Slave of the Pharaoh

Let's quickly detour back to the House of Mystery for a macabre Mummy Monday rampagin' murderama, via the November 1980 issue of HoM #286. It's 5 packed pages of creepy crumblin' chaos, plus a joltin' Cain quickie-- not to mention a really great cover from 'ol King Kubert too!

Picture of Evil

And now for something completely different! Yes, it's time to adjust those peepers of yours for a 3-D horror story-- but with the annoying 3-D effect removed! Heck, we lost the goggles for this issue anyway, so whatevz! From St. John's House of Terror #1 (October 1953, debut one-shot), this is some seriously excellent examples of joltin' Joe Kubert's awesome artwork (cover and story), plus inks by Les Zakarin. And FYI: I posted a colorized / updated variation of Kubert's cursed ghost story from this issue way back --over 15 years ago-- in December of 2008 HERE! --just for those of you who haven't been hangin' around here like a picture of evil for very long!

Death's Pool

Picking up where we left off last month with another wild Joe Kubert horror classic, and this one from the December 1952 issue of Strange Terrors #5. More top notch illustrative work, and correct me if I'm wrong, but in all the years I've been producing this blog, this may be the first post featuring a monstrous minotaur! Meanwhile, this is probably the 700th post featuring a pencil mustache. Cute girl art too though!

Cat's Death

Another lengthy horror actioneer from the March 1953 issue of Strange Terrors #7 (see previous post), and this time joltin' Joe Kubert is on hand to lead you through the perilous jungle, showing you all just exactly why he has a goddamn art school. Dynamic visual work as always, and though the evil, great white hunter story typically contains the usual assortment of deadly deja vus, there are still a few weird and worthy surprises along the way.

Picture of Evil

Time for one last date with the Devil, and once again we're heading to the mysterious 'ol disappearing shop that nobody has ever seen before (nor will ever see again), and we have some really super art by Joe Kubert from the October 1953 one-shot issue of House of Terror #1 3D as well. Annnnd now you know why the scans look so odd, and yes, you're not drunk. I attempted to tweak these a bit, eliminating the 3D process as much as possible so it's easier to read on a computer or phone screen (first page, awesome splash, but not so successfully tweaked-- the rest of the story should be pretty good though!)

Change Partners and Die With Me!

"No one wants to be alone on New Years Eve..." and so begins this eerie tale by Joe Kubert (School of Cartoon Art) from Scholastic Magazine's WEIRD WORLDS #4 from 1980-- a tale that feels a lot like a leftover precode classic if you ask me. Weird Worlds was sort of like Dynamite Magazine in that the content was aimed more at kids, but unlike that series, WW contained articles of a darker, sometimes more science fictiony nature. This issue for example features all kinds of fun junk about zombie movies, UFOs, short fiction stories from John Collier and Henry Slesar, hilarious epitaphs and horror jokes, assorted weird 'n true facts, movie previews (Saturn 3 in this ish) and even lends an ear to "weird" music like Alice Cooper, Devo, and Iggy Pop. I believe WW only lasted 8 issues and fyi: one or two of the other issues I have contain scary comic stories by Steven Bissette.

Anyway, HAPPY NEW YEARS, everyone!

Joe Kubert (1926–2012) / Map of Doom

Celebrating a life of amazing, masterful artistry, (read more HERE) today we have an encore presentation of my favorite Joe Kubert precode horror tale-- originally posted here at THOIA back in Nov. 2007, from the Oct. '53 issue of Weird Horrors #9.
