Your Grave is Ready (Again)

The good news is Werewolf Wednesdays are back. The bad news is they're unfortunately a day late. But the additional good news: it's a really hairy scary wolf man tale from the March 1953 issue of The Unseen #9. The additional bad news is you might've already seen this story here if you've been following this blog for at least the last 4 years. But! More good news is that if you did see this story here, it was the black and white reprint version from Eclipse as featured in their short-lived Seduction of the Innocent series (re-open that grave HERE.) The other bad news is-- well... there really isn't any more bad news, because the final bit of good news is this is the original 50's COLOR version and now you can finally start reading the goddamn story already-- good? Good.

Shadows in Pawn / Devil's Stones

The final two pieces of the June 1952 issue of The Unseen #5 puzzle... a puzzling issue of high weirdness I mean, as witnessed in our last post HERE about the hunter, but also the story about the giant man-eating caterpillar in the THOIA Archive HERE; the spectral highwayman horrors from an Alex Toth classic HERE, and finally today's Abe Simon entry about a man without a shadow! (Plus a one page bonus filler tale.) Hope everyone enjoyed another FULL ISSUE presentation!

The Three Monkeys

Someone reminded me a few weeks ago via email that I had yet to upload the last of the stories from the April 1953 issue of Adventures into Darkness #9 --click the GCD link to get the other story titles and then just search the THOIA archive! Kind of surprising too, because it's a pretty good looking tale. (FYI: HAUNTED LOVE  fans note, one story from this issue wound up in issue #1.

When Death Takes a Hand

While I'm working on a larger Halloween themed post, here's a minor supernatural quickie with spooky art by Gene Fawcette, from the August 1954 issue of Out of the Shadows #14. This was the final issue of this interesting horror series, and nearly half the stories in this one received the remake / reprint treatment in the Eerie Pubs a few decades later... our current tale in question eventually finding itself retitled "Deadman's Hands" and appearing in no less than 5 different Eerie issues.

The Legend of Rose Hall

What's the shivery secret behind the tortures, black magic, and murderous legend of Rose Hall's very own evil witch, Annie Palmer? Try not to die of fright as this tale of ultimate terror unfolds to the last screaming, supernatural panel!! From Menace #166.

And when I say Menace #166, I of course meant Dennis the Menace Bonus Magazine Series #166. APRIL FOOLS, ya'll!!!

(FYI: A true THOIA horror tale coming up tomorrow)

Fountain of Fear

It's almost Thanksgiving, and here's a supernatural appetizer (with an Native American twist!) to whet your whistle from the Jan. '54 issue of Out of the Shadows #11. Looks like this one got the Eerie Pub redraw / retitle treatment in the 70's, becoming "Spirits of Doom" for Witches Tales (twice reprinted), original 50's art by George Roussos and later reworked by Walter Casadei. This issue of Out of the Shadows also features one of my favorite Standard Comics covers, (I don't know who's face is more horrific) ...GCD says it could be a Peppe / Sekowsky team-up. Have a great holiday everyone, we'll be back this weekend with more stomach churnin' catastrophe's for you to choke on!

The Unbeliever / Let's Go Mad

Finishing up our full-issue examination of Adventures into Darkness #13 from March 1954... and we come full circle too with another moody, Tothy tale from Sekowsky and Peppe, --man, I love the silhouette work on this one! Hope everyone enjoyed this week of scans, check the last handful of posts for the rest of the issue (which included all of the fun bonus filler pages and even the text story.)

Up next we have a request, and it requires an eerie visit to the Twilight Zone! See ya in a few...

The Monster in the Maze!

Continuing on with the March 1954 issue of Adventures into Darkness #13, "The Monster in the Maze!", illustrated by Gene Fawcette, is ferocious fun, but a little on the short side, so I added the "Escape from Terrorland" maze (which I believe I may have actually posted here at THOIA in the past), as well as the 2-page text story "The Lonely Place" by John Marvin. Yes, it comes to my attention that some of you actually like and read these things... I'm posting it mainly for you full issue completists, and because it does have a couple of spooky cool illustrations to boot! One more story to go, see ya in few! PS: And be sure to see the last post about our multiple Rondo Award nominations this year in case you missed it-- if you dig THE HORRORS OF IT ALL and our HAUNTED HORROR comic book series, then please give us a vote! :)
