From MikeF - New California Republic Truck and Tank - 2 x 28mm Vehicles - 40 Points

This week I have 2 vehicle for my Fallout inspired Xenos Rampant side project. During the toy story theme round I completed 10 models to represent the Brotherhood of Steel. These vehicles are for their rival, The New California Republic. The NCR are one of the first stable nations to form out of the post-apocalyptic wasteland and occupy a portion of the former state of California The NCR are on the low end of industrialization and field mostly light infantry units. Any vehicles are largely scavenged and refurbished from the ruins of the old world. They're a credible military power however and I wanted to strike the right balance between scavenged, but operational.

First up is a 3d printed model from Watcorp Designs. It's a basic transport vehicle that looks at home in the wasteland.

 Next is another 3d printed model directly copied from Fallout 4. This is from Etsy and appears to be a limited print. The world of fallout portrays the future as it was envisioned by people of the 1950's. This tank captures that retro-future design really well. In terms of its real world functionality, this tank is a complete disaster! Too may tracks, a ridiculous 2 gun turret and a front facing that doesn't appear to be armoured and has a large opening in it that appears to go right into the crew area. I guess you can't be too picky when you procure your vehicles from a scrap heap!

I think those are the fuel tanks right on top of the tank.

Great vehicles Mike.  You say SciFi, but the way things are going, we may have a New California Republic any day now.  I agree that the tank would be a disaster IRL, but it look wonderful.  Very Popular Science magazine from my Junior High School Library.

From MikeF - Tyrant’s Legion Tanks and Turrets - 3 x 28mm Vehicles and 2 small turrets - 68 Points

After completing a few infantry units for the Tyrant's Legion, I decided it was time to add some armoured support. The TL army list has a few interesting options unavailable to normal guard units in 5th edition. These include twin-linked lascannon turrets for the Leman Russ tanks and Thunderer Siege Tanks equipped with a demolisher tank. I sourced the lascannon tanks from Kromlech which are designed specifically with the classic Leman Russ tank for 40k. The thunderer is a conversion using the 30k Leman Russ tank designed for the Solar Auxilia and a kit from Tiny Panzer Studios (through Etsy) which adds the hull mount with gun and top plate to hide the turret ring. It's a very nice 3d printed part that required very minor cutting and sanding to make it fit properly. The conversion kit does NOT fit the classic Leman Russ model however and is designed specifically for the Horus Heresy version.

I also painted up two chimera turrets to swap out the ones for my Steel Legion Imperial Guard. I included a photo of the two chimera's for display purposes only and only the turrets were painted during this challenge. I went with 4 points for each turret, but I'll accept Peter's final judgement on what he feels the turrets are worth. 

The vehicles use the same grey formula, but they're a little busier with decals and markings than the Tyrant's Legion. I may pick up some new transports in the future, but they should work for now.

That's 3 x 28mm vehicles for 60 points and 2 x 28mm vehicle turrets for (maybe) 8 points = 68 points total.

I think I'll take a break from the Tyrant's Legion for now.

From BruceR: Leopold's Leopard Company (10mm x 108 and 2 cats + 5 = 115 pts)

I've returned to the paint desk after 7 days gone over Xmas and 4 over New Years.  Oh, the trials of retirement.  Holidays were great and I hope all are well in the AHPC.  After Percy, Melvin, and Mad Mick as single entries I sat down to some actual work.

Gratuitous Holiday post:  Me and some friends doing a crab etc... boil and drinking on New Years Day in Minnesota with temps at -4 F.

In my Warmaster journey I have turned to Etsy (don't 3d print) for models and oh the options.  I'm adding some bits to an orc force and decided my Later Byzantines can be used for empire and with additions Dogs of War.  So, I broke out my first battalion of little fellas.  I do have a few DOW 28mm but never tried to create an army when I was playing WHFB.  

The first force is one I always was drawn to: Leopold's Leopard Company.  The Leopard skins just too cool.  From Little Wars TV I discovered the guys use a printer who actually removes supports (What?) so I ordered a few bitz and I'm hooked.  Filament Resin Hunter is the Etsy store, the creator is Varus Miniatures and I've had great luck with this store.  

In preparing I decided the white pike tassels and black shafts would have to be replaced with red and a lighter color for the shaft.  With this in mind I did a test run using my wee method of painting small things "blob painting".  Black undercoat and simply hitting spots with the chosen colors.  2' rule for 10mm.  

My test strip and it is full steam ahead.

Even at this scale I paint the same, inside out.  So, flesh, armor, Leopard head, and then the other odd bits.  Most infantry in Warmaster are set along the long edge of the base, with pikes the rules require the unit to be set along the short edge of the base like cavalry.  Under the game system pikes treat cavalry charges as if they are in protected terrain.  Downside is you have trouble in terrain such as woods.  Duh, I guess carrying a 12 ft pike among the trees is a little tough.  The models are set with some pikes at 45 degrees and the rest as support.  The command stands are the flag carriers.

I did these in two batches.  With 28mm I tend to paint 8-10 figures at a time.  I don't army paint.  This worked okay, though my brain likes to see things done so I might go back to smaller batches and do a unit at a time.

For the flags I used some ancient GW decals again, these from an empire sheet.  I'm amazed they still work.  I had a red, blue and yellow lion head and thought close enough.  The blue and red look good, the yellow could use some outlining.  I simply painted the red stripes over the white base and highlighted.   Another fun add is two of the command stands have leopards in the rank.  ( I admit I did not paint spots)

I'm very happy with how the units turned out.  A little concerned as I did snap three pikes while simply moving models around so could be a problem on the table.  Able to glue them back, but my Magister Militum metal model pikes just bend.  Oh, well I imagine pikes are lost or broken in battle in the real fantasy world.

Sylvain: Bruce, Saskatchewan is not that far from Minnesota, maybe you could send some crab our way... I'm glad you went back to the painting station because the result is just astonishing. Even though the figurines are part of large unique, their individual features can be easily distinguished. It's a great demonstration of your talent. I will add 5 points for the flags and increase your total to 115. Joli travail!

 

 

From PaulSS: Gaslands "La Troca" and a load of tires -- 25pts

 

More Gaslands madness this week with more additins to the Gaslands collection, you probably only need at most four or five vehicles to play thsigame, but sourcing Hot Wheels cars and then kitting them out for combat is great fun.

Victoria bought me this Hot Wheels 1950 Chevrolet 3100 lowrider "La Troca" and I wanted to do a rather simple build on this. It was kitted out with exhaust, hub spinners and hood exhaust pipes and then a massive secondary exhaust all sourced from Etsy 3D prints. I wanted it dirty off-white, so the main colour is Contrast Skeleton Horde.

Another Etsy buy was a set of ten sections of 3D printed tires/tyres, three in the form of piles, six as tire walls and the last a flaming tire fire.

One 20mm vehicle and I think 1pt each is good for the tire sections will add another 25 pts to the ongoing total.

From PaulSS: A trio of Gaslands Carnage -- 50pts

 

The mojo was low this week, with todays deadline looming all I had added was a shipping container and made a start on the base-coat of a '32 Ford for the Gaslands collection.

Waking up yesterday morning with a head cold did little to boost my enthusiasm, but powered by hot lemon drinks I finished the Ford and then painted a Volkswagen, before, in true Gaslands style "Pushing It" and getting the Bel-Air finished before bedtime.

'32 Ford

A few weeks ago I had been visiting my daughter and her boyfriend who is also into Gaslands and he showed me some 3D prints he had picked up from Etsy. After an order of my own I was soon sticking bits on of my own.

The '32 Ford, has new wheels and hubcap spikes added as well as a door mounted machine-gun, rooftop lighting array and exhaust baffles added, the windscreen cover is made from car body repair mesh.

I painted this in mainly army surplus, US Dark Green, but with a door panels and trunk in white, what does "15137" mean? Who knows!

Baja Bug

The Hot Wheels VW "Baja Bug" really comes out of the packaging ready to play, but I still added new wheels, extended exhaust with spiked baffles and some bolt-on armour to the front.

In this instance the colour is Clear Orange, but with many panels scraped back to rusty steel.

I left the glass in the windows of the Bug, so after finishing the paintwork did those, and the headlamps and roof mounted lighting array in a non-glassy glass technique.

Bel-Air

The final car is a Bel-Air, this one was quite the build, I cut the roof off with my Dremmel and added armoured plates from Wills corrugated iron sheeting, strapped in place with some jewellery chain. The 3D printed parts added a ram at the front, new wheels, air intake, machine-gun and rack of supplies on the back. The windscreen was replaced with car body repair mesh.

I had a go at painting this one with contrast paints and the main colour of the car is Leviadon Blue, although by the time I had done dirtying it up you would hardly tell. 

As I made this a cabriolet, I will need to add a driver at some future point.

The last item is a rusty shipping container I made a start on a few weeks ago when I had over-done it with the US Dark Green when painting the US armour.

We have a 60-can game on Thursday so will use these three to make up my team for the evening.

Three 20mm vehicles and a 5 point claim for the container will add 50 points to my total.

A fine trio of Gaslands wrecks Paul.  I love all the extra details that you put on these vehicles and the battered and chipped paintwork.  The conversion work on the Bel Air is particularly fine.  Good luck dealing with the head cold and hopefully you are fully back up to speed next week.  Oh and give 'em hell on the track this week.

(From BruceR) Nappys - Western Studio - Boats (80 pts)

Next up I grabbed some French Lights and I wanted Colpacks. Why you say, because the rule of cool is important. I was able to find some Front Rank French at Noble Knight games saving some on shipping. Last year I cranked out a few FIW Front Ranks and I really enjoy the slightly bulky figures.  I’m not a rivet counter and of course when you start researching Napoleonic uniforms you tend to find a number of differing renditions of uniforms.  I freely admit I paint faster and better with a guide, so I went to Painting War as my base.  

When researching you can read where the shako replaced the Colpack and yet elan driven units kept them.  My little elite group of French for my go to game of Sharp Practice have a mix of shako and Colpack.   Maybe some Bearskins later.

Gotta love a fur hat with a big snaky plum.  

These 9 fire and load lights will give my grasshoppers some challenges.  (9x5 = 45)

On to the next studio.  Up the road is the Westerns Studio and, who better than Marshal Grin Duster.  This is another great Pulp Miniatures figure put out for Movember.  I painted a few last year and saw this bloke sitting on my shelf and said why not.  

Gotta love the Stache and take care of your health with a miniature reminder.

To round out the week some wooden assault boats.  Well, they are resin/wooden, and will be used to move troops to shore.   Etsy purchased.   Used the airbrush with wood effects again and added some dry brush.  

The boast are great as they can hold sufficient troops, to at a minimum, portray the unit they are carrying.  

For points I tried the 6" terrain block.  5 pts per boat is my calculation and as always, the Minion Miles can giveth or taketh away as he sees fit.

Points Total:

10 28mm x 5             = 50

Western Studio          = 20

Boats                          = 10

Total                            = 80 pts

Thanks for looking and have a great rest of the week.  Just to share CSM Loki and are scooting out of work  early tomorrow and heading to my sons ranch (my zen place) for the rest of the week.  Not much painting will get accomplished.  Just feeding 350+ head and with 4 dogs and no people.  Heaven!

Minion Miles: I have the same book on painting Naps but mine never come out nearly as nice as yours - perhaps my book is defective?  The Marshall is superb and we can all use more boats on our table top - a very nice and varied submission.
