Clinging Corpse

Time to ring in the new month with a clingy classic about a corpse that just can't stop hangin' around! This is a real nice quickie crime corker filler from Mort Meskin, and can be found in the back-up pages of the Feb - March 1954 issue of Frankenstein #29. Lots more on the way too as THOIA is about to enter its 19th year of ominous existence on the 'ol weird wide web! Can ya believe it?!! NINETEEN! And yeah, I'm counting that one busted year when Blogger went bonkers. But unholy cows, we're still alive 'n still clingin' around yer necks somehow-- I'm just as surprised as you, TBH! 

The She-Monster

Who amongst you actually believed I would finish out June with a scary She-Beast? Ohhh, how little you know me... why, clearly the only way to truly seal the coffin lid on a month, (as well as a "Lurid Ladies" theme) is with a She-Monster! Dynamic Dick Briefer returns to THOIA now, delivering his own vicious version of the eternally flawed Bride of Frankenstein, via the January 1954 issue of Frankenstein #28. It's quite a beautiful work of art, honestly, all of this mad monster science at its most maddening! And THAT, my friends, is the way you close out a month of posts, and a terrifically terrifyin' theme! More jolts in July-- stay tombed!

Three Wishes From Dr. Devil

Horror Hero Monday once again, and this time it's a trio of 'em all coming together into one big Prize (Comics) fight to the finish: Dr. Devil, Bulldog Denny Dunsan, and Dick Briefer's immortally iconic, Frankenstein! This post also fulfills Todd's request for "more Briefer", which always sounds good in my book! This is a mega fun monster mash throw-down though, and a gruesome great glimpse into how Briefer could illustrate. I especially love all of the dynamic drawings of Frankie's big 'ol horrific hands... from the July 1942 issue of Prize Comics #22. Things are sure getting hotter 'round here as we approach Walpurgisnacht, eh!

Spirit World

Time once again to enter deep into the realm of the spooky supernatural. Or wait, let's just kick back and watch it enter into ours, via the April - May 1953 issue of Frankenstein #24. Nice artwork from (possibly) Simon and Kirby penciller / inker, Marvin Stein, who I believe is finally making his THOIA debut.

Frankenstein Meets Boris Karload: Master of Horror

It's been a few years since we encountered Dick Briefer's freakishly funny Frankenstein monster, and what better time to get a chill and a chuckle than on the first day of Fall 2022! Some really nice Karloff caricature work here by 'ol Dick as well. From the Jan - Feb '48 issue of Frankenstein #11.

Death in Reflection

Haven't posted anything around here by the great Dick Briefer in awhile, and digging through the Frankenstein files we find a good 'n spooky back-up tale from the February - March 1954 issue of Frankenstein #29, efficiently written and illustrated as only the dynamic Dick could do 'em! I really love stories like this where an unwitting sap just keeps talking to himself and doing things that are slowly but surely sealing his fate, while we the reader just sit back and watch his awesomely predictable demise coming from a mile away...
