participants, because all the entries were excellent.

This year I had planned to paint mainly French units for my Napoleonic army, but... my brother changed those plans, at least partially. He recently bought a Warmaster Dwarf army, and since I still had my Lizardmen armies in their bags... I had no choice but to start working on them.

So far, I've managed to paint, in the last two weeks (I couldn't post last week), a unit of Saurus, a unit of Skinks, and a unit of Kroxigors.

First, I'll show you the big ones: the Kroxigors.

The second unit I painted was the Saurus.

The third was the Skinks, for which I changed the metallic tones to make them even more distinctive.

Finally, I've managed to paint a colonel on horseback for my old guard.

As always, I followed my preferred painting style: White Primer, Xpress paint, Contrast, metallics, washes, and then highlights.

In summary

9 x 10 mm Infantry models Kroxigors @1 points = 9 points.

30 x 10mm Infantry model Saurus @1 points = 30 points.

24 x 10mm Infantry model Skinks @1 points = 24 points.

1 x 20mm Mounted model @8 points = 8 points.

Total 71 points.

I've rated the Kroxigors as 10mm models even though they're actually 15mm in comparison, but the skinks are smaller so...

Cheers Rafa

Why Rafa, you are a fellow teacher as well!? Oh do we know how bad grading is for the available hobby time indeed! I have just finished a large amount of correctionwork myself and am currently onto painting again but nothing so fancy as your stuff shown here! That Old Guard officer is just so incredibly well detailed and crisp and the Lizardmen are very vibrant too. As you correctly pointed out the points on these lizardmen are a bit hard to establish well so I am granting you 4 bonus points in order to get a more rounded out 75 points on these excellent small lizards.

From SanderS: Saxons and Stompy Robots! (330 points)

Hoi,

Last week I missed my posting window because I was busy painting up this lot! We'll start off with some more Big Stompy Robots for the Side Duel okay? As I really love Battletech I have quite a few different factions. One of those is my FedCom Aragon Borderers regiment. The colour scheme for these involves a lot of blue and to make it a bit more interesting I included some white panels.

Next up are some of my 1:72 plastics. These are early Napoleonic Saxons in their spiffing white uniforms. I painted up a brigade as that's pretty much all the Saxon infantry I have to compliment my early war Prussian army.

Points wise this is rather a nice amount for the leaderboard: there's the 8 mechs at 5 points each counting up to 40 points. The 3 regiments of 24 figures each in 20mm/ 1:72 is 288 points unless I am mistaken, which makes the total a whopping 328 points this week. Pretty much the closest I will be getting to a points bomb this Challenge I guess. Off to painting contributions for the circles of Hell now!

Cheers everyone!

Holy smokes, this is quite the bomb, Sander! I always enjoy your Battletech entries as they are so wonderfully clean and colourful. I really like the saturated blue you've used and I think your choice of a few white contrasting armoured panels is spot-on. They look terrific. The same goes for your Napoleonic  Saxons. Very spiffing and tidy work here. I love the early war uniforms with the bicorne - everything is better with a bicorne, I say. The only thing better is a czapska, but I digress.

328 points? Lets round it up to 330 to include the brave banners (and because it rolls off the tongue better).

From GeorgeS: 1:72 Axis And Allies WW2 board game figures (128 pts)

Last post for now (and for the challenge probably)these little guys painted  for  the board game    "Axis&Allies" . The figures have been used are 1:72 scale from Airfix, ESCI, Matchbox and Revell sets.

Here you can see US, UK, Japan, and Russian troops.

There are still two sets to be painted and I will post them in case I have them ready until this Saturday. I'm close to my goal so I do my best to paint them first .

So, 32 figures X 4 points  = 128 points from these sets.

That's all for now.

A BIG THANK YOU! to all the people working for this challenge! You are doing Great job!!

Hope to see you all here next time!

...'till then...

Keep Up The Brushes!!

I'm a boardgame fan, and testify that painted figures make a huge difference to your games. I feel I'm preaching to the choir here. Still, I do encourage wargamers to try their hand at assorted boardgames- you may be pleasantly surprised! Don't skimp on the protective varnish!

From SidneyR: The Laarden Field Deputies, 1688, and the Flemish village of Hoetveld (20 points)

Here's my last contribution to Challenge X, with a small vignette of the "Field Deputies of Laarden".  And, as with a number of my other painting contributions this Challenge, I've created the last of the (self-indulgent, and frankly rather silly) "Characters of Laarden" collectible cards to allow you to complete the set!

In the seventeenth century, "Field Deputies" were Dutch civil representatives appointed to shadow important field commanders on campaign, ensuring - among other things - that that the wishes of the Dutch Stadtholder and the States-General were represented in the councils of war.  In such positions, the Field Deputies could be a potential brake on aggressive action by allied commanders such as the Duke of Marlborough.

And here is the Laarden equivalent - two Field Deputies surveying the battlefield, no doubt concerned by any attempt from the commanders of the Laarden forces to counter-attack or challenge the opposing French army in open battle.  I needed to rush the painting of these figures - they were rather "11th hour" - but I tried to complete them in sombre tones of black, browns and grey.  As would befit, of course, gentlemen of probity, caution and (no doubt) property interests.

As for the figures, both Field Deputies are Old Glory 28mm figures, possibly from their pirate range!  The accompanying grenadier is from Dixon Miniatures.  I swapped the head of one of the Field Deputies for a Bicorne head, making him look "more seventeenth century".   But, fortunately, given the timing, for these modest and conservative figures, no greenstuff, or fancy feathers needed to be added!

I picked up the gabions at Colours, last year.  I think they were pointed out by fellow-Challenger, my good friend Mark "Peaches" Backhouse.  I can't remember where I bought them, but they painted up a treat.  The small drum, with accompanying campaigning map is, I think, from Wargames Foundry - rescued from an ECW command set.

And here's their character card, placed in the center of the "Characters of Laarden" collection for Challenge X.

And that brings to an end my 28mm figures for Challenge X.  The last thing I have to post is a small, fantasy village for my 2mm collection, sold to me some years ago by my good friend Matt Moran.  I've repainted it from Matt's verdant green, summer shades to be a chilly 2mm representation of a Flanders village, located close to Laarden, being the village of Hoetveld.

Painting Hoetveld was a lovely final distraction.  I liked creating the physical impression of cold, adding frosted water and "1mm snow" (basically cotton dust, in snow drifts), representing a different age and a different place to the world of March 2020 - and that is really what our wonderful hobby is all about!

Oh, sorry, I almost forgot.  The points?  Three 28mm figures, at 5 points each adds 15 points to my total.

I wasn't sure about the 2mm village - it seems too small to be worthy of a terrain points value of 20, but may I suggest 5 points?

So, in total, another 20 points to finish the Challenge with.  A huge thank you to Curt, all of the Minions and all my fellow Challengers for being here at the end!

What a fabulous way to end your Challenge - lovely work on the vignette and village Sidney!
