Pawns of the Pit

Apologies as we missed our Werewolf Wednesday slot by one day-- but here it comes a'creepin' now, snarling savagely and with ferocious fangs ripping flesh! This is actually a really fun entry from the great "Ghost Gallery" sector of Jumbo Comics (#161 from July 1952 to be exact), and features wonderful art by legendary EC hero / fan favorite, Jack Kamen. It also includes a couple of very unique lycanthrope moments, lyke-- did you know werewolves can't cross a stream of spilled wine?! Plus, a wild, spiraling transformation panel done in a way I've never seen before as well-- "OOOAAAHHEEEE!"

The Human Headed Beasts!

I was just talking about The Mephisto Waltz with a co-worker the other day, --it's an eerie, early satano 70's, Quinn Martin Production starring Alan Alda, Jacqueline Bisset, and Barbara Perkins. As many of you know, demonic films were pretty hot during this time period thanks to 60's classics like Rosemary's Baby, --with The Exorcist and The Omen loomin' on the doomin' horizon! But the thing that made The Mephisto Waltz so creepy wasn't even the devil stuff-- it was the dog with the human head! Those of you that have seen this film know exactly what I'm talking about. Which leads me to todays unusual THOIA post, via the blonde bombshell adventures of WW2 air hostess, Kay McKay. This is a nicely done back-up entry from the March 1942 issue of Captain Courageous Comics #6 and features some truly freaky-deaky, nightmarish K-9s! So if action adventure horror is your cup of tea, --then today your cups 'n mugs runneth over, chums!

The Death Ray

It's time to WHOOSH! some living things into skeletons somehow, which means it's also time for another half-baked Captain Battle horror adventure bonanza, via the December 1941 issue of Silver Streak Comics #17! This time Cap and his trusty sidekick Hale take on Dr. Dracula (lol) and his dingbat death ray. And if you think you've seen the last of death rays this week-- think again! I've got another one aimed at you up next for March of the Mummies Monday, in fact... yes, we must not forget the monthly themes that I tend to flimsily throw together here at the last minute. WHOOSH!

The Skull Men

I've been trying to get some requests filled going back into the previous year, but unfortunately haven't been too successful (though I was able to finally answer Bill's question in the comments of last month's Rudy Palais post HERE.) Anyway, Brian asked nicely about the Captain Battle vs. Herr Skull story from the Sept. 1941 issue of Silver Streak Comics #14, and that, (like a Cap sock to a nazi jaw) I can absolutely deliver! And here it is --SMACK!!! These boney goons are a real riot though, I mean, it's not enough to wear skull masks, but they've added a German pickelhaube (spike) to the tops of their noggin's, making them look like demented, undead unicorns! This is an action packed, frenetic follow-up to our previous mummy story HERE, and as long as we have the Silver Streaks out, we may as well see a few more later this week too. We'll just make it a Captain Battle vs. the Super Stupidnatural Fest, how's that sound? So grab hold tight to your luceflyer's, --it's gonna be a wild week!

The Mummy Master

I've designated March as "Mummy Madness Month", so every Monday we'll get ourselves wrapped up in some mummified related macabery! And let's march it into action right now with a creepy Captain Battle WW2 classic from the ominous October 1941 issue of Silver Streak Comics #15. Original Daredevil creator / artist, Jack Binder clearly had a blast with this one, --and I'm super duper sure you will too!
